FFFC - 5/1

Flame free Friday confessional!

Flame on, you crazy diamonds...

Mine:  I want a cigarette SO BAD.  I'm not going to have one, but I see people smoking on TV and get really cranky.  I quit like 7 months ago, I don't know where the cravings are coming from all of a sudden.
Current pregnancy -
First BFP on 1/4/22.  Due date 9/13/22.

Four prior losses, no living children - 1 first trimester miscarriage, 1 blighted ovum, 1 chemical, and one extreme premature live birth daughter who died at 15 days old.

Re: FFFC - 5/1

  • @kboydbowman in the same vein,I have wanted a margarita for weeks. I keep having dreams where I forget I'm pregnant and go drinking and then remember I'm pregnant. I do not remember craving alcohol in my last pregnancy but I guess it wasn't a pandemic...

  • I am part of other online pregnancy communities mostly as a source of entertainment. Some people are just so absurd on other boards.
  • @mckjacks that's why I've always liked this board. I think the structure helps to keep the crazy away. 🤪
  • I ate over easy eggs yesterday with toast and it was delicious!
  • @mckjacks Agreed!!!

@carrotsandpeas3 I’ve also been craving margaritas and wine. I can hear the blender of my next door neighbor when they’re making one, and it makes my mouth water. I’m not even a big drinker. And I’ve also had that dream too.
  • I’ve started pretty much letting my toddler eat whatever she wants for meals.  Sugar cookie and blueberry’s for breakfast.. not a problem!  It’s easier than fighting with her at this point.

@mamahosch yum!!! Eggs Benedict sounds amazing right now.   I love poached eggs.
  • @mamahosch I couldn’t figure out why you posted that on this thread until I remembered you’re not supposed to eat eggs that aren’t fully cooked while pregnant. 😂😂 I’ve eaten so many over easy eggs this pregnancy and never even think about it (but the eggs do come from my chickens)
  • @mamahosch I've been eating over easy eggs at least once a week. I try to follow most of the food rules but that one I can't do. I love runny eggs!
  • The only kinds of eggs I eat are poached and soft scramble, so I violate this rule all the time.

  • @kboydbowman Alcohol has been my biggest craving- specifically margaritas! Our favorite restaurant makes this amazing blackberry sage margarita and I really want one! My husband keeps telling me to order a virgin margarita but it’s not the same.

@mamahosch, I’ve been eating slightly runny eggs and am not super-worried- they’re pasteurized. It’s one of the few rules I ignore.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one craving margaritas! And I'm not even that big of a tequila person, but maybe because the weather is getting warmer or something? @mamaheatherl that blackberry sage margarita sounds divine.

My FFFC: I've started a list of things I want to eat as soon as I give birth, and the one thing that is currently topping that list is a spicy tuna poke bowl. I even know which restaurant I'll be getting it from and what to order so it meets my exact favorite specifications. I must have googled "Can pregnant women eat spicy tuna?" at least once a week during this pregnancy in the hope of finding something (anything!) that tells me I can have it because I am craving it like whoa. But alas, no luck.

  • I don’t like Rachel Hollis. She has some nuggets of wisdom, but I find a lot of her stuff problematic. Everyone else seems to love her and I just don’t get it.

  • I, too, am cravings margaritas. I’ve scoured Pinterest for non alcoholic recipes but I just can’t get motivated to make one if there is so fun involved.

I ate sushi last night for dinner. During my first pregnancy, my OB told me that sushi from a well known restaurant is safer than a McDonald’s chicken sandwich. So I’ve stuck with that all 4 pregnancies and all 3 of my babies thus far, are....normal. I don’t do any of the high mercury fish (I don’t like those anyways), but I will do salmon, limited tuna, and cooked shrimp. I also had a couple of tempura vegetables and those were delicious. #noregrets

  • @babyodo Actually, several of the "crunchy mama" books say that it's fine, with supporting data, as long as it's from a reputable place.  The flash freezing process kills the potentially bad bacteria, and the "raw fish" risk is no worse during pregnancy than at any other time, nor is it harmful to the fetus if you actually get sick.  I had sushi for the first time last night (although I hid it from the boy person because I REALLY wasn't in the mood to listen to him bitch).

I’ve been sober for a year now so definitely wouldn’t be drinking even if it wasn’t for being pregnant, but I’ve also been craving red wine (my drink of choice). I was actually just holding my sister’s glass up to my nose to get the yummy smells from it lol. This was a little before quarantine.

