Re: Healthy Habits October

  • Would love for this thread to be all forms of healthy habits (food, mental, physical) so please join in regardless of the area you are focusing on.

What's a "small win" you have had recently?
Drinking water! I know I need to get back up to 100oz a day, but have made improvements up to 75oz, so happy with my progress so far.

What habits/goals are you focusing on? How are they going?

Food: MH was just given doctors orders to avoid starchy foods and sugars, so I am going to try to join him for as long as I can with lean proteins and lots of fresh veggies.

Movement: Due to having back surgery a few months ago, I am still very limited on what exercise I can do. (Well between that and RE orders). My movement goal for now is to do more walking. I want to get back up to an hour a few times a week.

Mental: PGAL is so hard for me, so I should probably do meditations or something, but have no goals here yet. Would love to hear what you are doing for mental health!

What has you motivated? Where can we help bring accountability? I had horrible morning sickness my entire pregnancy last time, so I would like to

GTKY: What is your favorite form of movement? (Walking, Running, Spin, Rowing, etc) I really miss running and rowing and yoga too! But walking does help me clear my heads

okay long post, but I am excited for this!

  • I’m pumped for this channel! I try to live a well rounded healthy life (within reason 🤣). Prepregnacy I enjoyed hiking, walking, kayaking, yoga and some normal workouts. I usually eat like 75-85% healthy. And I practice mindfulness. Im 5w+3d and I’m soooo tired! I’ve only kinda worked out once but I have kept up with walking my dog and eating healthy. I’m hoping to keep up with my activities through as much of my pregnancy as possible. I usually don’t put pressure on myself so Im use to exercising when I feel like it.
  • What's a "small win" you have had recently? - I’ve been managing to stay active at work even though we are swamped.
What habits/goals are you focusing on? How are they going? - I’m trying to continue taking the stairs at work as long as possible in this pregnancy. My office is on the 4th floor which is technically the 6th floor because we have a G and LL. Also trying to keep cooking most meals at home instead of take out no matter what I feel like.

What has you motivated? Where can we help bring accountability? - staying healthy and active throughout pregnancy. Encouragement on the toughest of days that just because one day or week was bad doesn’t mean the rest is not worth the time

GTKY: What is your favorite form of movement? (Walking, Running, Spin, Rowing, etc)  I Enjoy running but haven’t in some time. Now I stick to toddler chasing and running to be active.
  • What's a "small win" you have had recently? I'm proud that all through quarantine, I kept up my workout routine, and was active at least 30 minutes a day, every day.

What habits/goals are you focusing on? How are they going? Right now, nutrition is my biggest struggle. I have known that I'm pregnant for exactly one week and I have definitely been using it as an excuse to eat more/different than I normally would. What's annoying about that is that I was ON POINT for the entire month of September. So it's been a definite mental challenge already.

What has you motivated? Where can we help bring accountability? I am down about 80 pounds since Feb 2018, so my biggest motivation is to stay active (as much as possible) and continue to eat well (75-80% of the time) throughout pregnancy so that I can eventually get back to where I am now, because it's literally the first time in my entire life that I'm in a normal weight range.

GTKY: What is your favorite form of movement? (Walking, Running, Spin, Rowing, etc) I have Beachbody On Demand so I do all my workouts from home. I'll try pretty much anything, but I tend to enjoy strength training the most. I only do cardio because I know that I have to.

  • Love this thread!

What’s a “small win” you have had recently?

Since I found out I was pregnant on Monday the 28th of September, I have worked out at least 30 min everyday since. On a normal week I workout about 5 days a week but take the weekends off and have my wine or bourbon...but since that’s out the window, I’ve been working out everyday instead!

What habits/goals are you focusing on? How are they going?

i want to keep up my healthy eating, I’ve been doing weight watchers for a year and although I reached my goal weight within the first 4 months, I’ve been using it since to maintain. But in the last 8 days I’ve been STARVING, so I’ve been eating more and stuff I wouldn’t normally eat (like all my kids crackers), so I need to get back to mostly just whole foods.

What has you motivated? Where can we help bring accountability?

Staying in shape during this pregnancy like I did with my other three babies is key for me. But being more home bound this time really cuts down on my daily steps so I’d like to get outside and walk in addition to my at home workouts most days to up my steps.

