  • Less is more. Start off with the bare minimum and add as you go. Seasonal sales and buying in bulk is so tempting but clothing brands can range in size and I found myself with lots of clothing worn only a couple of times. I think shoes (with the exception of booties) were a complete waste of time until baby can actually walk.

    1. ZIPPERS!  Snaps or buttons in the middle of the night are the worst thing ever!
    2. If you get a lot of clothes gifted to you in sizes that are larger (6, 9 12m), I'd suggest returning them or just not taking the tags off and washing them quite yet.  Especially as babies grow, you never know when they'll finally reach that size and when they do, if it'll be the "right season" for it.
    3. For NB clothes, only take off tags and wash a few items initially because you don't know how big your baby will be and if you'll need as much NB clothes as you receive. My kiddo was in NB for a few weeks while I've had a few friends with 9 lb+ babies that went right into 0-3M.
    4. Socks are kind of useless.  We had him in footed sleepers almost exclusively, so we didn't need any of the super cute NB socks we bought.
    5. We had a few pair of mittens to prevent scratches but then we found footed sleepers with fold over mittens built into the sleeves (3-pack Cloud Island from Target) and those were so useful.
    6. My kid was born with a full head of hair, so we never had him in hats either.  His head was always so sweaty. lol.

  • On the sock/footed sleepers point - one thing to bear in mind is that if you think you’ll end up having the baby in a carrier a bit, it’s apparently not recommended for them to be in footed sleepers/pants while in them as the clothing gets pulled up when they’re in the carrier and the foot/toe area can become too tight and cause pain. We ended up buying booties for this purpose that snapped closed around the ankles to stay on - like these Unisex-Baby Fleece Booties Cozy Baby Bootie Socks Non Skid Gripper Bottom https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07KQC2YG4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fabt1_SbzQFbS6TGT0F?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Agree on the shoes point - we didn’t buy shoes for her until she started walking (learning to walk in bare feet is actually great for them).
  • Children’s consignment stores are the best!! You can find brand new items with the tags still on for a fraction of the cost. It does require a bit more digging but I find it so worth it, especially when baby grows SO fast and only wears an item a handful of times.
  • I agree with having a little for each size on hand. My daughter was in NB for a good 2 months so we got good use out of her NB clothes but I know some people barely used newborn clothes at all.  The little outfits were cute but to be honest, most of the time she was in sleep n plays both at night and during the day. l definitely agree with zips vs snaps. also I think there are some that have a reverse zipper (they zip from the top down so you can just unzip halfway up for diaper changes) but we didn't get any last time.
