Plus Size Check In :: 4/28/20

Hi! So I’m not really sure what to put in these threads so far. Anyone have anything in particular they’d like to see here?

Re: Plus Size Check In :: 4/28/20

  • So hi! I’ve been plus size my whole life. I’m currently a size 28. I’ve found a couple of options for maternity clothes that go up to my size, but they’re expensive 😂

  • I am right on the edge of plus size, and I find it absolutely hard to find relatively cheap, not terrible maternity clothing. I am normally a 14 /16 - but I got HUGE with my son, so trying to plan around that.
Walmart has some cute / cheap options by the Oh! Mama brand that go up to 3x.   JCPenny also has some cute basics in plus size.
I don't know why stores think if you are a little larger and pregnant all you wear is leggings and T shirts. I still need work appropriate dresses, dress slacks, etc. So frustrating. And I am only going to wear them for a few months, so cheaper the better!  Also - what is WITH the button down shirts? I don't wear button down blouses normally, they are not nearly as prevalent in other sections, the period in my life where I am busting out on the front is not a great time to adopt button down shirts.
I also found the Lularoe perfect T  and Irma have room for belly, and come generously sized. I am normally a small (as a 14) in those, so I am buying a off the GOOB sites for like$5 each.  I'm not usually a fan of MLM, but those look super cute for pregnancy, and run big enough.
Honestly some of my favorite "maternity" items last time were non-maternity items that had room in front or pants with elastics.

  • My main issue with maternity clothes is that very very few companies go up to a 28 or 30. Pink Blush has all sorts of stuff, but you have to double check the sizing. Yours is also really cute and they go all the way up to a 34.

I don’t do button downs unless I have to 😂 thankfully, I don’t have to worry about office wear. My company supplies our work clothes and they have a specific thing for pregnancy when you can’t fit the bottom anymore. I just need another pair of leggings or two 🤣

  • @dreamscapes_ I love pink blush - so cute and well made. But SO spendy.

  • @dreamscapes_ for my last pregnancy I was a 26/28 on the bottom and a 18/20 on top. I wore normal "starfish" pants from Lands End in 3x and maternity sweaters and whatnot I got from Target usually in a 2x. This go around I'm smaller but still plus with a 10/12 top and a 18/20 bottom. I ordered from GAP clearance and it FINALLY shipped! I also swear by lularoe, the "perfect" tops are GREAT for maternity. I saved all of them from when I was bigger and will just make due.

@the_road_to_oz those are some great tips!  I honestly haven’t even thought about maternity clothes yet! I definitely need a new pair of maternity jeans. I only wore one pair last pregnancy and the thighs are almost worn out. My son was born in June so a lot of what I got for each stage of bump is not seasonally appropriate for this December baby.

I’m plus size but I’m also short with very short legs and a long torso. I have a hard time finding shirts long enough.
  • I'm about the same size as I was for my first pregnancy, 22 in pants 1/2X in shirts.  I found that I didn't need to start wearing maternity clothes until about halfway through my pregnancy.  I got away with a few motherhood maternity black pants and a lot of my normal tops.  I'll echo @the_road_to_oz - LuLaRoe was a godsend last time.  I bought several Nicoles and wore them to work with leggings or tights.  I'll get some use out of them this time too.

  • @willashbaby I don’t think Lands End carries anything in my size except shoes, to be honest. I also really really hate LuLaRoe (don’t kill me). A friend of mine got sucked into them and is in so much debt due to their structure. I know a lot of people like them, I just don’t.

I honestly think I’m just going to wear a lot of dresses and short leggings 😂 we live in Florida, so it’s already in the 90s some days. I’ve also been teaching myself to sew, so I can pretty easily make a basic empire waist dress with a lot of room.

  • Hi, I'd like to participate I  the plus size check in. I have to warn you ladies though, due to already having two small children, I only get like an hour at night and sometimes 1 in the morning too to get on here, but I swear I'm not ghosting you, my replies just take 24ish hours.

My biggest challenge is being a 38H+ and only 5'3". I am also annoyed that I don't get the cute bump pics, and by the time it's even noticeable I'm ku, I'm like 7 mo pregnant, then the comments are all like, wow you're gonna pop any day! Like, no, thanks, I still have 9 more weeks. I'm also freaking out about the gd test. I've been pre-diabetic for about 8 years, diet controlled, and failed my 1 hr with my first.

My previous two pregnancies I actually had to size down on maternity specific stuff because the extra belly room on my usual 2xl meant I had to hem everything, but mediums fit fine? I still wore 2xl in regular clothes until it rode up my belly too much.

@antera23 ugh, yes on the seasons. DD was June, DS was March. I am not interested in buying another bigger winter coat. I may look more seriously into the zipper based expanders this time.

@the_road_to_oz One of my biggest regrets was not spending more $ the first time around on nursing/pumping friendly clothing because I worried I might only need it for 6 months. Here I am, 3.5 years later having been constantly pregnant and/or nursing 1-2 babies.

Now I live in my latched mama mompers. https://latchedmama.com/products/latched-mama-nursing-rompers Their sizing is super simplified (the petite fits 00-6, the standard fits 6-18, and the plus fits 18-28) so even though I've been everything from a 8-18 during previous pregnancies, all 9 of my mompers will still fit fine. Plus, they have nursing access, and I can slip my leg through the generously dropped crotch and pull it up like a skirt for bathroom breaks.