GTKY: What is your favorite form of movement? (Walking, Running, Spin, Rowing, etc)

Openfit app! I focus on Xtend Barre and Pilates mostly but throw in some HIIT and strength training as well

  • What's a "small win" you have had recently?  I've gotten in 30 minutes of exercise the last 5 days, I was a little scared to exercise at first, thought I would mess something up, so it was a big mental hurdle for me to get over!

What habits/goals are you focusing on? How are they going?  I really need to focus on keeping my stress and anxiety low.  Intense exercise is normally my outlet for that, but I know I need to keep activity to a moderate level.  I'm trying to find other ways to try and keep my cool.

What has you motivated? Where can we help bring accountability?  I know I need to make changes to keep me and the baby healthy, its as simple as that.

GTKY: What is your favorite form of movement? (Walking, Running, Spin, Rowing, etc) Tennis!  I'm normally a singles player but I think that's probably too intense to do right now so I've benched myself to the doubles court for the time being.  I'm playing for the first time since my FET tonight and I have to admit I'm quite nervous!  It will likely be the most vigorous and longest time I've been active so far.
  • This is a great thread!

I feel like I haven’t had a small win lately. I’m working on getting back on track.

I’m currently focusing on mindful eating. I lost all my baby weight and then some by tracking my food for the last year.  Right now because I need to eat to not be sick and a lot doesn’t sound good to me I’m just being more mindful as to what I’m putting in my body. I have given up counting calories.

    I love a having a check in!

GTKY: yoga. I plan to keep my current practice going until January and then I’ll switch to a prenatal class. Though during class last night I found so many inversions were making me sick.
  • Just reading through all of these is helping keep up my motivation this week. My walks the last few days have been shorter than I hoped, but it is hard to get a real walk in with a toddler that wants to walk too.

@ellieemc26 I think the rule of thumb while pregnant is just keep your breathing at a conversational rate, as long as you can still hold a conversation you should be good! Have fun playing tonight!
  • What's a "small win" you have had recently? I did yoga today after work. I hadn't exercised in months, so just one class is a big win for me! I did a first trimester prenatal video so I wouldn't have to worry about what poses to avoid, but I'm not sure I'll be able to stick with prenatal videos. "Imagine you're drinking a milk shake.. through your vagina." lol.

What habits/goals are you focusing on? How are they going? So many. I'm trying to stop skipping meals (and not eating candy instead of a meal), drink more water, and exercise on a regular basis. I have a high stress/hours job and let myself get reallllly unhealthy the last few years.

What has you motivated? Where can we help bring accountability? I'm not exaggerating when I say I've been realllllly unhealthy the last few years. I've gone from a good weight to borderline underweight, miss meals all the time, sometimes go whole days without water... all things that I know I should change for myself, but that I HAVE to change for baby. Hoping to build some habits now that I'll keep up later too.

GTKY: What is your favorite form of movement? (Walking, Running, Spin, Rowing, etc) Yoga. I like a healthy dose of positive affirmations / "you were successful just by walking in the door" (or turning on the video) with my workout.
  • @nlc_atx Milkshake and vagina are two words that should never be in the same sentence! Hope your new habits stick and you see more and more small wins!
  • @nlc_atx omg, I can't even imagine what they were talking about with milkshakes and vaginas.....and I don't think I want to know!

As for me, had a pretty good week last week.  Fatigue is definitely impacting my ability to exercise so some days I've been forcing myself through or I find myself exhausted for several hours after I finish.  But I did pretty good last week just taking one day off.

I'm starting to feel like I'm getting off track with eating, I'm hungry all the time and some unhealthy choices have started to sneak in.  Need to focus on healthy foods this week!
  • Hello wonderful community!

Love reading all your replies. A small win for me since pregnant is not binging on carbs and eating less sweets.

Goals I'm focusing on are getting my thyroid under control, which is just labs and working with my doctor, but for me it's also getting more active. Exercise hasn't been a regular part of my routine for a while now.

Being pregnant definitely has me motivated. I want the healthiest pregnancy and baby possible. But it's tough because of the fatigue.

