Product Spotlight 5/22: Bottles and Feeding

This weeks product spotlight is all about bottles and feeding!! Feel free to use the prompts or just type away! Links/photos welcome.
I snagged a schedule that's been used I think by a few BMBs now, but if you guys want to add/change anything let me know!!

This is a place for FTMs to ask questions about, S+TMs to share their prior experience with, and everyone to share what they're eyeing in the world of maternity, baby and postpartum products. Each week we'll spotlight a new category of product to help streamline and make it easier to look back and reference!

DS wasn’t picky and used any of the bottles that we tried. He wasn’t able to nurse for the first month and used Dr Browns, Avent and the bottles that came with my Spectra pump. Lactation consultant recommended the Dr Browns but I hate the extra pieces to wash.

ETA: I liked the Avent the best out of the ones we tried.

Sorry I've been gone for so long everyone, but I'm here now  :)

Dr. Browns bottles are excellent because the nipple sizes are highly quality controlled. With other brands a slow flow can be quite different between one to the next, etc. We never had gas issues, so I can't speak to the vents. But, we had a lot of feeding difficulty with our first in the NICU, and the speech therapist there got us started on the Dr. Browns with a smaller preemie nipple which helped for our little one. They are sold with the #1 nipples, but they do make smaller ones if you find you need them.

Tip: they make novelty pattern ones that end up in clearance sections etc. We got a 2 pack of patriotic ones at TJ Maxx or Marshalls (one of the 2) for a great deal

Just thought of something else to share!

If you find you need nipple shields to nurse, know that they come in different sizes. I was only told this by 1 out of 4 lactation consultants, and getting the right size made a difference for me
  • @pghren babies r us used to do free dr brown bottles when you got their catalog. I had a few from that too. Sad they aren’t around for the new moms to grab.
  • @ktholysz I got so many free seasonal bottles that way! I miss that and their Black Friday diaper sales.  :'(

  • We used Dr. Brown's bottles mostly too since DD was a preemie and they used that in the NICU. My SIL also gave us a bunch from her kids, so we just stuck with that brand. No major complaints but no big raves either. We lost them all, so are open to trying something new this time.

Has anyone tried the MAM brand bottles? I got an anti-colic sample free with a Motherhood order and was very interested in some of the features (bottom screws off for cleaning; you can add 1oz water and sterilize each bottle separately, which I know isn't necessary but I needed to with a preemie).
  • Avent was the only brand that DD liked. Since we mostly breastfed we always used the lowest flow nipple so that it wouldn’t get “easier” than the boob.
  • @balletnerd that's a good point and reminder. I'll be sure to check the flow of whatever I get and have enough of the lowest flow. I plan to breastfeed again too, but need to have back up bottles. I had enough issues with DD early on (preemie, very curved roof of her mouth, thrush, etc.) that I pumped and bottle-fed a lot in the beginning.
