Product Spotlight: Diaper Bags

I’m going to skip maternity clothes... I feel like we already covered that on the thread about it.

So tell us what works for you... specific brand? Backpack? Tote? Purse like? Do you swear by a dedicated diaper bag or using a regular bag that doubles as a diaper bag?

We did the same as @moguippy: backpack diaper bag, and a mini diaper bag in each car.

Our backpack that doubles as a diaper bag and we really like: United By Blue convertible carryall

The mini diaper bag that we keep in each car (and that I take into the doctor's office, church, etc): Skip Hop Pronto

Also, keep a wet bag in the diaper bag. It's basically a waterproof bag that can go in the washer when it's dirty. Sold for use mainly to hold wet cloth diapers on the go, but it's also great for putting blowout clothes and such into it. There are tons of brands/kinds, but here's the one that you can buy at Target and I use.
  • @moguippy and @hannahbananas11That is all great advice.

I've been eyeing the Freshly Picked classic bag which is a backpack. It's the pricier side it seems as diaper bags go, so would love to hear any feedback on if it's worth it or just frivolous. But then again, don't we all need frivolous things sometimes!?  ;)
  • Any bag will work as a diaper bag. Some things to consider: pick something you find attractive, interior organization, durability, carry style.

If you find a bag you love that doesn't have great organization, you can do that yourself with packing cubes or zipper pouches. There are endless options!!! I like the visibility of tote bag style and appreciate the hands free of a backpack. DH prefers a backpack.

Another thing to consider is having a larger bag for day trips, and a smaller pouch to pull out for running into a store (which has a diaper, small pack of wipes, and maybe a new outfit) you can always restock when you get to the car and don't have to carry everything with you at all times.

I also personally prefer separate bags for separate occasions. I have a bag perfectly organized for myself how I like it, and everytime I sent that to Grandma's house for the day it came back a jumbled mess. So now grandma's house has its own tote bag 🤷🏻‍♀️ we also have separate daycare totes that take a bit more abuse

+1 to an extra mom shirt
+1 to always carrying a wet bag!!!
  • We also used a different bag for daycare but now we just send a lunch and she keeps most of the stuff there.

We use these disposable bags for blowout clothes. I didn’t even thing about using a wet bag which is silly since we have a ton from using them for pump parts.
My SIL gave is these (they are basically similar to dog poop bags):

  • I agree with everyone else. We like the backpack style and just choose the size that seems right for you. I can load that thing up!

i also kept a wet bag in there for blowouts. Side note: don’t forget to put new clothes in there when you have to use your backups. My son had a blow out at the doctors office in January and I forgot to refill the bag with clothes. It was awful!

i always keep a pacifier clip in there and use that to strap a toy to the high chair if we go out to eat so he doesn’t keep throwing the toy on the floor. I clip it to his shirt or the high chair.

@kkfishy9 you will use it a lot so make sure you get something you like! I don’t think it hurts to spend more on the diaper bag because you want it to be comfortable, cute and be able to take a beating.
  • @kkfishy9 a new diaper bag was my biggest splurge for my second kid and it was worth it. I had been eyeing the Fawn Design backpack since my first was little and I wore the crap out of that thing. I finally retired it about a year ago.

Now I need a new one so I’m going to get Azaria which is super similar to Fawn but I can’t help it , that’s the look I like. 😅

To any new moms, you’ll be wearing this thing every day for (possibly) up to 3 years... longer if you have another kid in the meantime. Find something you really like!
  • @birdiejo the Fawn and the Azaria are so cute too!!
  • I love this post! For the first kiddo I just used the bag below I already had and put a changing pad in it.

For kiddo #2 I think I need something bigger but my must haves in the bag were, gallon ziplock for soiled clothes, change of clothes, and a roll of doggie poo bags. I found they are basically the same as the ones for babies but less expensive and we already have dogs. We use those when we travel to contain dirty diapers when we don’t have a trash can close.

we did put small diaper bags in the cars and honestly we have never used them. One thing I did in the house was put together a changing basket in the living room so I didn’t have to haul him to his room every time he needed a change.

i am thinking about the bag below for this kid since the oldest will only be 20 months so I will have to be able to fit items for both kids this time:

  • Y’all convinced me to splurge. I just bought the Dagne Dover Indi bag. 😳
  • So I am a STM but I am really struggling with diaper bags. I had a skip hop cross body with jonah and I loved the style and size, but felt like it was narrow and hard to fit a lot of stuff in it. we didn't solely breast feed so i needed one that had room for bottles and the formula stuff, and I also am an overpacker so I never wanted to be caught without extra stuff. he also blew out ALL THE TIME. so i always packed like 3-4 outfits. and when he wasn't pooping everywhere, he was spitting up all the time. So extra clothes were a must. I just felt like between all that stuff and spit rags and diapers and wipes, etc, it was so hard to find anything. So then I switched to a backpack one from amazon that I was using for my pumping stuff from work, and it worked a little better but i still felt like the organization wasn't great. I then splurged in Feb and bought a different bag off of amazon,

I love the look of it, but don't think it has much more storage than the back pack and I don't like the way it lays when i carry it either. So then I bought this backpack style at once upon a child and I like it for Jonah but have no clue what I want to do with two kids. (I have a bag problem). For Jonah as a toddler I bring a cup of water, diapers, wipes, a change of clothes, stuff for out to eat incase we need it like a bib and a disposable place mat. and the changing pad of course. UGHHH i just don't know. :D
  • @PinkKathryn12 sounds like you need my method of a bigger bag/tote of supplies for the car and one to carry around 😂 car bag can have restaurant and additional extra outfits. To go bag has one change of clothes a couple diapers, etc
  • @PinkKathryn12 I’m also wondering if our current bag is going to be big enough for two kiddos. I always have like an emergency toy truck, clothes, plus all the usual stuff for my toddler. I think if I packed the minimum for both kids we might be able to fit it but who knows. I really don’t want a bigger bag so I’m just gonna wing it I think. And beef up our car supplies. My DS spit up all the time so I totally understand having 62618 burp cloths and outfit changes.
  • @jumpy57 @moguippy probably true i should just put more extra clothes in the car etc so i have to carry less! I considered getting like a small bag for my older and diaper bag for my little and just splitting their stuff.

Also if anyone wants the bag I linked above it is basically brand new cuz covid means i used it in public once so I’ll sell it for like half 20$ hahaha before my husband realizes how many diaper bags we have.
i think it’s a nice bag just not what i want. Haha
