We used the skip hop whale tub with sling. It was ok. Not bad, not exceptional. We used it until we moved DS into the regular tub. For soaps/shampoo/lotion, we just used a couple of those little samples that come in registry gift bags/from the pediatrician and then picked the one we liked the best. Luckily DS wasn’t allergic to any of them (which is why you shouldn’t buy a big bottle until you know). For washcloths, I actually found some really thin ones at the dollar store and we use those since it’s easier to not get soap in his eyes with those rather than the big thick ones. DS loves this B toys bath set, although it’s for a little bit older kiddos and not infants. It can go in the dishwasher for cleaning which is awesome. Otherwise we have a few cheap dollar store toys that we throw out once a month. Anything that has a little hole that water can get in (like the toys that squirt) should be tossed monthly since they can grow mold.
We just held DS in the shower when he was too little to sit up on his own. I’d hold him and H would wash him, or vice versa. It was easier than using an infant tub and was one less thing we had to have cluttering up our bathroom. I like the Honest baby shampoo, unscented. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072QXWXS6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_lnkDFb5GR7EH9
Besides that, we really only bought two other things: a cradle cap brush and cradle cap shampoo. But don’t buy that stuff until you actually have to, since some babies don’t get cradle cap, or at least not bad enough to actually treat. Anyway, we used these and they worked really well: Safety 1st Cradle Cap Brush and Comb https://www.amazon.com/dp/B011EVXIIE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_FpkDFb3JK9PJH
Oh, and until DS was actually crawling and getting dirty, we only gave him baths maaaaaybe once every other week. Otherwise we’d just do little sponge baths for his face/neck, fat folds, and diaper area. Too many baths really dried out his skin. You might get flack from older ladies who think babies should be washed daily or multiple times per week, but what do they know? It’s been decades since they’ve raised a newborn. 🙄
@moguippy thanks for posting that skip hop tub! I'm looking for something smaller this time around.
@hannahbananas11 yes to the cradle cap brush! my DS had cradle cap in just one spot on the top of his head and the little scrubby/comb was perfect for getting out the flakes. And it was weirdly satisfying for me to see what came off
We had the big, white tub that weighed DS and told the temperature and while it was nice to have, definitely not a necessity and was very bulky to store outside of the tub in our small bathroom when not using it. https://www.amazon.com/Aquascale-3-1-Baby-Bath/dp/B00WGSZ8L0
Also like @hannahbananas11, I didn't wash DS all the time when he was a baby because his skin couldn't take it and would get super dry, even with moisturizing after baths. I do maybe every other night now and he's 3 (unless he eats something with red sauce/has marker/dirt all over him from preschool).
Yes to not washing your baby every day! It’s not necessary unless they have a massive blowout or some other bodily fluid catastrophe! We did maybe 1-3 times a week for the first few months. We would do shower baths occasionally but my DS hated them and whoever was holding the baby usually felt like they would drop him bc they get so slippery with when they are soaped up! (Props to never dropping your kiddo @hannahbananas11😂). Now we do baths 5-6 times a week bc toddler boys are gross, especially in the summer lol. Plus my DS loves them so it’s just part of the bedtime routine now.
Moms of 2+ kids: when did you start combining bath time with the kids? I'm scared that DS would be way too rambunctious to have him share bath time with a newborn, so we'll bathe them separately at the start. But were you able to combine bath times once baby #2 could sit up independently, or did you wait even longer?
I did some baths with DD2 in the baby tub in the big tub (or I had a chair thing) and DD1 in the big tub. The baby tub/chair gave some good separation and the kids loved it.
I think we used aveeno baby wash 🤷🏻♀️
We had some really cute and really soft baby towels THAT I HATED! I think they were like a microfiber or something dumb that didn't absorb well and got really linty so I would end up with a still damp, fuzzy kid. Can't find an example online, but try and choose actual absorbent fabrics
