Product Spotlight: Bathtime

Hello all! So I'm shamelessly following the Product Spotlight schedule and prompts I stole from my last BMBs, and after a string of super crucial topics (carseats! cribs! strollers!) we have kind of a peripheral topic this week: BATHTIME!

This is a great time to, you know, SPOTLIGHT some PRODUCTS about bathtime, but it would also be great for STM+ to share your methods, tips, and techniques. There are so many other momentous things to plan for meticulously and you may then find yourself with a squirming 3-day old baby over a sink not entirely sure what to do!

So! Adorable baby towels and teensy washcloths? Soaps and shampoos that won't irritate that silky skin? Baby-holders/mini-baths for the bathtubs? Solutions for shower-only households? And looking ahead to older babies, what toys do you have in the bath with them? But more broadly, technique-oriented, how often do you really bathe a newborn? A 6-month old? A 1-year-old? Where do you do it (bath, separate baby bathtub, shower, sink)? How do you do it without that wriggly little peanut flinging themselves into the water? Do you get in there with them? Please share!

Re: Product Spotlight: Bathtime

  • I've had that first years tub for both boys (we got it for free at our hospital).  I don't love it because it's big and bulky, but it does the job.  It fits over our kitchen sink and drains easily. My friend is giving me the little blooming flower thing that fits in the sink and I think that will be perfect for newborn baby.  Once they get around 3 months, I just lay them in the bathtub, if they're tolerant of it.

  • @mrosek91 - schedule question - would you be ok with switching week 21 (travel accessories) with week 30 (Small space/Apt solutions)?? I'm thinking travel accessories may not be as much of a burning topic at that time (thanks, Covid) and I've noticed a few of us talking about smaller or combined nursery/other room situations. Would love to have some extra planning time during second tri.  <3
  • @ec1212 the small apartments product placement actually got cancelled on my last BMB, because we'd already made the move to FB, and decided that we didn't need it. So you'll see just how horrible I am at coming up with my own prompts. (If you didn't believe me when I said I stole these, go check out August 2019.) But I'm happy to make that change.
  • We had the First Years bath that fits in the sink as well, it actually survived all three of our children! And then, just like my maternity and baby clothes, I gave it away because we weren’t having anymore babies! Lol
I’ll probably just get another one because it’s what I’m comfortable with. We use it in the sink till baby is about 4 months, then use it in the bathtub until baby can sit up. Then on to regular baby in the bathtub.

I do like the baby towels because you can cover their head so easily so t don’t get quite as cold.

Get everything ready ahead of time for bath, and make sure you can reach it all while keeping one hand on baby.

Our babies get a bath every 3 or 4 days (except our first who got one every other day). You don’t want to bathe them too often, it can make their skin dry.

I always lotion baby after bath. And with our first, we just used Johnson and Johnson because we were young, broke, and that is what we got as gifts. But it ended up giving my daughter rashy skin. Then I switched to more natural bath products and I’m so glad I did. If there is one thing that you do natural or organic, I highly recommend bath soap and lotion. You’d be surprised at how bad some of the ingredients are for you in mainstream soaps and lotions. I can recommend Honest Co. products, California Baby is great, and Baby Mantra has become my favorite for newborns.

  • Just popping over to say real quick.. that I bathed about once a week for the first couple months. I’d do wipe downs in between when necessary but you don’t want to bathe too much! My last was really prone to eczema. Totally agree with the natural/organic bath products. I would always moisturize after bath with coconut oil.
  • Same as many of you, we did her first bath at about a week old, then once a week for a long time, upped it to twice a week after a few months, then finally daily baths this past summer when she was almost 2.

For those of you who already have 2+ kids, do you just put the new baby in a little bath seat in the tub with your toddler? Or are they too crazy?
  • For my first we used the angel care bath seat from her first real bath to whenever she outgrew it. Before her stump fell off we just did wipe downs. After her stump fell off we started nightly baths so we could have a routine but we only used soap once or twice a week to start.

We are planning on doing the same this time around and will probably get a second bath seat so we can just do them both at once.
  • @ckmb_1250 yup! But mine are all 5 years apart, so it only works for about a year.

  • To be honest I don't remember too many details. But I live in a hot climate, where sweating is a big issue, so my doctor recommended two baths a day. In the beginning I just did one every couple of days. But I did start to do water baths two to three times a day and the evening bath with soap.

We were gifted a pop out baby tub and I found a mesh bath insert at a thrift store that clipped well onto the edges. I was planning to just get a plastic bin or use a laudry bin with the insert, but I didn't need with the gift. The pop out works really well and folds and has a hook to hang in the shower. I used It on the table a couple of times but then just used it on the shower floor because I was terrified of dropping my baby.

After a couple of months I did start showering him on the shower floor with the hand sprayer and stopping up the drain so he could drift around on the cm of water. We don't have a tub.

At 6 months he needed a soap shower after every meal. And my husband would just hold him in the shower. When he could stand well I would just shower him standing with the hand sprayer.

I have small baby hooded towels and a bigger penguin hooded towel, more of an adult quality towel. I used the thinner ones when he was little and eventually moved permanently to the bigger one when he started walking. We have tons of baby cloths, so I always bring in two or three for a bath. I used a variety of sample shampoos at the beginning and then just used what we had in the shower, ivory and castille. The samples were mostly Eucerin and I was gifted a purple nightime Johnson and Johnson that was nice. I liked both.

Bath toys are just gifts, so a stacker water toy and a couple of squeeze animals (yes I know they harbor mold and need to be cleaned often). Currently include beach rake and shovel that he migrates all over the house and a 4 cup measuring cup. (13 months old)
