Newbie, ivf during Covid 19

Hi Everyone,
I'm new to this forum. Never been pregnant. Married 7 years. 2 iui both failed. Stimming for first ivf. Egg retrieval in +- 2 to 3 days. Is there anyone else out there doing ivf during this Covid outbreak? What are the challenges that you are facing?

  • Hey lotus, welcome! I’m new to the forum as well. I think a lot of us are sitting on the bench right now, not many clinics are doing retrievals, luckily if your clinic is willing to do a retrieval things should go smoothly. I made it 4 days prior to my FET before they shut things down. I’m so excited for you! Coming from a nursing perspective just make sure you’re going on walks and keeping your lungs open!! Also, another thing I didn’t really know about IVF, just in general is that you can never guess how many embryos will pull through in the end. I had 13 follicles, 9 mature, 8 fertilized, and ended up with 3 in the end. My last US before retrieval showed 21 follicles so just be prepared! Good luck!!! You’ve got this!

  • Hi Sisurn24, I'm also a nurse :) I'm so happy for you with all those amazing follicles. Have you had your transfer yet or are you waiting? I think I have about six follicles, two large ones. Having egg retrieval tomorrow. I'm in South Africa. Our President has us on total lockdown for a month now. He did this when we reached 25 deaths in our country. It's flattened the curve alot. Only essential services operating, thankfully my fertility clinic stayed open
  • It was crazy because I had so many follicles and so few eggs. 😑 I’m so glad your clinic stayed open!! Keep us updated on how many they retrieve! It’s so exciting and scary all at the same time. My clinic only does freeze all cycles so I am still waiting to transfer because everything got put on hold. Good luck!!
  • My clinic just now starting to reach out to some women who are over 35 and are in a good health in general (I’ll be 37 in a month).

At my first IVF I had 70 follies and ended up with only 2 good embryos. I think it’s actually better to have smaller number, but better quality eggs. So far (5 days into stims), they only saw about 17 growing, which is still a lot, but sounds much more reasonable.

good luck! Looking forward to hear how the retrieval went.

  • Hi Sisurn24
I hope that you are keeping safe during this time. I wish you so much best wishes when you do transfer. They retrieved one egg. It fertilized. Had embryo transfer yesterday now on 2ww.
  • Hi Fuzzydust,
I cannot begin to imagine how you managed with 70 follicles. That's amazing. I was so uncomfortable with my few follicles. I'm 39 yes old. I wish you tons of success with your stims. May you have lovely eggs. They retrieved one egg from me. Now on tww, had the embryo transfer yesterday
  • @lotusblossom13 , Hope your embryo is strong and sticky! The fact that it fertilized and made it to transfer is a great sign! In my last IVF I lost 10 out of 13 eggs between the retrieval and having a blastocyst embryo, so having less might be a good thing, as it seems to greatly improve the quality!
