Product spotlight: Baby apparel 6/9

We are super behind on our product spotlight, so I figured I'd start the next item on the list. Feel free to request or start other topics as we might not get through them all at this rate!

What are your must have baby clothing items?

Re: Product spotlight: Baby apparel 6/9

  • My daughter spent most of the first 6 mo in zip up PJs, especially once it got cold. Since it will already be cold by the time this baby gets here, I plan for mostly fleece zip up PJs and long sleeve items. I am also a big fan of the halo swaddles sleep sacks for nighttime but also discovered the Ollie swaddle that my DD seemed to like more. She liked being wrapped really tight!

  • For sure zip footies! Don't bother with button/snap ones, such a waste of time haha. We loved SwaddleMe swaddles. My oldest was born at the end of October and I loved the Ugg Bixbee booties to keep his little feet warm when we went out- they are the only things I could get to stay on his feet!
  • Halo sleep sacks for bedtime! They’re safe for sleep and help keep the kiddo warm. Not necessarily clothes, but they make car seat covers that zip closed for when you take the car outside. Make sure it only goes over the exterior like a blanket would, not under baby or the straps.
  • Oh yes @coldbrew! Car seat cover was so clutch for daily daycare drop off/pick up for me. Definitely highly recommend as well.
  • I loooooved dressing my baby in “people clothes” as I called them. 😂 It was somehow so funny to me to see this tiny being in his little jeans (cotton not denim) and sweatshirt. We’ll see if that happens with the second or if he lives in jammies.

The one thing in favor of button jammies—if baby has to spend any extra time in the hospital but is allowed clothes, zippie jammies may not work. My nephew had to wear button up jammies so that the cords and wires had a place to go. Obviously hope that’s not necessary for anyone!

We, after trial and error with swaddles of all kinds, used the Love2Dream swaddles. My kid was an escape artist and could bust out of ANYTHING to get his hands by his face. The L2D let him have his hands up there while keeping him feeling swaddled and secure.
  • zippers. zippers. only zippers! I am literally getting rid of anything snaps unless they are kimono style. the kimono shirts (not onesies) might be helpful in the first few days before the cord fall off (EW). however my first was born in July during a heat wave with no AC so he lived in diapers and tank tops. My suggestion is, unless you have a large family and lots of social events, skip the cute outfits and separates for the first couple of months. Onesies and footie pajamas are probably more practical! I have a few cute outfits for my boy but didn't really get out much the first few weeks, plus as cute as they are little shorts and button shirts are seriously non practical for a newborn. Once they are 4 months or so I think you can have more fun dressing them up.

We will have a Snoo so it comes with its own swaddles, however I had a large variety since I sometimes used the Snoo without the motion as a normal bassinet. I love the Halo too but the velcro is super noisy and can wake baby up if you're trying to keep them half asleep during feeds. I am so tempted to buy a set of Ollie but since they are $$ I will probably hold off and see how she does in the first week. Some babies just HATE being swaddled. I can always order online quickly if needed. Again different experience this time since DS was a summer baby so honestly sometimes he would sleep in a diaper+swaddle.

  • This is not a rec or a question but I CAN’T WAIT to put my boys in matching Christmas jammies!!!!!! As soon as Carter’s releases their fall/winter clothing, bye-bye bank account, hello matching little men!!!
  • @baseballismyfavoriteseason I’ve been finding matching sets already.  I got some really cute ones on Christmas clearance last week from pottery barn kids.  Amazon also has lots of matching sets from Burts bees online right now.
  • I already have a matching set from Hannah Anderson 🙈🙈🙈

100% agree with everyone that the easiest and best thing is to just plan on full body sleepers or onesies the first several months aside from special occasions.

That said, baby jeans are adorable. And my favorite thing is baby overalls. I need to make sure I have a pair in every size this time. 😆

ETA: I'm going to jump on the matching pajamas/outfits train too. When I was pregnant with DS I didn't get it at all. Now that I'm having another I love the idea.
  • I’ve purchased things from this company before but the swaddles are new to me and I like that you can open the bottom to change a diaper instead of completely unswaddling the baby.  I’m excited to check these out!  I ordered 2. Watch the video on the page it shows how it works.
  • Don’t be like me and listen to your MIL who insisted I return anything size newborn because all the babies in that family were born huge and big headed. (Terrified me to give birth!) DD was born at 5lbs 5oz and all 0-3 month clothes were huge on her. My mom was great and bought her a bunch of onesies and socks so she’d have clothes the first months until she fill in. So buy both size so you don’t end up like me.

I’m wondering how hot or cold it will be here in October. We were still in tank tops in late October last year. So I’m probably doing onesies with things I can layer on if we need to leave the house and it’s cold.

