Mentioned on other threads, but I had my second appointment this morning! EDD moved up a few days to April 4. We had another transvaginal ultrasound and we could actually see a lot today. I'm 9 weeks, 1 day and the baby looked like a little gingerbread man haha. Could visibly see little arm and leg nubs and could really see the heartbeat clearly! Heartbeat was 170 and the OB said everything looked perfect and healthy!! Was very happy to hear that. ETA: Despite FIL's psychic reading, there was only one baby. OB got a good laugh about the psychic thing.

My first appointment was in the same health system but a different office/different doctor. I felt like the office itself was outdated and crappy which weirded me out and the doctor was really friendly, but she seemed like she was in a rush and just glazed over everything really quickly. I'm a HUGE planner, I care about every detail, and I was expecting to talk WAY more to the doctor at our first appointment. I decided to look for a different office for my next appointment and today was SO much better. The office was new and beautiful, every staff member was very friendly, and the doctor was GREAT. She took the time to answer ALL of my questions and she was very knowledgable and gave super informative answers to all of my questions. I feel so much better about this OB.

I learned that currently doulas are not allowed in the hospital for labor/delivery, but she said this could change by April 2021. She said she would not expect any of the covid policies to change at all in 2020 but 2021 was a different story. She also indulged all of my other questions about the roles of residents/students at the hospital during labor/delivery, how early they will induce or late they will let a mother go until they require inducing labor, questions about other doctors in the practice/rotations/who will be there on the day of labor, etc., procedure for calling and asking questions throughout pregnancy, the level of specialists/NICU care at the hospital, banking cord blood, etc. I wasn't kidding when I said I had a lot of questions lol but she was very patient.

Our next appointment is an intake phone or zoom appointment next week to just go over more health history kind of stuff. Then next in person appointment is 9/23 where we will apparently hear the heartbeat and do bloodwork.

  • @theblondebump oh wow, you were very prepared with questions. I am kind of a planner but had no friends who had babies yet (even though I was 26 when I got pregnant with DD1) so a lot of "I didn't know what I didn't know." You asked some great questions!

  • @kvh22 I'm definitely very nervous about labor/delivery and I feel like the more information I have ahead of time and the less "surprises" closer to giving birth, the better I will be at managing the stress and anxiety.

For example, I asked about the students/residents because I know it's a teaching hospital. I told the OB that my concerns were 2 fold - 1, I specifically chose a practice where the doctors are all female and though I don't particularly care if males are observing during my labor, my preference would be for the doctors actually touching me to be female, and 2, I already feel a lot of anxiety about giving birth and don't want the added anxiety of someone "learning" on me. (One of my close friends gave birth 6 weeks ago and due to some minor complications, she had a particular procedure performed during her labor. It was a resident who performed the procedure and my friend was told that it was the resident's first time performing the procedure ever but that the attending physician was right there supervising. Even though the attending physician was right there, she said she could feel that the resident was really nervous and it was very unsettling to have someone performing something for the first time during your labor! I would totally feel the same way!)

She was super understanding and chatted it through with me about how it's definitely possible to request as little interaction with the residents as possible, BUT she wanted me to understand that there are attending physicians who are male at the hospital (of course) and so especially in the case of an emergency, or until one of my doctors arrived at the hospital, it was definitely possible that I'd have a male doctor at the hospital. I really appreciated her explaining that because at least I know that now and have 7 months to get used to the idea, rather than that just being sprung on me the day I go into labor! Obviously number one priority is always healthy baby so of course I can handle a male doctor if I need to, but when given the choice, my preference is a woman, so it's just nice to know these things ahead of time and talk them through.

(Sorry for the long winded response!!!)

@theblondebump you are doing such a great job of being prepared, momma, way to go!! Major kuddos for finding a place AND doctor you’re comfortable with - that’s so important! I’ve always felt like besides the doc, it’s really important to like to office and office staff and nurses because you end up being there a lot!

