How many kids do you already have? Ages? DS will be 4 in November
How are your other kids doing this week? He’s doing a lot better this week. We had a rough two weeks but for whatever reason he’s magically much calmer this week. Whatever the reason is, I’ll take it.
Rants/Raves? Concerns/questions? I’m trying to figure out how and when to tell DS. Anyone have input? Also, I’m horrible at explaining things but ask don’t like to sugar coat details like body parts, etc. (like, a penis is a penis and a vagina is a vagina and babies are born not delivered by a stork) Does anyone have book recommendations for the 3-4 year age range to explain pregnancy? We got the usborne book and although I love so many of their books I was disappointed it focused so much on other animals rather than human pregnancy. I mean, it’s great in some ways but didn’t get the impact I was going for.
GTKY: What TV family (can be reality, sitcom, or whatever) would you love to be a member of? Hmmm probably How I Met Your Mother. I was basically already Lily. DH and I met when I was 18/he was 21 and allll of our friends stayed single for a long time after. Several of his friends still are. We were the first to have a kid even though I was 28? When I had DS. Omg guys I have no idea how old I am. Wtf. It’s just gone.
How many kids do you already have? Ages? Three boys 4, 2, and 1
How are your other kids doing this week? We're having a fairly good week! The 1 year old has been quite clingy though. I think he's getting more teeth.
Rants/Raves? Concerns/questions? Excited for some fall activities this weekend!!
GTKY: What TV family (can be reality, sitcom, or whatever) would you love to be a member of? The first that comes to mind is the Parenthood family. Second would be the Duggars haha!
@forevertired no book recommendations but I'd just go with the flow. Maybe he'll ask a bunch of questions but maybe he'll just be excited about getting a baby sibling! We tell our kids the truth too about how bodies work but my 4 year old hasn't gone that far to ask how the baby got in there, etc. This is his third sibling too and has never asked that. So I'd just start by maybe showing him your ultrasound and ask do you know what this is? Or even a big brother book or t-shirt to tell him. And see how it goes. If he has lots of questions maybe you can say you'll learn about it together or something. ETA... a quick Amazon search of "how babies are made for kids" brings up several options!
@forevertired I know there are some good ones out there that even talk about IVF and adoption, which may be better for slightly older kids, but it depends on how you want to go about it. I have the book my mom read to me when I was little, called "So That's How I Was Born." She likes listening to it. I started reading it to her probably when she was three, well before we even decided to have another one, just because I figured she might like to know about these things!
How many kids do you already have? Ages? 1 DD, age 4
How are your other kids doing this week? She's doing great! She is loving school and I love that she loves it. Not to mention it's nice to have a couple hours to myself in the afternoons 4 days a week...
Rants/Raves? Concerns/questions? I had to tell DD that I'm having a baby because I was throwing up so much and she was scared. I said, "You're not going to get sick. I'm feeling sick because my body is growing something." And she guessed, "A baby?" So I couldn't lie to her! She's been pretty chill about it so far and is excited. I'm spending the rest of my pregnancy explaining to her that the baby is not a baby doll!! She keeps telling me that the baby will be sleeping in her room and she'll be dressing it up and whatnot.
GTKY: What TV family (can be reality, sitcom, or whatever) would you love to be a member of? The lighthearted side of me says the Tanner family, because I love Full House and it was such a wholesome, dorky show. The realistic side of me says the Firefly family from my favorite horror movie, House of 1000 Corpses, because they always had each other's backs and made it work through all their dysfunctions. To me, that's more realistic. But I'm a weirdo.
How are your other kids doing this week? They’re doing alright. The big one has been extra dramatic this week and the little one has been extra cuddly and sweet. I’m pretending like they’re trying to balance each other out. 😂
Rants/Raves? Concerns/questions? It’s not so much a rave really, just kind of a blah thing. DD1 is in 1st grade and we chose to homeschool her this year because virtual learning was so hard for her last year in kindergarten. I knew that at least a portion of this year would be virtual and I didn’t want to put her through that again, so we pulled her out. She said the other night after a difficult homeschooling day that she liked her old (public) school better than doing it at home. It hurt my feelings a bit, but I can’t blame her. I know she doesn’t understand that even when/if in-person instruction starts again it won’t be anything like what she had in the start of kindergarten. There’s really no way to explain it to her. Stupid Covid!