  • Hi all! After I had my first child it has been hard for me to lose that weight (I out on 40 lbs and lost 10 right after he was born). I am a size 18. Last pregnancy I got most of my maternity clothes from target. I do love pink blush maternity- I got my baby shower dress from there. I have most of my leggings from my last pregnancy still and the t-shirts. I am bummed that I won’t get to experience having a bump this time until about 20 weeks and I am sure people will think I am further along then I actually am. After this baby is born my goal is to lose weight immediately and not putting it off like I kept doing with my first.

I am also planning on asking my doctor for advice on how to gain as little weight as possible since I’m sure they will bring up my weight anyway.
  • It's interesting, I didn't feel much weight related aversion (or lectures) with my normal doctor (I'd know him for years) but at the hospital they were pretty awful. People can be pretty mean and awful, especially medical staff. It's hard not to let it get to you and I'm still angry about a lot of what I experienced but I do speak up for myself more now. If I hear a disparaging comment I let them KNOW I heard them. It tends to shut people up a bit and remind them to mind their manners. If anyone needs to vent about anything in particular like that, feel free. Unless you've been in our shoes people have no idea what we have//will go through.
  • Hello everyone, so glad there is a plus sized forum here. I'm just 8 weeks and looking forward to my first ultrasound next week. I havent even thought about maternity clothes yet as I'm hesitant to get too invested just yet.
With that being said, in my head I imagined my clothes may fit for a while as I dont wear many tight items usually. I'm an 18-20 at the moment and feel like I've gained a bunch since stopping Keto when I found out I was pregnant.
Since I live in Canada, we don't have target here so I wondered if anyone knew any canadian/online stores that sold plus size maternity that was reliable?
I'm also interested to hear when people started showing? What are some of the best pieces of advice you received during your journey?
Did any of you use midwives?
    Looking forward to connecting!
  • @international-love  I was a 16-18 when I was pregnant with my first. I had a flat stomach then and started showing around 14-16weeks. This time from loose skin I’m expecting closer to 20 weeks. Best advice is to enjoy the pregnancy, I can’t tell you how much I missed being pregnant after it was over. Of course I was excited to have my son but being the only one who truly connected with him during my pregnancy was something so amazing.

Motherhood maternity and Pink blush maternity are great. Also if you don’t need to dress nice for work just stock up on maternity leggings and T-shirt’s. In the fall and winter I just put a sweater over them to dress them up a little bit more.
  • @conni0205 thanks for this. Great reminder and definitely exciting but trying to wait until 2nd trimester to truly celebrate.
With covid-19, working from home has been great for nausea and wearing fancy clothes has not been needed but great to think about!
Congrats on baby #2. I'm sure it's going to be such an incredible journey!! How old is your 1st?

  • I definitely have conflicting feelings about lularoe. So comfy stretchy good- such terrrrrrible business ethics on how they treat their consultants.

  • Maternity clothes are insanely hard to find in store for plus size! Even on a regular day. Guess manufacturers think we don’t wear clothes? Lol

@dreamscapes_ I loved Pink Blush when I had DS!

  • @jbal918 I know, right? Regular plus size is bad enough, but add in maternity and it’s like searching for a white whale. No pun intended 🤣🤣🤣 Pink Blush has some really cute stuff... I don’t know if I’ll end up actually buying anything or not during the pregnancy. I wear a uniform at work and a lot a lot a lot of sundresses because I live in Florida 🤣

I’ve also been trying to find nursing bras in my size, which is next to impossible. I’m a 54B, and I’ve found one bra that might work. I’m pretty crafty, so I’ll probably just google how to make comfy sports bras and go from there.

  • @dreamscapes_ My boobs did not grow at all last time but this time they actually seem a little bigger so that’s my big excitement for my boobs to match the bump this time hahaha

  • Oh the Lula, I honestly bought most of it from consultants trying to get out. Figured I'd help them out since I knew they were getting screwed and at the time it really did work for me very well. I know one girl who's still in it now and I feel so bad for her! After this I'm donating whatever's left! Oh, my GAP order of this winter's clearance for next winter finally shipped after 20 days, I'll have a coat, a sweater, some jammies, and one dress to get me through! Plenty of my other sweaters are Eileen Fisher and huge so they'll work for pregnancy anyway, lol!
  • @international-love my first is 15 months!
  • Thanks for starting this thread!  I'm normally a size 16 which is kind of an in-between size, where I'm either wearing the largest size in a "regular store" if I'm lucky or the smallest size in a plus-size store. Ironically, size 16 is the most common size for adult American women so obviously the fashion industry is failing us, but that's a whole other conversation.
I'm super bloated right now, so none of my size 16 pants fit me.  I've been wearing yoga pants, pajamas, or sweatpants for the past month since I've been working from home. I'm not sure whether I should buy some size 18s or just jump into maternity stuff. My bras are becoming a little too tight as well and I feel self-conscious in anything but a big baggy shirt.  Glad to be following this, and I'll look into some of the brands people are mentioning!
  • @sejica same here - I have two little guys and only get to check every other day or so. Being exhausted all the time is not helping at all.

My biggest issue with clothing is pants. For years I have lived in jeans. I'm somewhere around a 20/22 but I have to buy tall lengths or they shrink up too much after the first wash. Since being a SAHM I spend a lot more time in loungewear so it's a non issue, but if I leave the house it's always in jeans.

During my first pregnancy I worked FT and had to dress professionally which meant I had to buy a few essentials. Since then, I *absolutely refuse* to spend $40+ on pants that are at least 3 inches too short. I'm not big on leggings or dresses but have resorted to maxi skirts when I just can't find anything else.
