Product spotlight: teething accessories

This is a place for FTMs to ask questions about, S+TMs to share their prior experience with, and everyone to share what they're eyeing in the world of maternity, baby and postpartum products. Each week we'll spotlight a new category of product to help streamline and make it easier to refer back. This week we are discussing Teething Accessories!

Re: Product spotlight: teething accessories

  • We got the Matchstick Monkey Mini Monkey Teether, this was good when DS first wanted to mouth things at 3m because its not as big as other ones and comes in lots of bright colors so it was easy for him to see. Unfortunately, we've lost it but I will definitely be getting a new one for this baby.

We also had a Nubby teething mit, which was ok for teething but was a great toy for cafes etc. as they can't drop it.

When DSs molars were starting to come through we got a Molar Mallet Teether which wasn't worth getting. It was really difficult for DS to get into the back of his mouth. It also has a rather hard metal ball inside it which I have been hit with more than once.

We didn't have that much of an issue with teething though DS got his teeth early and each set all at once. On three separate occasions he got 3 new teeth in a week. This sounds like it would be hell but his teething wasn't any worse with three than it was with one and we essentially missed 6 teething episodes.

  • I’ve had my eye on some nubby teething mits, I was wondering if it would be too soon to have teething toys on hand? Around 3 months is that usually when they start to put stuff in their mouth?
I did buy a couple teething accessories that attach to a paci clip. It was just to cute not to have, it’s a bit on the bigger side so I’d be interested in looking for “mini teethers”!
Also, I’ve seen some bandana style bibs that have teethers built in? Are those worth having?

I don't think it's a bad idea to have a few different options ready to try, just not to go crazy trying ALL THE THINGS until you're there and see what works / doesn't work for your kid, in that particular phase. 🤷

Some kind of freezable water teether will probably come in handy.  We had a pair of cute ones that i think maybe were a bit too smooth / wide, but if you see one with a little more texture for gums to grip and rub on, that should be good.  I think a lot of the water ones will say not to freeze, but really it's fine. #dontquoteme

DD really liked the textured little mini Sophie giraffe, but the bigger Sophie was good, too.  We got one of those mitts later on that might have been good to have sooner, because by the time we tried it, she just wanted to pull it off and play with the crinkle lol but if you have at least one mitt to try, it probably a good idea.

We didn't really need too many bibs at all till teething (and drooling) started, but I think a teething bib might be convenient when you are out, so the baby doesn't just drop their teether toy on the floor.  But I think at home we would just change out a bib when it got soaked, and keep chewing on the same toy, vs. have to throw a whole wet teething bib in the wash, and then also give them a new teether toy. IDK, but I would maybe just try one out and see how practical it may really be for you, before getting whole bunch.

I feel like the basic teething keys were a hit in our house, and she also liked the wooden rings with little fabric bunny ears.  But if I could only pick two it would the the mini Sophie and a set of keys. 🤷 ETA + something freezable, which some of the keys are, so that could possibly do double duty.

Oh! And the teething banana toothbrushes.
  • My son who is 16 months still likes the teething banana sometimes.

We just found DS1 teething banana toothbrush and he wanted to try and use it again (he's 5). We also found those teethers that you can put in the fridge/freezer worked well too.