GTKY: What TV family (can be reality, sitcom, or whatever) would you love to be a member of? I’m with @riff323, I’d join the Tanners on Full House! I’ve been watching 7th Heaven lately and that family is a close second. I’m a fan of the cheesy family shows!
How many kids do you already have? Ages? 3 kids, 6, 4, and 22 months
How are your other kids doing this week? Older two are good, but the youngest is not sleeping at all. It has been brutal. So exhausted from that.
Rants/Raves? Concerns/questions? I switched OB's for this baby and just found out their practice doesn't do the NT scan. I had it with my other three, so thought that was kind of odd especially given I am AMA. They said they would refer me to an MFM that would do it for us and have lots of patients that opt to do that, but I kind of feel like I'm being extra. However, I know if my results from the genetic testing come back with any type of elevated risk I will be kicking myself for not having it done. So, my question is, does your practice do the NT scan? Should I take the referral and see if insurance covers it?
GTKY: What TV family (can be reality, sitcom, or whatever) would you love to be a member of? Bravermans! @runso@runsoncoffee Parenthood is one of my absolute favorites. I also wouldn't mind being a Dunphy sibling.
@pelorunningmama we do the NT scan but it's considered part of the California state screening combined with 1st tri and 2nd tri bloodwork (around 11wks and 16wks). It's pretty standard unless you get NIPT I think (then might be one or the other).
How many kids do you already have? Ages? 2 girls, 3yo and 16mo
How are your other kids doing this week? DD1 is great. DD2 is very meltdown-y lol. She also hasn't been sleeping well for the past couple of months. DH has been an absolute champ getting up MOTN but then he brings her to me at 4:30-5:30 and I can't fall back asleep at all or for quite a while. So I think he and I are averaging about the same amount of sleep, especially since DD1 will sleep until 7:30 sometimes.
Rants/Raves? Concerns/questions? Rave: we found a house we love that's under what we wanted to spend (have seen quite a few a bit over what we ideally wanted to spend). Likely starting the pre-approval process today in case it's still there in a month and a half but who knows with the market the way it is. We also think we want to get the preapproval and find a realtor and do a virtual tour before we get there (we're currently across the country). Rant: My sister has a good number of covid symptoms and is getting tested today or tmrw. I'm getting a little frustrated with how she and my mom are handling this b/c my mom is still going to her retail job and my sister isn't wearing a mask in the house (she has fatigue, nausea/vomiting, shortness of breath, and headaches). We are supposed to live with them for a couple of months when we move and I just don't think they're being super responsible with how they're handing this.
GTKY: What TV family (can be reality, sitcom, or whatever) would you love to be a member of? Ooo The Dunphys is a good one. DH is very Phil-like and I can be a bit Claire-like lol. I think Phil is DH's idol.
How many kids do you already have? Ages? My son is 21 months!
How are your other kids doing this week? We’ve been doing well. His sleep has been improving after some pretty tiring nights. He’s liking gymnastics class with Daddy.
Rants/Raves? Concerns/questions? Anyone else’s kid eat all the produce as you put it in the cart 🤣? He ate half an apple (I quickly wipes it down), most of a banana, and tried to tear through the wrapping of a cucumber.
GTKY: What TV family (can be reality, sitcom, or whatever) would you love to be a member of?
Oh goodness, this probably changes depending on what I’m currently watching. I would totally want to be the offspring of Jay & Gloria on Modern Family 🤣. Really any of the couples on the show, but I just like their dynamic. I also love Sookie & Jackson on Gilmore Girls, so I’d be down with them as my parents aha.
Hubby & Me: Born 1993 Married: August 2013 Son: December 2018 Baby in heaven: February 2020, was due Sept
@pelorunningmama I posted this same question in the 9/28 check in thread, but my practice outsources the NT scan for the 12 week appointment along with all the other genetics stuff. I'm seeing the same practice that I saw for my first. With my first I opted to skip the NT scan due to insurance reasons with whoever they outsourced to, but now I have new insurance so I'm going to do the NT scan and NIPT bloodwork this time around. It's definitely a bit confusing and it seems no one has the time to explain why its done this way but I think it has to do with the ever changing genetic testing options and how complicated it can get. So the practices sometimes outsource it
How many kids do you already have? Ages? DD, almost 18 months
How are your other kids doing this week? She's great, so funny. But also melt-downy when she can't explain or communicate what she wants.
Rants/Raves? Concerns/questions?