I also have relatives in town so things are crazy right now. But when they leave I plan to do my favorite form of movement 5 times a week: going for long walks in the woods by my house! We are blessed to have a hiking trail and my husband and I used to walk it a lot.
  • What's a "small win" you have had recently? I have exercised every morning for the last 29 days. I do 2-3 sun salutation flows as soon as I get out of bed. I am counting this as exercise!
What habits/goals are you focusing on? How are they going? I am now focusing on my mental health and have been trying to incorporate a daily meditation. I am using the Headspace app's pregnancy pack, but I've only completed two sessions from the first pack. I tried the third yesterday (?) and I just could not focus, I was so restless that I just gave up. So, not going great. I keep reminding myself it's a practice.
What has you motivated? Where can we help bring accountability? I have been using the Fabulous app since the beginning of quarantine to help cultivate healthy habits and I have found it really helpful at making incremental changes that stick. I think seeing other people lay out their goals, wins, as well as their struggles is helpful for accountability—cheering someone else on can be a really strong motivator!
    GTKY: yoga, walking/hiking, and volleyball.
  • @nlc_atx what an unpleasant analogy! There has to be a better way to get across what they want you to do rather than drinking a milkshake through your vagina haha. It is hilarious though.
Can you start with just one of your goals? Say, drink a glass of water first thing in the morning. Then after a week of that, build on the water drinking goal? One thing I really like about the habit app I use, is that it gets you to focus on building one habit at a time. Once you've incorporated that habit into your daily life, you can then add in more. It's been helpful for me to not bite off more than I can chew and then just give up because I am not seeing the results/changes.
  • What's a "small win" you have had recently?

I had a pretty active week last week, lots of movement!

What habits/goals are you focusing on? How are they going?
I am focusing on eating cleaner, more fruits and veggies, and moving at least 30 minutes daily intentionally.

What has you motivated? Where can we help bring accountability?

Right now my motivation is just getting healthier for my pregnancy and delivery. These check ins are great! Eventually a step challenge might be fun!

GTKY: What is your favorite form of movement? (Walking, Running, Spin, Rowing, etc)
Swimming (although I can’t do It often), biking, and yoga.

  • Small win? The last month I’ve been getting up early to do a 15 or 30 minute work out. I’m not a gym rat so I’m pretty proud of this.

Habits or goals? I have been very hungry so I’m trying to make sure I’m snacking on nutritionally dense foods to actually quell my hunger and drinking enough water.

What has you motivated? Well honestly if I just eat crackers then I’m hungry all the time so my motivation is eat right so I am not constantly hungry

GTKY? I love hiking, it soothes my soul. Next best is yoga but strength and HIIT classes are fun too.
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @Omie_Wise - I love hiking as well! But we live in an area where it isn't very hike-able. I love to mushroom hunt when hiking. I don't eat them and am just now getting comfortable with picking them to examine their gills or stalks, I mostly just take photos and look them up later.

  • @disgruntled_pelican My husband loves mushroom looking as well! It’s fascinating how many different types, colors, and shapes there are. We watched a documentary about mushrooms for his birthday that was super interesting. It was called Fantastic Fungi.
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @pickle-chips I think my goal would be to start exercising, but my reason for not exercising is usually lack of water/good meals. Having in mind that I want to exercise actually helps me get the other things done. A priority shift in prioritizing myself/health over work is probably easier for me in one big swoop, but I know that's different than how most people operate.

But I like your idea of counting 2-3 sun salutations as exercise. Making something like that a minimum goal is something I could adopt!
  • @disgruntled_pelican I like the idea of a step challenge!
  • @nlc_atx and the thing about starting with the goal of 2-3 sun salutations or 15 squats or, or, or is that it is very easy to build on. So after a week of at least 3 flows, I started to add in holding in the plank position for 5 deep breaths. I added some chair poses. I have done some lunges and so on. Building my confidence by starting with something "small" (movement of the body is movement of the body, imho) has been really key for me.
  • If anyone has any good yoga/stretching videos they’d like to share, please feel free to link below 😊 I watched this 16-minute stretch which is good for all trimesters: https://youtu.be/g7jtkqEUM_Y
  • At first I wasn’t sure I was going to be into this thread but I decided it’s a good thing! I had just resolved to walk on the treadmill every week day (or every day I can) But then I was super tired and then I was distracted. But I can def use some motivation and tracking and stretching!
  • @kaw726 Way to go with the Peloton!
@hillbillywife I definitely need the motivation and accountability to start walking.

Hi everyone! Jumping in on this as I also need motivation and accountability

What's a "small win" you have had recently? Lost a few pounds yesterday. Spiked back up after I ate junk food yesterday, but hopefully it'll settle back down if I'm better about eating today

What habits/goals are you focusing on? How are they going? Water intake (I'm always terrible with it, so trying to get back at it) and exercise (had been working on C25K, but in general had been trying to work out 4-5 days a week). I'm also going to keep an eye on my diet, but the calorie counting isn't as problematic during pregnancy for me. My main problem, normally, is alcohol intake which is removed from the equation. I also bloat pretty badly and have a low appetite, so if anything I need to eat more than I want to while pregnant.

