Re: Product Spotlight: Baby Clothes!

  • For now I just have a question...a book I'm reading (Cribsheet by Emily Oster) mentions having newborn clothes that allow the baby's belly button to be exposed until the umbilical cord stump falls off. So no onesies for the first few weeks?? Do you just have to have pants and shirts or are there special newborn onesies that allow for this? Is this an all-the-time thing for the first few weeks?
  • Loading the player...
  • @whitealbum29 We use side snap shirts with mittens built in for the first little while until the cord falls off. Newborn diapers have a notch in the front to account for the cord as well (or you can fold them down a little) and then pants.

Gerber has just plain white ones too, this was just an example.
I will say though, if you have a specific going home outfit you want, the cord will totally be just fine since it’s still pretty recent, and not too hard yet. Looser jammies also work, especially if you swaddle at night just because baby isn’t moving or rubbing it a lot then.
BUT people totally just do onesies and cute outfits too, and the baby is fine. Personally it just seems like it would be uncomfortable, so we opt for the side snap shirts.

As for other clothes recommendations I would say, four kids into this, we’ve found that
    *Gerber brand runs small
*Most brands are just fine quality wise because they grow so fast and spend so little time in them
*Snaps are the devil-get zippered jammies or ones that tie at the bottom for easy middle of the night diaper changes
*Built in mittens are wonderful because newborn nails are so thin but so sharp, and it takes guts the first time you trim them
*I have yet to find socks that actually stay on.
*Find onesies with envelope shoulders!!! Google it. When they have a blow out, you can just pull the shirt down over their body instead of over their head getting poop in their hair.
*Get a few hats. It helps them regulate their temperature and stay warm, which I’m sure will be important in January depending on where you live.

  • @savykay oooh thank you, I haven't looked for side snap shirts yet but now I will! Will look into the envelope shoulders too!

I have also heard that onesies with magnetic closures are a game changer - even better than zippers vs. snaps. Like these -- https://www.babylist.com/gp/magnetic-me-organic-cotton-footie/19794/398736

I've always heard baby socks don't stay on but I did put a couple pairs of these booties on our registry -- https://www.babylist.com/gp/zutano-cozie-fleece-booties/5861/19793 -- because they apparently really stay on. We'll see...
  • @whitealbum29 those booties are amazing! I got the knock off cheaper ones on amazon and they definitely stay on much better than socks.
  • I'm a FTM that already has such a bad baby clothes addiction haha. Lou Lou & Co is my vice now. I'm in a BST group on FB to help with the price somewhat  :|
  • We did jammies immediately and the cord was fine. If exposed, just be careful with blankets rubbing on it.

+1 to zuatno booties!!!! We also used the target version with equal success

We looooove baby nightgowns for newborns if we are just at home. Makes diaper changing so easy. Zipper jammies are awesome and if you can find two way zippers thats a bonus
  • @whitealbum29 we just used onesies and sleepers and DD's cord was fine.

+1 also to Zutano's... I haven't tried knock offs but anything similar probably would stay on better than socks.

Footie sleepers are amazing. Zip > snaps. Wear them all day, everyday.

Cute outfits are fun but not super practical when they're itty bitty. I've personally found that more expensive 'fancy' brands don't fit very well. I really like Carters but be aware that the different Carter's brands (like what is sold at Target and on Amazon) fit different than OG Carters. Makes zero sense. Cloud Island brand is HUGE (like one full size bigger than other brands), Gerber's tends to be on the smaller side (as @savykay said!). All of the clothes that I've gotten from Primary are really great quality and fit well. Their customer service is amazing too.

I'm embarrassed to admit that didn't know this when my daughter was a newborn but babies are not supposed to sleep in hats to prevent SIDS. The nurses at the hospital had her sleeping in a hat the entire time we were there (it was January, in the midwest) so I thought this was just what you did to keep her head warm. So, lesson learned for this time around. But, during the day... little soft cotton hats are amazing!

  • @lacroixliz well thank you for the education, I didn't know babies shouldn't sleep in hats. I guess it makes sense because it can end up covering their face of they wiggle a bunch
  • Highly recommend Caden Lanes clothes they are so soft!! 😍

love all this advice thank you!!
  • Honestly my kids lived in onesies for the first few months. Since this is a winter baby, I’ve bought a TON of footed sleepers and he will wear those constantly. I made the mistake with #1 of buying the super cute outfits in little sizes and it was such a pain in the ass. Two piece outfits usually result is shirts being bunched up or pulled up as you’re holding them or putting them in the carrier. You can put a onesie underneath but thats more clothes to weed through during diaper changes and there are a whole lot of changes happening at that age. I only buy onesie outfits until like 12 month size and then I move to two piece.

Gerber does run REALLY small. Carters is weird sizing depending on the item. I like Cloud Island a lot and some things I’ve bought run small and some run big. Walmart is pretty true to size IMO. Baby socks definitely don’t stay on which is why I do footed sleepers. I don’t bother with the newborn gloves because both my kids hated them but I only buy the jammies with the roll down cuff for bedtime because otherwise they scratch themselves.
