Breastfeeding Mom Check In August

Hey Mamas!

Quite a few of us have mentioned that we currently breastfeed, yay! I thought I’d start this end of month check in. If we want to keep sharing, we could do monthly threads or more, and if we don’t feel like it, we can just leave it lol.

If you’re reading this & aren’t nursing, but have questions about it, maybe put them here for now? I’m sure everyone has thoughts to share.

I am not sure what prompts are the best to get the conversation rolling but I will try. Say whatever you want lol 😉.

How long have you been nursing your current nurser? How long in total with all your kiddos?

How has nursing while pregnant been so far? Have you nursed while pregnant before?

What was the most surprising thing you have learned about / while nursing?

Rants/raves/questions/advice?

If you desire, you can share your nursing journey :). I know some people like to.

  • How long have you been nursing your current nurser? How long in total with all your kiddos?
Only child, we’ve been nursing for 20 months.

How has nursing while pregnant been so far? Have you nursed while pregnant before?
So far, so good. We tend to nurse sitting up & I do find during a longer session it is a bit irritating on my stomach.

TW I nursed during my second pregnancy, which ended in loss. DS was super sick for a week during that pregnancy and it was a bit much for me, as he wanted to nurse constantly. Being just over a year, he was mostly nursing compared to how much solid food he eats now.

What was the most surprising thing you have learned about / while nursing?
That milk can shoot out of multiple spots on the nipple 😂. Seriously I was so shook by this discovery lol.

    Rants/raves/questions/advice?
I bought 2 picture books that talk about weaning. I’m going to add those to shelf and see if they give DS any inspiration aha. I don’t want to push weaning on him, but I also am sort of hoping to be done by 2. I also don’t desire to tandem nurse when he’s 2 years, 4 months aha.

  • How long have you been nursing your current nurser? How long in total with all your kiddos? 15 months for DD2, 16 months for DD1, 31 months total

How has nursing while pregnant been so far? Have you nursed while pregnant before? It's been fine but aversions are coming, I'm sure. I got really uncomfortable sometimes with DD1 while I was pregnant.

What was the most surprising thing you have learned about / while nursing? Here's a fun one (not to scare you all before most of us have had our first U/S) but you are 9x more likely to conceive twins if you get pregnant while breastfeeding.

Rants/raves/questions/advice? Unless you have a high risk pregnancy or some other condition, don't listen to someone who tells you it's not safe to BF while pregnant. Do your own research/get a second opinion if it's a doctor. Also, my milk dried up at 20ish weeks last time and DD1 was just like "bye" so I'm curious how DD2 will do (expecting the same thing to happen in terms of drying up this time).

  • @kvh22 You are full of information! I had no idea about the twin thing lol. I’d be totally game for that, as hard as the first few years would be 🤪. But I am going in just hoping to hear that heartbeat & know that my little baby is growing well. More than one baby would be icing on the cake.

I have some friends whose kids just powered through nursing while they were pregnant. My mom said I totally lost interest at a pretty young age, she was pregnant with my brother when I was 6 months.

  • @kvh22 that is terrifying information!

How long have you been nursing your current nurser? How long in total with all your kiddos? Current nurser 20 months. I’ve been nursing basically since 2013. Think I had a few months off in 2016 and a few off in 2018.

How has nursing while pregnant been so far? Have you nursed while pregnant before?
Yes I have nurses while pregnant with my son and my youngest daughter. It hasn’t been bad but I imagine will start to dry up at some point.

What was the most surprising thing you have learned about / while nursing?
That it can be different with each baby! I Had just enough milk to squeak by with my first but have had such a better supply with my second and third. Cluster feeding really does work and bring in the best supply.

Rants/raves/questions/advice? I am now officially freaked about twins since this while breastfeeding thing and being older.

  • @pelorunningmama The supply thing is interesting! Why are our bodies so different!

I had an oversupply for quite awhile & am sort of hoping it won’t be that way this time. I just hope nursing is just easier this time around. The first few weeks with DS were honestly a mess with nursing. We pumped for a bit after being back in the hospital due to him not gaining weight & I felt like nursing wasn’t going to happen. (Curious if pumping led to the oversupply actually). And now here we are at 20 months 🥰🤪.

  • @kvh22 @pelorunningmama well crap. I'm totally freaked out about that twin info too. I cannot have twins.
@kelseyyh I remember with my first I was totally fascinated by the amount of milk shooting out from everywhere. I said it looked like a maze of laser beams haha!!

How long have you been nursing your current nurser? How long in total with all your kiddos? I'm currently tandem nursing so DS2 it's been 2.5 years and DS3 just about 14 months... total is 4 years (straight... haven't had a day of not nursing since my oldest was born lol). I tandem nursed my older two as well and my oldest weaned while I was pregnant with my third due to the dwindling milk supply.

How has nursing while pregnant been so far? Have you nursed while pregnant before? So far so good, but I'm still super early. I've nursed while pregnant twice before and usually around the 6-8 week mark it gets extremely painful for me and lasts a few weeks. I also usually mostly dry up around 20 weeks and my kids just dry nurse/get droplets until the new babe is born.

What was the most surprising thing you have learned about / while nursing? I never saw myself being a crazy breastfeeding lady and never intended to tandem nurse. But here we are... it's pretty amazing to me what the body can do!

Rants/raves/questions/advice? If anyone is interested in tandem nursing I'm happy to share my experience!

  • @pelorunningmama right! Completely terrifying! I was blissfully unaware of this until after my first u/s with DD2. My morning sickness hit earlier and is BAD this time so I'm a bit concerned and figured I'd pull you all in lol.

Your supply gets better with each kid apparently. Something about new milk ducts or something. I forget exactly why. I always had an oversupply so I block fed both girls.

Oh AND!!! I had ZERO pain when DD2 was born when she was breastfeeding even though I hadn't BFed in 4+ months! It wasn't horrible with DD1 but I definitely was like "all those ppl saying you're doing it wrong if it hurts are full of crap." I was doing it right and block feeding. It just hurts until your body gets used to it.

  • @runsoncoffee I’ll remember to ask you about it if it seems like we are going to end up tandem nursing ❤️.

I agree about expectations vs reality! I was so shocked about how “long” my sister was nursing her first, and now I’ve nursed my first longer 🤪. Not a competition or anything, just a funny realization! While I want to be done by two, I also thought I’d be done by one... 😂. I really want DS to be okay with stopping when it happens.

  • @kvh22 I literally had that same thing typed up about milk ducts increasing with each pregnancy and then deleted it because couldn't remember if I had the words right haha! I am team block feeding as well, works great for me!