What has you motivated? Where can we help bring accountability? I need to check in, particularly with exercise, otherwise I won't do it. When the fatigue hits I'll get really lazy, particularly if I haven't gained weight (before I didn't really gain anything before ~16 weeks, though my belly definitely puffed out). That said, I definitely have a spare 20lbs or so on me, so it's not a bad idea to try to get into good habits.

GTKY: What is your favorite form of movement? Walking/hiking and paddling (kayaking, paddleboard). Water sports are mostly done for the season, so walking and hiking it is
  • @akoros glad you are here! I am with you and like to check in for the accountability. It gets so tricky to exercise/move when you are exhausted! 4-5 days a week is awesome! Keep doing what you can

I'm so glad this is on here since I really try to stay active while pregnant, but at times it is just soooo hard. So having people to connect with who are in the same boat is great!

What's a "small win" you have had recently? It's getting COLD where I live, so transitioning to indoor exercise has been my most recent "win" I really enjoy running/walking/biking OUTDOORS. But we are getting to the time of the year where that isn't doable all the time. This week I ran on our treadmill for the first time in about 6 months, so I'm calling that a win!

What habits/goals are you focusing on? How are they going? I am focusing on eating more fruits/vegetables. Trying to incorporate them into each meal as well as snacks. So far its going well, but every once in a while a pack of starbursts sounds so much better than the apple I packed for a snack.

What has you motivated? Where can we help bring accountability? Checking in with others keeps me going, so a group like this is great!

GTKY: What is your favorite form of movement? I love anything outdoors, hiking, walking, running, biking. My go to is running! I love the way I feel when I am done. Previous pregnancy I was able to run until the 3rd trimester, so I am hopeful to make it that far this time, but time will tell
  • What's a "small win" you have had recently?
I've been working on taking time for myself, even if that means giving DS a tablet so I can nap. I never take time for myself so this is big

What habits/goals are you focusing on? How are they going?
Just keep moving. My watch has a tracker that I set to 8000 steps and usually hit it.

What has you motivated? Where can we help bring accountability?
Were trying to buy a house so that means cleaning and getting rid of junk which is a huge help on my mental state. I struggle with it when I dont have the energy and the stuff piles up but when I can get rid of one box of junk it makes me want to do more

GTKY: What is your favorite form of movement? (Walking, Running, Spin, Rowing, etc)
Walking and elliptical but I don't have one of them lol
  • I didnt think I would post in here but thought why not and it will help keep me motivated.

What's a "small win" you have had recently?
I'm trying to stay as active as I can throughout my pregnancy and keep in shape. My small win is that I went on my treadmill twice this week despite being crazy tired and having no energy. I did one day of 45 mins and today for 25 mins.

What habits/goals are you focusing on? How are they going? I bought a treadmill and my DH bought me an elliptical for downstairs in the basement. We also bought a nice weights set and yoga mats and other things to work out with. Building own our little house gym because of covid. My goal is to force myself to use the treadmill for at least a min of 30 mins everyday and lift some light weights along with some pregnancy safe exercises. Its been a struggle this week as I have been soo tired and have no energy to get off the couch lol Gotta love first tri.

What has you motivated? Where can we help bring accountability? The baby has me motivated. I just try to remember that what's best for me and the baby is to stay healthy.

GTKY: What is your favorite form of movement? (Walking, Running, Spin, Rowing, etc) My favorite is walking/running on the treadmill and using an elliptical. In the summer months I do love rollerblading outside in the sun or going for walks. I also do tap dancing once a week at a studio and that keeps me moving which I love.
  • What's a "small win" you have had recently?
Fruits and vegetables haven’t made me sick this time around. I’ve actually been craving them this time.

What habits/goals are you focusing on? How are they going?
I didn’t exercise at all my first pregnancy. I’ve been weight lifting and running pre-pregnancy so I would like to continue. I’ve been slacking due to the exhaustion with early pregnancy though.

What has you motivated? Where can we help bring accountability?
Feeling healthy and having a physically fit pregnancy keeps me motivated.

GTKY: What is your favorite form of movement? (Walking, Running, Spin, Rowing, etc)
    Running and weight lifting