And I’ll throw in my 2 cents about learning/teaching residents: during my first pregnancy my BFF was a resident (not where I was delivering) so I was all “yea I’m totally okay with residents during my delivery.” Uhm NO haha. A resident assisted the doc who delivered my baby (not MY OB btw, she wasn’t on call that day 🙄 - I’ve since switched practiced for #2&3, that’s another story), but anyway, resident assisted with stitching me up (minor tear but needed a stitch or two) and she jacked something up and there was a whole convo between her and doc (literally as I was laying there & holding my newborn) and then doc took back over and in retrospect I was like OH HECK NO WILL I EVER BE A TEACHING EXPERIENCE AGAIN. And the long story short is: because the stitches were a little jacked up, I ended up with a bit of painful scar tissue that had to be burned off by my OB 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ So now I decline the residents touching me. I let one watch for #3 but it was for sure watch only. (Edit for spelling!)
  • OMG @goldpolkadot - adding this to mental list of why I do NOT want any residents performing ANYTHING on me - thank you for sharing! The OB seemed to say that that would be totally respected unless I was having an emergency and they were short staffed and okay, if I'm having an emergency I'll settle for a resident haha.

And thank you so much for your kind words! Very easy to second guess myself right now! <3
  • No appointments for me besides my biweekly blood draws ladies, but I wanted to toss in a resident story from 1993.

My friend is an identical twin & her Mom had a C section. They asked her if they could have a few students in to observe. Apparently the whole experience was like a giant lesson as the lead physician narrated everything 😂. Her Mom loved it but omg no no no.... 😳. At least for me lol.

  • @goldpolkadot oh my gosh, not cool! That sounds so awful 😖 You guys are making me wonder if this is a possible scenario for our birth. Almost every doctor I’ve been to here has had a student with them at least once - there’s a college just a few miles from us that is part of our bigger hospital system. I don’t know which hospital my OB will have me deliver at, but if it’s the big one I guess there’s a good chance of it being a med student lesson 😳 I haven’t minded them coming in to other appointments - there was one when I had my IUD removed a few years ago, our pediatrician often has a student with her, my GI doc has had one before, and DD1’s eye doctor had one with him last time. But I might have to say no thanks to them helping deliver my baby!
  • @bblair24 ya I totally get it - our awesome hospital is a “teaching hospital” so lots of residents. BUT just remember you can always decline that they get to do anything to you but can approve that they can still can be there to learn 😂 Seemed like an okay middle to me!
  • @goldpolkadot definitely! We’ve been watching ER lately and a big part of that show is the med students. They’re always like “I’ve never done (this complicated procedure) before” and the doctors are like “no better time than the present!” Umm I disagree if I happen to be the one present at that point in time 😂
  • hahah exactly @bblair24 ! Please don't use my vagina as a learning experience, thanks!
  • Yay for a healthy US and strong heartbeat! @cagncoo12 I also got emotional seeing the heartbeat for the first time! :)
  • Congrats on a healthy US! @rexnie

  • @cagncoo12 and @rexnie I’m glad you both had good appointments today! So sweet being able to see them before you can feel them ❤️
  • @rexnie so glad there was heart activity, that must be a huge relief!

    Thanks all!
  • @cagncoo12 & @rexnie yay! Congrats on great U/S today, ladies!!
  • No appts for me this week, as I’m halfway done with my 2 week wait for my next appt at 8w.

I just wanted to add to y’all’s conversation about thoughts on residents and students. I don’t typically think much of that, as I’ve always been a patient at one of the biggest teaching hospitals in the country, so it seems “normal” to me to have someone in the room that’s learning. However, my first OB, almost 15 years ago was a resident. I picked him, as my sis was an L&D nurse and she just loved him. He was amazing and I chose to follow him once he completed his residency to a hospital 45 mins away 9 years ago. I, still, use him today, 15 years later, and now an hour drive from me!! I adore this man & it’s funny to think that I met him during his residency!! I had an MC in May & he was so great. I had my first appt w/him last Friday & seeing him is the highlight of my week!! He’s like catching up with an old friend, but still takes the best care of his patients, and has amazing bedside manner!!

@shantx that’s awesome that you’ve grown such a good relationship with him! Also cool that you had your sister as an insider to tell you how great he was.

I had a great relationship with my previous OB too. I moved away and then she did. My mom (who lives about 30 minutes from me) found an article on her in their newspaper because she was at a new practice in their area! I’ve actually considered finding her (if I don’t love the practice I’m going to for my first appointment in a couple weeks). She delivered DD1, she was there in the room during my US for my MC, and she just made it in time to deliver DD2. She was amazing and caring and shared her own MC story with me as she comforted me right after mine. A good doctor makes all the difference. ❤️
  • Appointment on 9/1 when I was about 7.5 weeks. I was expecting an ultrasound, as that is what happened at my first appointment with my previous two pregnancies. However, the OB I met with said she likes to wait until after 8 weeks for a scan.

So while she did not confirm pregnancy, she did answer all my questions. Plus, I go back on September 8 for my ultrasound.
