Is the grilled cheese just cheese? If so, (UO, apparently), using American cheese. Real cheeses usually don't have the same melted consistency, which is what I like about a plain ol' grilled cheese. Cheddar in particular, while I love the flavor, doesn't quite liquify enough for me.

If adding in other things (i.e. caramelized onions, jams, etc) then it'd be a real cheese, exact flavor depends a bit on the add-in.

I’m with @akoros on this one. We don’t ever buy American/fake cheese. So every time I make a grilled cheese I’m just disappointed. The real cheese doesn’t get the same consistency, and it always makes the bread feel dry. 😬 grilled cheese is the only thing I’d use American for though.

As a WI girl (from WI lives in MN) 100% real cheese! I actually prefer Crystal Farms. I don't think I have ever bought Kraft singles.

Friends, the trick to an AMAZING grilled cheese (no matter the cheese you use, although you should always use REAL cheese) is to use mayo on the outside of your bread instead of using butter. Mayo has a higher threshold for heat thus allowing the cheese to properly melt without the bread burning or drying out!

I'm sorry but for a grilled cheese sandwich It has to be the Kraft singles processed cheese. It melts better Lol Ours is Canadian cheese so it's taste so good 😆 Everything else though I use real cheese for.

@kpearse99 yesss girl. Agreed! My husband and I only use mayo on the outside of the bread instead of butter. Tastes way better.

@kpearse99 Cooper Sharp is definitely the best! I buy the Kraft singles, but mostly because it takes me ages to use it up and any real cheese would go moldy

I'm in the minority on this one but I am going with the Kraft singles. I know it's processed fake-ness but I love every bite and I'm not ashamed! *heavy breathing thinking of Kraft singles*

98% of the time I need it to be real cheese, but there’s something about processed American “cheese” that brings me back to my childhood lol! Definitely a guilty pleasure once in a blue moon.

@fitzfizz I'm guessing "Canadian cheese" vs. "American cheese" is like Mexican Coke vs. regular U.S. Coke, somehow it just tastes better

I do kind of enjoy that Kraft changed their mac & cheese formula to remove some chemicals/preservatives and didn't tell people for the first month so people wouldn't complain that it tasted different (no one noticed)

I am reviving this because I was only lurking when this was posted but I’m very confused. People buy Sargento cheese regularly? You don’t go to the deli counter to get cheese?

I don’t buy kraft singles, we get American cheese from the deli and that is the only correct way to make a grilled cheese haha.

But we do the same for any kind of sliced cheese - cheddar, provolone, etc. I think it is SO much better than the Sargento/prepackaged kind. Is that a UO?

@bows22 I definitely have a preference for going to the deli to get my sliced meats and cheeses which is why I didn't comment on this one. I've never had Sargento cheese and think all prepackaged cheese doesn't taste as good as cheese from the deli.