GTKY: What TV family (can be reality, sitcom, or whatever) would you love to be a member of? I can't think of one that I'd particularly want to be a part of, but for better or worse I've been compared to Claire Dunphy on many occasions...
How many kids do you already have? Ages? DS will be 4 in November
How are your other kids doing this week? He is doing pretty good. We've started going to playgrounds again and that his been really fun. It is also finally a few degrees cooler here so being outside isn't completely miserable.
Rants/Raves? Concerns/questions? I got the genetics results back this week and everything looks good. Also found out we are having another boy. A little sad I won't get a girl but also excited to give DS a brother.
GTKY: What TV family (can be reality, sitcom, or whatever) would you love to be a member of?
Modern Family seems pretty wholesome and fun.
@forevertired Hiiii! I've been a little MIA here. So freaking tired and busy with work lately. I was no good at keeping it from DS. Once we got our genetics results back, we gave him a Big Brother shirt and announced to parents. We've told DS that I'm trying to grow him a little brother in my tummy. We went and looked at my photo book from being pregnant with him and his first year.
@emeraldisle17 I must have missed your question but glad I’m not alone in the confusion! Thank you so much for explaining. That does make more sense. If my insurance will allow it, I’m going to do both. In the instance something is genetically different, I want time to prepare.
How many kids do you already have? Ages? Three. 5, 3, & 1.
How are your other kids doing this week? The bigs are good. The baby is having major separation anxiety - I totally get it, she’s majorly a covid baby in that I think we hit the stranger danger timing right at the beginning of covid and now she starts crying if we’re anywhere (other than home) and I walk out of sight. Our first 2 kiddos were daycare babies so we didn’t have much of an issue with this at all because they got used to school really young. Anyway, this is new to me and she feels almost too old for it and yet, here we are.
Rants/Raves? Concerns/questions? My husband was supposed to run a marathon in December and it just got rescheduled to the spring...april...30th 🤣🤣 My EDD is 4/20 & all 3 of our babies were late (4 days, 5 days, 3 days) soooo I’m really curious to see how this all pans out for the hubs! 😆
GTKY: What TV family (can be reality, sitcom, or whatever) would you love to be a member of? Guys I’m loving the responses!!! I think 7th Heaven because I allllways wanted a really big family and lots of siblings
@forevertired Thoughts on telling a 3/4 year old...I’m with @runsoncoffee that I’d reco just going with the flow. Sometimes I gear myself up for a big convo and my kid is like “meh okay whatever” 😆 Starting with the sono is a great way to show something real but still be casual. Same with a book. 3/almost 4 is old enough that I bet he’ll understand a lot! I think the best advice someone gave me (when I was pregnant with #3, so #1 was almost 4) was to be pretty realistic about what things would look like when the baby was there so little things like “did you know, the baby is going to have a car seat right next to yours in the car?” “Did you know that the baby is going to have tiny diapers?” Sounds kind of basic but I think at that age all those tangible everyday things are a really big deal, so starting to talk about it easy and often (but very casually!!) can help!
@kelseyyh Our kids ALWAYS want apples at the grocery store! In fact, they pretty much associate going to the grocery store with getting to pick out an Apple. The past few times (covid) I’ve been majorly side eyed so I stopped this past time and made them hold their apples until we got into the car. But man, love the grocery store fruit bribes!
How many kids do you already have? Ages? An 8 year old daughter.
How are your other kids doing this week? She has been helping my husband build a chicken coop all week long, they're picking up more chickens now and she is so excited. I'm so proud of how hard she's been working.
Rants/Raves? Concerns/questions? Nervous for my next appointment. I also wish I had a magical genie to unpack my house. We also, don't own this house yet, because our buyers financing fell through 2 days before close, so we're renting. We lost thousands of dollars in the process (had to pay a whole lot upfront for renting this house, had bought items for home improvement of this house before it all fell through, draining our savings, and now we're selling our house for 4k less) and buying groceries right now is a struggle while balancing two house payments. We're praying the new buyers finances are fine, and we can officially own this place soon.
GTKY: What TV family (can be reality, sitcom, or whatever) would you love to be a member of? I love the Tanners! I actually got to interview Candace, Andrea, and Jodie a couple times for my blog. I also got to go on the set of Fuller House when they filmed the New Kids on the Block episode. You have no idea how many times I went back and forth between the front doors and the kitchen door. I was so giddy. I also sat on the couch. It was a crazy opportunity, there were only a few of us so they just let us go wherever we wanted in the set and it was a dream come true. Then we chatted with the girls in the kitchen. I had them record a video for my daughter and she still loves watching them say hi to her.