@mamaheatherl I don’t like her either. I think a lot of white lady lifestyle gurus like her are very problematic.
  • I'm so glad to see you ladies are eating sushi. My birthday is coming up and I already told MH that I want sushi from our favorite place. I've been tormented about whether I'd just get cooked stuff or at least a few pieces of what I really want. So that's decided.
  • babyodobabyodo member
I've read that if you order from a reputable place where you've eaten from before and haven't gotten sick, then you should be okay. Which is a relief, because I just can't seem to shake this craving. I'm good with eating the cooked sushi, especially since over half of the specialty rolls at my favorite sushi spot are cooked, but damn if that spicy tuna roll isn't calling my name!

  • I have been craving sushi but trying to play it safe by making my own tempura shrimp rolls at home. They satisfy the craving for a little while. But our FAVORITE sushi place is going to have a Mother’s Day special (take-out due to COVID) and with all this encouragement I am considering begging my husband to go get it. 😁
  • @aefsparrow Preach.  He's got me on half-caf coffee and GAWD FORBID if I occasionally have a second cup or a soda.  I'm laying here eating veggies and he's chomping down a plate of French fries and working on his 5th soda of the day.

  • @aefsparrow @kboydbowman Overbearing DH vibes over here too. He bought the tiny cans of diet coke and was drinking one earlier and said, "I like these cans. Perfect for you to have one a day." They're 24 mg of caffeine. 😑 And last time and this time he swears if I eat sugar I'm destined to get GD. Sigh. I would totally drink a glass of wine later on if it were just me, but his head would explode.

  • I wish I could sneak you guys some caffeine. Has being in the house with them ALL THE TIME made it harder to sneak things, or is it just me?? 🤣 My doctor (with my husband present!) gave me a thumbs up for caffeine to help control my headaches, so we don’t have those debates. Hubs is pretty concerned about food safety though, so sushi for Mother’s Day was a non-starter. Didn’t help that my mom got food poisoning last weekend... 🙄😩
  • @baseballismyfavoriteseason OMG so much harder.  I waited to order my sushi when he was taking a nap and then he woke up right as I was setting it out to eat.  I had to hide it with a blanket and wait until he made a grocery run an hour later to snarf it down!

  • You guys are cracking me up. DH wouldn't dare tell me what to eat or drink. He even u-turned when we were out and drove past a Starbucks the other day, and I casually said a latte sounded good.

LOL @carrotsandpeas3 same here. MH knows how hangry I get normally, and pregnancy just exacerbates that, so he lets bygones be bygones. He does get concerned with the big stuff (like when I wanted a spicy tuna poke bowl last weekend) but I reassured him that 1) I had them cook the tuna through, and 2) I'm allowed to have a certain amount of tuna, just not every day.

We're struggling because he's trying to lose weight (he has gained about 50lbs since starting a desk job a year ago) whereas I'm trying to gain (or at least not lose) weight since I'm actually down about 4-6 lbs from before I got pregnant. So, our menu options have been a struggle. We often have to have separate meals just to maintain harmony.

  • @babyodo I struggled with nausea through almost my entire previous pregnancy, so DH learned that whatever I was wanting and willing to eat, I should eat. I haven't been quite as bad this time since leaving first tri, but I think that's still his motto.
  • @babyodo I’m in the same boat as you! DH is really sweet about making sure I get veggies and fruits in, but if I want to order Chick fil a instead of eating leftovers (which he knows now I cannot eat at all pregnant) he tells me he wants it too 😂 There have also been times we’ve ate completely separate things and it’s actually been nice since he can eat what he wants and I can eat what I want!

I literally cannot imagine my husband trying to police what I eat 😳 That’s the type of authority you have over a toddler, not a spouse.
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @Kurtni It's definitely super annoying, but we're both first time parents and I'm "elderly" in terms of being pregnant, so this may be the only chance we have to have a biological child. So I try to remember that he just wants to try to maximize the chance we have a healthy child. Whether there would be any truth to it or not, if I miscarried at this point for any reason other than a serious congenital issue we BOTH would be wondering what we could have done differently.

  • In some ways it's super annoying, but he isnt smacking my hand or taking food away (which my grandma used to do to me). I think of it more as one of the only ways he can feel like he's supporting the baby and protecting me. If he had done this before I was preggo his ass would've been kicked to the curb long ago. He also gets huffy if I flop around or move too fast getting up. I'm pretty sure he would plastic bubble me until October if he could, just to be safe.
  • @aefsparrow I'm not "allowed" to lift anything more than 5 pounds (we have a subchorionic hematoma scare about a month ago).  But that includes the trash, so... :)

  • My DH has insane anxiety, so that's where he's coming from. And I told him to eff right off with 24 mg of caffeine a day. 😂 I eye roll him sometimes, but I understand he's coming from a place of anxiety and just know this is temporary.

  • @carrotsandpeas3 DH is on his way home from Starbucks picking me up some caffeine for this headache as we speak lol.

@kboydbowman I definitely milk things like that a little bit :) I figure I have to carry, birth, and nurse these little humans of ours, so he can do some extra chores for me.
