What is your favorite ice cream flavor?

Re: GTKY 8/27

  • Cookies & cream!

  • Mint Chocolate Chip!!
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • It's a toss-up between pistachio and cookie dough!
  • I'm with @mamabee1113 - I love mint chocolate chip! My normal go-to is vanilla and chocolate twist soft serve with rainbow sprinkles, but apparently you're not supposed to eat soft serve ice cream when pregnant because the machines can have listeria or something? Just one of my excuses to have ice cream in the freezer at home :)

  • @theblondebump wut?! That is for sure one pregnancy recommendation that I will NOT be following!!
  • @juliebird6 hahaha I know, it seems a little overboard, but I dno. Pre-pregnancy I really liked beef jerky as a easy on the go snack, but then I read that you shouldn't have any dried or cured meats during pregnancy so I cut out beef jerky. But lately I've had such a meat aversion and not getting much protein and I saw a bag of beef jerky in my pantry and it actually sounded good to me (which very little does these days!), so I was like what the hell, I'm eating it. Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do!
  • Can I like them all 😂? I love stuff with cookie & brownie chunks. Sometimes I get funky and get bubblegum or cotton candy. Sometimes oreo. We can’t keep ice cream in our house due to my love of it 🤪. I just buy it when I want it so I don’t live out of the cartons.

  • I'm generally an ice cream fiend. My favorite is super premium vanilla with pb cups smashed into it. But I also love the cookie butter ice cream from TJs.
  • Mint chocolate chip! It has to be the green kind.
  • I ate ice cream for lunch yesterday... and it was amazing. Favorites are either vanilla with peanut butter cups or Mint Chocolate Chip. I LOVE ICE CREAM.
  • @cagncoo12 ice cream preference twinsies!
  • Moose tracks! Even better if it's vanilla ice cream.

  • Oh and for soft serve, my OB is on the conservative side and when I asked about froyo she said that if it's from a reputable place it should be fine. It's the gas station type sketchy places you want to avoid. A nice place that exclusively does ice cream or frozen yogurt should be cleaning regularly.

With stuff like this, it helps me to remember that you are much more likely to get listeria from salad greens than anything else that's on the list of foods to avoid for listeria risk (hummus, soft serve, etc.) - and salad greens are not on that list b/c they're good for you. The prenatal nutritionists I follow (both are very legit - Lily Nichols and Ryann Kipping) recommend jerky as a snack but to find a good one without MSG.

My OB says no soft cheeses, even pasteurized, unless heated through. So even though I've seen this logic (listeria more common in lettuce than cheese), I still got super nervous after having brie on a burger (and asking the restaurant to heat it extra long and confirm it's pasteurized) last pregnancy so you have to also balance your risk tolerance/mental health. I personally put goat cheese and prosciutto on pizza and don't worry about it but we cook it at home so I know it's heated through. So basically, do your research, asses your risk tolerance, and proceed how you feel best, I think the raw egg thing isn't even for listeria, it's just getting salmonella since our immune systems are compromised so you're more likely to get food poisoning.

  • Thanks for all the info on foods to avoid ladies! I honestly wasn’t aware of some of this (though I don’t eat meat so that saves me some problem areas). I remember swapping to vegan mayo & reminding myself not to eat cookie dough 😂. I’ll have to talk to my doctor about all this obviously.

  • Ben & Jerry's dairy free milk and cookies
  • Wow, this is my 4th pregnancy and I have legit never heard of the froyo thing!!

I usually only go to a local creamery because it's just soooo good and my fav is the belgian cookie butter. Oh man... I may need to go tomorrow.
  • @runsoncoffee This thread has made me crave ice cream all day 😂

  • @runsoncoffee I’ve never heard of the soft serve thing either!!! Crazy!!