Now I’m shopping for matching Christmas outfits since y’all mentioned it. I can’t believe there will be two little ones this year!
  • @babycakesday 100% agree. I was told by the OB my DS would be big. He came at 7lb 6oz (despite measuring 8lb 2oz on an ultrasound a week to the day before he was born). I hadn't bought any NB clothes but luckily had been gifted a few second hand. We had about 5 onesies that he just rotated through the first few weeks until he wasn't totally swimming in 0-3. (At which point we had so many there were some he didn't even wear I'm pretty sure)

One of them was a 'My 1st Valentine's Day' onesies. He was born in August.

I would say don't go overboard with NB and if you buy new, don't take the tags off right away, but it's good to have.
  • @babycakesday @wineren Agree! My siblings and I were all in the 8lb range, my (6’5”, 300+ lb) husband and his sisters were all 8-9 lbs, and my SIL kids were all 8-9 lbs, so I was the genius saying “eh, we won’t need any size NB.” We had NOTHING in that size. Then our son was born 3 weeks early at 6lb 14oz...... My parents stopped at Carter’s on their way to see us at the hospital and some friends who came to see us texted us beforehand asking if we needed anything, so we were able to clothe our babe. 😂 I am hoping this one is on his brother’s scale so that he can wear some of those adorable tiny things. 🥰
  • @baseballismyfavoriteseason I pulled a lot of DD newborn clothes and I forgot how tiny they are. I’m so excited to see this baby wear them. Not to mention, I cannot believe I ever had a baby small enough to fit them.

  • @babycakesday
I forget, do you know if it's boy /girl?

I knew my DS would be small but I still didn't think he would be in NB clothes for like 2 months+ lol. He was 6.5 lbs. I would say for sure just have maybe 6-7 onesies ready in NB size, just so it's one per day and you can always buy more when baby arrives, these days shipping is pretty fast. If you happen to have more, I agree that the tags can stay on. You can always do a quick load of laundry when baby arrives.
  • I have been getting a lot of baby clothes second hand and I have a whole bunch of onesies and pajamas in the different sizes. I’ve only bought or kept a few newborn things because I know they don’t wear them long, and DH was a 9 pound baby so I’m going to estimate baby boy is going to be huge too, especially since he keeps measuring a couple days ahead 😳 We have a baby/kids consignment shop right down the street from my house and I’m loving going there!
  • @morethanamama Another girl! So I’m going to try and reuse everything I can. The biggest issue they’re born in different seasons. So I have a feeling a lot of the winter things I’ll have to buy in the right size. The great news is that it’s basically summer here 8 months of out the year so those clothes will work.

@mamahosch 9lbs!! I can’t even imagine it. IM crossing my fingers this one hits 6lbs. Just a slightly bigger baby would be less terrifying to hold.
  • All of my babies wore NB clothes for a while and they were 7lb 11oz and up! My biggest was 8lb 13oz and he still wore NB clothes for at least a couple of weeks. For sure at least a pack of NB onesies would be good to stash!
  • Yes definitely, enough to go through a week without doing laundry at least!
@babycakesday luckily I am in California so I don't have to worry about heavy clothing BUT my DS was born in a heat wave with no AC in our house! So even though it's a girl this time I can't really use a lot of his stuff regardless of weight...he lived in a diaper and kimono shirts and then tanktop onesies once the cord fell off! Literally did not wear a long sleeve until Halloween 0: he was born in July! Luckily since he was tiny most of those long sleeves are actually NB or 0-3. I have some neutral hand me downs and of course will buy her a pack of fun NB onesies just because!  I hear you on weight. This one is measuring between 50-60% whereas my son was in the 40ish percentile and then even smaller as time went by. But as we know, measurings can be off...I so agree on a slightly bigger baby being easier to hold!
  • @babycakesday I KNOW! I keep thinking, his poor mother! If she was still alive I’d ask her how she managed!!

@themoonandme hmm good to know! Maybe I’ll try to find a few more newborn onesies or pajamas just to have in case!

DS wore newborn size clothing for two weeks.  He was a bigger baby at 8 lb 8 oz.  I also had a lot of newborn size clothing that was too small for him to ever wear.  I recommend not wasting too much money on newborn clothing especially if you are likely to have a bigger baby.  Big babies run in my family plus DS was always measuring in the 90+% on ultrasound.

Has anyone tried the magnet me sleepers? I was intrigued by them but didn't try them  with my little guy.
  • Has anyone tried Rent a Romper? I just learned about it at the Virtual Prego Expo and it looks awesome - monthly baby clothing rentals that you can customize for what you need. I especially love the idea of, for example, renting a tiny coat for a trip to colder climes when you know you're only going to use it a few days then retire it forever.