@thedomesticgeek oh man, we just got our pre-approval yesterday to start looking at houses (first time home buyers at 31 and 33 b/c of where we live currently being the most expensive area for houses in the country). I'm so curious what makes finances fall through. Any idea what happened? And you're currently renting the house you plan to buy once your old house sells? Hopefully everything goes through quickly this time. That's crazy about Fuller House!
@bblair24 I feel ya on homeschooling. Since DS1 would have started kindergarten but hates even doing FaceTime usually we decided zoom school would probably not work. But it’s definitely hard to adjust to school at home too.
@forevertired I saw a book called “what makes a baby” at Target that was both an educational and more biological but still kid friendly explanation of the process but it also includes things like in vitro and surrogacy. So if you’re looking for just pure educational that might be a good one. It was for like preschool to early elementary ages too. When my five year old asked I simply said daddy had a seed and put it inside mommy and it planted into an egg and then it can grow inside until the baby is strong enough to come out. He was easily satisfied with a simple enough answer and left it there so I didn’t feel the need for a book unless he kept asking questions as he usually hates being read to!
@thedomesticgeek oh my that sounds incredibly frustrating. I hope housing issues resolve quickly and without any further surprises!!!
@kelseyyh yes!!! When DS1 was little there were constantly bites out of all my produce. DS2 once ate right through the plastic covering on a crown of broccoli because he just really wanted it.
How many kids do you already have? Ages? two boys, 5 and 2
How are your other kids doing this week? Mostly good, just being very brotherly so playing rough with each other and laughing until someone gets hurt.
Rants/Raves? Concerns/questions? Eh, I had a long rant on the vent page so I’ll leave it there.
GTKY: What TV family (can be reality, sitcom, or whatever) would you love to be a member of? I like this one! I think I would be a member of the Dunder Mifflin family. I love the constant pranks and shenanigans!
@theletlers ooh good answer with Dunder Mifflin! I didn’t think of that. We are huge Office fans and I would definitely want to work there. I’d be an awful sales person so I’ll just make up my own position like Pam did. 😂
How many kids do you already have? Ages? One son, 23 months
How are your other kids doing this week?
He’s been up a million times.. last night I think I went in 9 times? So I’m exhausted and he’s cranky. The wildfires here (CA) make for terrible air quality so we are stuck inside for another weekend
Rants/Raves? Concerns/questions? just getting tired. I honestly forget I’m pregnant bc everything is out of wack (working from home all of a sudden, can’t see anyone bc of covid, can’t go outside bc of fires, not sleeping). I’m just tired and keep checking in to see if I’m getting anxious or depressed or if this is normal for the crazy world right now
GTKY: What TV family (can be reality, sitcom, or whatever) would you love to be a member of? Just binged all of Schitts Creek so def that family! Love love love the show!
@thedomesticgeek that is SO COOL about your experience with Fuller House!! Also, I hope your financial situation is resolved soon. That's super stressful. We moved earlier this year and I had such big fears about deals falling through and having to pay for a house we weren't occupying anymore. It will hopefully be over soon!
@eahayes that sounds incredibly overwhelming! I bet the stress of fires and poor air quality is affecting your toddler. I really really hope you guys get rain soon and some cooler weather! T&P 💜
@kvh22 The first time the buyers finances fell through because the credit union put the numbers in wrong apparently, so they went to another financing company. Then 48 hours before close they found that the buyer was lying about being on another mortgage so the loan fell through again.
We found new buyers within a few days, but closing isn't until mid-November so waiting for the paperwork and finances to go through again is going to be agonizing.
At least you're not selling a house! Being a first time home buyer is a whole lot easier, good luck finding the perfect home!
@theletlers smoke cleared for today thankfully so we went on a long walk and I made him eat his lunch outside, picnic style lol! Now it's too hot to go out again, but it felt amazing this morning

I like this one! I think I would be a member of the Dunder Mifflin family. I love the constant pranks and shenanigans!

just getting tired.
We found new buyers within a few days, but closing isn't until mid-November so waiting for the paperwork and finances to go through again is going to be agonizing.
At least you're not selling a house! Being a first time home buyer is a whole lot easier, good luck finding the perfect home!