Yall will discover...I run on the wild side during pregnancy and often eat the things one shouldn’t 😬😁

My current fav is haagen-dazs Vanilla Swiss Almond. Always love me a good cookie dough, especially Ben & Jerrys. Their Tonight Dough is a top fav too. I used to love mint choc chip as a kid - haven’t had it in ages but it now sounds delish!!
  • @goldpolkadot I sit with you...I totally eat lunch meat, pretty rare steaks, might even drink a glass of wine at some point (gasp!!), relatively guilt free. Gotta do whatever you're comfortable with, and apparently for me, that's quite a bit LOL
  • I haven’t totally given up lunch meat for any of my pregnancies either 😬 I tend to feel crash-y when I’m pregnant because I struggle to eat right in the beginning and when that starts I just go for the quickest protein. Lunch meat is easy! Also if the concern is listeria and the rest of my family eats it almost daily, wouldn’t they be sick too? 🤷🏻‍♀️
  • @bblair24 the thing with all of these food poising risks (and colds, flu, etc.) is that b/c our immune system is compromised, we're more likely to get sick from it. I think something like half the documented cases of listeria poisoning a year are in pregnant women for that reason. Listeria crosses the placenta, too. BUT, like I said above, salad greens are the most common source and they don't recommend not to eat them. So it's all about using your best judgement and what you're comfortable with. I'll put deli meat in a sandwich and then heat it on the stove or panini press (like a grilled cheese with turkey).

  • @goldpolkadot I, as well, eat mostly all the things...
  • Totally agree with what everyone's saying that you have to do whatever you feel comfortable with and everyone has their own level of risk they feel comfortable with! Just sharing these random tidbits I've learned because I had never heard some of them (like soft serve) until I was pregnant! Although the risk of getting listeria from any of these things is really small, if you get listeria when pregnant it can cause miscarriage, stillbirth or serious health problems for the baby, so I'm just sticking to my hard ice cream for now, just to be safe! :)

(sorry in advance if I sound like the fun police lol I'm totally NOT judging anyone's else decisions!! to each her own!)
  • @theblondebump I follow most of the listeria concern restrictions, too, but will probably forray into sushi and soft egg yolks which I avoided in my prior pregnancies. Our sushi places are legit and if we move, I'll miss them (I live in the west coast). I'd just make sure they're flash frozen which they should be. I'm honestly not a big soft serve fan and our froyo place closed so that's now a non-issue. DD1 was an August baby so the go ahead from my conservative OB on froyo was life-changing!

  • @kvh22  ahhh eggs are another one. I didn't even think about whether I was allowed to eat eggs in the first two weeks of pregnancy and for weeks 4-6, I was actually feeling great, no symptoms at all. I was eating eggs on the regular and I only like eggs poached or sunny side up, so that's what I was eating. Then I realized I was only supposed to be eating fully cooked yolks, whoops! Nowadays I can't even stomach eggs anyway, so it's irrelevant, haha. I'm really looking forward to the second trimester when I hopefully have more of an appetite back.

My husband just asked me if I could eat chinese food for dinner lol. I feel like plenty of people do, but I bet they all use MSG even if they say they don't. Is that terrible to eat during pregnancy? I told him not tonight anyway since you guys got me in the mood for Chick fil a and I had that for lunch :) But lo mein noodles do sound delicious.
  • @kvh22 Vegetarian sushi is awesome too if the meat isn’t done in a way you’re comfortable with. Man, life seems easier as a vegetarian in terms of pregnancy foods lol. Sushi was my pre-labour meal lol (since I was induced, I had time to set this up 😂).

@theblondebump My sister was tipped off about my pregnancy with DS because of eggs 😂. I looove a runny yolk. My parents knew first & at a family brunch my Dad awkwardly confirmed with me “you want this cooked through right”? 🤪. I was announcing that day to everyone else so it was kind of fun for that randomly to send her questioning.

  • omg I can't choose... coffee ice cream with heath bar probably, but I'm a huge ice cream fan
  • @theblondebump oops, eating beef jerky right now! I agree, sometimes its a lesser of two evils type of situation
  • Yep, I caved on the beef jerky too @eahayes
  • I snacked on beef jerky earlier too 😬
