NIPT versus Ultrasound Validity?

Hi! I am a pregnant with my second, and from what I remember w my first 8 years ago, I had blood work AND an ultrasound for genetic testing. The US was for nuchal translucency to look at the back of neck and nasal bone that can show features related to chromosomal abnormalities usually performed at the 13 week mark. This time around I am just doing NIPT through Progenity and no ultrasound.

I am wondering if it is standard to do blood work without that nuchal translucency US?

Re: NIPT versus Ultrasound Validity?

  • I was told that the blood test has a 97% chance of finding downs etc. And the U/S was something like 93%? The doctor I’m working with said usually we do one and not the other.

  • With my first pregnancy I just had the nuchal translucency ultrasound, but with the last two pregnancies I had both the nuchal translucency ultrasound and the NIPT (I was 32 and 34-35 with those pregnancies).  I think that the blood test did not exist when I was pregnant with my first, or maybe I did not qualify for it because I was 30-31.  I am now 39, so I assume I will definitely have both again.

Hi Knottie! Welcome! We usually try to avoid one off threads like this, not because we don't like the question, but because otherwise the board gets very cluttered. This question is perfect for "The Great Question Thread"
Also, if you haven't already, please introduce yourself in the "Introductions" thread and check out the "If Your Name Starts With Knottie" thread for instructions on how to change your screen name so we can all get to know you!
Thanks! I changed my name but for some reason didn't update immediately.
