Just thought I'd document this a little for information purposes but hope none of you ever have to go through this!!
So yes I had my cerclage on Monday. Went in in the early am, got prepared in the maternity wing, had to drink a disgusting thing for the stomach, then they took me down to the OR. I had to speak to the anesthesiologist who gave me the choice of a spinal regional anesthesia or general, but said it was easier to go with the spinal, but there weren't any risk for the baby with either. I still preferred not to put the baby to sleep, I even declined taking something for the nerves, I only regretted it for like a minute or two 😅
There was maybe just above 30 minutes from the time I got in the OR to the time we left, including the anesthesia and the surgeon getting ready. I thought I wouldn't feel anything from the spinal but I did feel her work down there so that was a bit freaky. Never felt pain though. I would just get a little panicky when the anesthesia team would stop talking to me as I was then a bit more focused on what was happening. Also I had a hard time feeling no control on my bladder.
Then I went back to recovery and waited for the anesthesia to wear off and to pee. That was basically the toughest part, I had a real hard time, but apparently it's normal. I was told I would have pain and luckily I didn't have any 🤞. I had just a little bit of bleeding/spotting which also stopped earlier than I thought it would.
So that's my cerclage story, I'm taking it real easy at the moment but in reality I feel great. They said I could slowly resume my normal activity but I don't really feel mentally ready for that yet. Hoping that all stays good and for a smooth sail to 40 weeks from here!
@ckmb_1250 From what I understood, yes, or at least makes them groggy because the anesthesiologist said that because the baby wouldn't be born that day it would still be ok to do general anesthesia. I think they are born a bit groggy when the mother has a c section with general anesthesia and I'm sure it's a bit more tricky to evaluate them.
When do you / did you have your appointment? Today Nov 13th
How was your appointment? What'd they do? Ok, just the standard intake questions and a lot of prescription papers with blood tests and vitamins and ultrasound requests.
But I got distracted and realized when they left, that he only asked questions and didn't even take out the Doppler to find the heartbeat, which on the phone it said they would. Instead he sent me for a vaginal US which was something my husband wanted to skip because of the cost. And the doctor said one of the reasons was to see if it was a viable pregnancy, which I thought could be done with a Doppler, since I'm already at 12 weeks.
The frustrating part and I don't exactly know how I feel yet, is that he called it high risk. And says now I have to go to a MFM, which is good because it's cheaper, but I want a VBAC and high risk makes me feel like they'll use it as an excuse. I don't think I was high risk in my other pregnancy. But on the other hand I kind of wanted to get familiar with that hospital, but it's so far away and my husband won't let me take the metro during covid, for obvious reasons, which is so close to my house and this hospital.
@littlelibelula that sucks that they didn't stand by what they had said but hopefully it is not a foreshadowing of the whole experience.
When do you / did you have your appointment? Yesterday group genetics counseling and today NT scan
How was your appointment? Both went well overall. Some rant below but thats life these days.
What'd they do? At the group genetics counseling they went over all the screening options they offer with costs and benefits and at the end we had one on ones with the doctor to see which we wanted her to put order in for. I ended saying I would go with Nipt since recommended for all pregnancies now instead of the just the nts I did last time. Fast forward to today when i went in for the actual scan and test baby didnt want to cooperate so barely got the measurement they needed (but did get a cute thumb sucking photo since that's all they were doing) and then the nurse who does the nipt blood test was out for the day so now not getting it till I go in 11/23.
Re: Weekly Appointments 11/09
I have my group video call around genetics on Thursday and 12 week ultrasound on Friday.
Still have yet to meet with an actual doctor in person this pregnancy... so crazy but covid times it is what it is.
