Product spotlight: Misc. Nursery Furniture

This is a place for FTMs to ask questions about, S+TMs to share their prior experience with, and everyone to share what they're eyeing in the world of maternity, baby and postpartum products. Each week we'll spotlight a new category of product to help streamline and make it easier to refer back. This week we are discussing miscalenous nursery furniture!

Re: Product spotlight: Misc. Nursery Furniture

  • I have really enjoyed having our cube cubby shelves for books and toys. Especially once baby is just a little bit older, enough to recognize something they want on the shelf and pull it off themselves.  We try to keep just a minimal amount of toys out at a time, but in rotation, ala Montessori ish, and that has worked really well for us!

I didn't buy anything new since we had several of those little 3-cube tall multipurpose cubby shelves, I was able to just lay a couple flat to make a nice cubby corner. ;)  But they have nicer ones finished on all sides, two cubbies high, that look really nice, I probably would have gotten if I didn't already have something workable on hand.

  • We have a little caddy on top of the dresser for diaper changing essentials, but even that turns into a mess lol personally, I have to go through and declutter the thing every so often, but it's better than the alternative of just having it all over the surface.

Obviously there's a tonne of different styles available, but they all do the same thing.</div>
People also like to have dividers in the drawers, because baby things are so tiny!  There are several different styles, available at places like Ikea, container store, Amazon etc.  I only used a makeshift divider in one to keep the pants separate, and the rest I have organized in little stacks.  I did a combination of rolling up little pants so you can see them all, and staggering folded stacks of onesies and jammies so I can just look at it and see what's in the pile.  I really need to redo the top drawer because it's become a disaster, (and probably should have been more compartmentalized from the start), but I find every so often when they are sizing up, you are kind of re-doing and shifting everything around over and over anyway, so it's not like you can get too attached to a particular configuration. 🤷

  • @rivercitynik I do not have nursery organization figured out, like at all, so I'm here for others' tips. :) But two things that really helped us:

    (i) Non-see through bins - baby and toddler stuff is just so random and oddly shaped, and we have given up on keeping things nicely stacked or organized. Being able to toss like things together in a bin and keep them out of sight is hugely helpful. I envy people who can make open shelving work. We are not them. I know a lot of people who really like the Ikea Trofast system, especially for toys as baby gets a little older.

(ii) Having a system for rotating clothes out during the first year, when people will constantly gift you things not-current-size and baby will grow out of and into a whole new wardrobe every 3-4 months. At the suggestion of a friend, we designated different dresser drawers for 0-3 month, 3-6 month etc. and let chaos reign for sizes we weren't using yet. Then as DS grew out of things, we dropped them into a medium-sized vacuum seal bag in the closet that we rotated out as it got full.

Does anyone have a specific rug or store they love? We kept the one from our guest room and it's fine, but nothing special and a jute sort of material that's not very cushy. And rugs can get so expensive so fast!
  • @emiliadkay I purchased a rug from Wayfair and I love it! Price was great, quality is great and delivery was really fast as well!
  • @emiliadkay We have an 8x10 Safavieh rug in our bedroom from Overstock that I really like. I don’t know that I’d describe it as “cushy”, it’s probably on the thinner side, but it’s softer than I expected and feels good under my toes when I get out of bed. 😊 And it was a great rug sale they were having when I got it!
  • Thanks for the tips @BusinessWife and @emiliadkay! I think Target has some nice rugs and the perk is they are fairly easy to return if you order one and it doesn't work for the space.

We’ve bought rugs from World Market in the past and are eyeing one from there for the nursery (haven’t purchased yet). They’re not outrageous and there’s a pretty wide variety of styles.
  • Also I hear Pier One is going out of business?? Don’t know what their rug situation is, but I imagine everything is on sale.

Oh wow @viola_mama what a shame, but I'm not surprised.  It's been hard enough for brick and mortar places to compete with online, but that was so much the appeal of Pier 1 I feel like, walking around, browsing (and touching everything!  :D) but that is good to know for deals ;)
  • We love the IKEA diaper cart (you can find similar at Target and other places). Our rug is from PBK and it's cute but the quality is not great especially for the price. If I were doing it over I would get a ruggables rug since it's washable, but people complain that the ends curl on those. Anything soft and shaggy would be nice.

Agree with @emiliadkay that you will need lots of baskets and bins. We use the clear bins for long-term storage and easy access stuff goes in cute baskets.