@birdiejo I haven’t actually started shopping but starting to get ideas together and will probably start a registry very soon. Friends are throwing me a virtual shower right before Thanksgiving which is sooner than I realize and now I’m stressed about figuring out what all we need on a registry in time for invites to go out!
@manditchka24 that IS soon!! This is my third so not doing a baby shower but i think I’ve mentioned before I got rid of all our stuff so I’ve been having fun finding all the items I want but might not actually need. 😆
@WildMagelet that thing looks super cozy but where do you store it? Does it hang in the shower so it can drip dry? I’ve never understood the logistics of it ! Hah!
We use bath sponges rather than a baby tub. It worked well as a newborn to sit on the counter for sponge baths, and then into the sink or bathtub. Definitely a space saver and wrings out easily. Also cheap to replace if you feel the need. We have one at home and one at each Grandparent's house.
@manditchka24 yikes that shower is coming up fast! Some of my favorite things we received were off registry from recent new parents so that's always an option for people too
Some favorites - indestructible books - fruit shaped silicone baby teethers - a sun hat (but maybe not for February 😂) - Mustela No rinse cleansing water - Muslin blanket - stretchy nursing/car seat cover - mirror with pivoting adjustability (not just straps) - teething mit that velcros to hand - don't forget toddler food stuff!
I like it and it made it easy to do combo baths pretty early on. Also it’s not expensive. If you have a boy I for sure recommend keeping a warm wet wash cloth on his chest and privates so you don’t get peed on and they don’t get too cold.
I like Baby Magic and my kids weren’t allergic. Travel or trial sized helps you avoid the huge bottle and your kid breaks out like everyone said above.
We don’t do squirt toys in the bath tub. They have cups, a set of monster trucks from B Toys that were for the beach, boats and a big hit here—glow sticks. Obviously newborns don’t care but my second loved them around 6-8 months.
My second also screamed in the bath tub every.single.time until 6-8 months. Like you were bathing him in acid screamed. 😣🥴 So baths became like once every 3 weeks because neither of us could stand it. He’s back to hating baths the past several months too. He can talk now and doesn’t want his face or hair wet. Anyway. If your kid hates baths and showers and water in general, you are not alone. My oldest would take two hour baths just because he loves them by 12-18 months. 🤣🤷🏻♀️
We were given a baby bath and it never moved from the garage. We used the bathroom sink with a towel in it when he was tiny, or we would throw him in the bath with me or shower with dad. Once he was sitting and more mobile we put a small laundry basket in the bathtub and he sat in that (just flipped it over when we were done to dry and Still use it to take laundry to the laundry room). Once he was starting to crawl out of that we just went straight to the tub.
Agree with not washing them much when they are tiny, little guy ended up with some mild dry skin and we were told to ditch the baby stuff and use a good quality non scented soap and lotion for sensitive skin so we used cetaphil.
I absolutely loved the Puj infant bathtub. It sticks flat to the wall when you are done with it. It is pricey but someone bought it for us and I let my friends use it during the newborn stage.
Once he got bigger we used the Boon tub. It is super versatile and it is all easy to clean. I had friends that used the mesh sling tubs and had mold issues.

We used the Baby Dove Tip to Toe Sensitive wash

We tried the Honest company shampoo and the Aveeno one first, but they didn't react well with my son's skin. I second not buying huge sizes of things in case your baby's skin doesn't like it!
We also got thinner, cheaper wash cloths that were easier to get into folds/use on the face. Also seconding the cheap bath toys/bags to keep them in. We regularly buy this one:
https://www.amazon.com/Organizer-SUNDOKI-Storage-Suction-Toddlers/dp/B07FSNYD5S/ref=sr_1_22?dchild=1&keywords=bath+toy+bag&qid=1601481982&s=baby-products&sr=1-22
Because it comes with two bags in it and when one starts getting gross, we toss it and replace with the other. So much easier than soaking it and scrubbing it.

ETA- This tub mat has been great from the time DS was able to independently sit up in the tub until now. It fit my longer tub and hangs on the showerhead when not in use.
