Re: Product Spotlight 4/11: Newborn Clothing

  • I’m exciting about this one I love baby clothes lol Newborn size didn’t last too long for my son about a month maybe. I preferred sleepers over onesies and pants.

Target brand Cloud Island Sleepers are my absolute favorite. They have a reverse zipper which is super nice for diaper changes.

Also Halo sleep sacks my son slept in them every night and transitioned to a sleep sack. Which he is 2.5 years old and still sleeps in a sleep sack lol.

Has anyone ever used the sleep gowns? Like of course I’m sure we all see the Lou Lou and Company sleep gowns. I’m wondering if you loved them? I found another brand (Shop WillaB) and they were much more affordable. I thought I’d try two.

  • @ktholysz I liked the sleep gowns (DH called themselves Wee Willy Winky pjs) I can’t remember the brand we had. They made changes easy for those first couple of weeks.

You never know how big your babe will be or how things will fit so it is good to have both NB and 0-3mo stuff. Usually I lean towards minimalism in kiddo wardrobe (trust me you are going to find the things you really love or that work really well for your kiddo and pretty much ignore everything else) but those first few months there are a lot of diapers and spit ups and wardrobe changes (for everyone involved) Also the sizing is crazy different from brand to brand.

I preferred sleepers because they are just easier but I had a baby in a Nebraska winter (ie bitter cold) and now I’ll be having one at the end of a Nebraska summer (ie like the fires of the sun only humid) so it will be a whole new ballgame. Zippers good. Buttons less so.

Some babies hate swaddles. I had all of the swaddle options and he HATED them all. The closest thing he would allow was a sleep sack or gown if his arms could be free.

Apart from a few special items I got most of my baby clothes haul second hand. We have a chain of stores called Big Wheels to Butterflies that rocks for second hand baby everything and I made out like a bandit. I like really neutral stuff plain or stripes or simple patterns. I’m not big on funny sayings or graphics. You don’t have to spend. Fortune to have a well dressed babe!
  • Also, not clothes but totally related! Target has the best price for baby hangers.
  • Amazon basics kids hangers have been great for us. A 50 pack of the velvet non-slip is about $20. I had each kid get a different color.

@ktholysz I want Lou Lou and company gowns/swaddles so bad but they’re $$$!!! I followed a BUNCH of baby instas (like over 100) before this lil bean existed but I had to unfollow because I was sad I couldn’t get everything lol. I might have to get just one though because they’re so sweet looking.
I’m going to be on the minimalist train as well. I have so many clothes and I don’t really like having that many so I definitely don’t want my kids to have a million either. A lot of the essentials like onesies and stuff but not a whole lot of “cute” outfits.
My.H was supposedly early and 9 lbs 12 oz and I was late and 7 lbs 6 oz so I have no idea how big of a baby I’ll end up with. I don’t want a ton of.NB for that reason especially if I’m having a boy.
I’m most likely going to be buying a lot of target because shopping is overwhelming and I like one stop shops and inexpensive things lol except the one $30+ Lou Lou outfit I’ll get which will probably be our take home outfit 😂
Question for STMs: How many of each (roughly) clothing items do you think is good? Sleep sacks?
  • It’s tricky knowing what size your baby will need when born so I recommend getting at least one premie outfit if you think they might be on the smaller side. DD was born on due date but was swimming in newborn clothes. We had to run out and find some options for her.

Love the target cloud island pjs as well due to the zipper from the bottom for changes in the night. Also- snaps suck. Zippers all the way. One piece outfits are the best.
  • @greyl DH was 11lbs11oz when he was born (seriously!) And DS was only 6lbs4oz so I'd definitely get at least a few things in a smaller size since apparently you can't count on history. I only had 3 NB sleepers at first so I had to run out and buy some more since poor kiddo was swimming in 0-3

  • I basically bought nothing for my kiddo except for a couple of NB sleepers. I got a ton of gifts and a ton of hand me downs from my bff whose son is only 2 years older than DS.
He was a summer baby (June) so he hung out in sleepers when it was cooler, but mostly onesies or just his diaper because it was so stinking hot. I had some little shorts for him for when we went out but the kid basically didn't wear pants for like 3 months lol.
I liked Carters brand, and if you're in Canada Joe Fresh is awesome especially if you've got a baby with skinny limbs. DS has basically no fat on his arms and legs so they were awesome.
I wasn't a big fan of baby Disney stuff. They all seemed to fit really weird.
I have a lot of Jumpin' Bean which must be from my mom since it seems to be a Kohls brand (she works there) and it's pretty okay, lots of cute stuff.

  • I'm probably getting all of my baby clothes either secondhand (gently used or stain free) or from Walmart lol. They grow way too quickly to be buying really expensive outfits!
I'm trying to find a really cute newborn outfit (there was this one on Amazon with whales on it but unfortunately that's not available right now and I'm not sure it will be again) for coming home, but that's the only outfit I think I'm really going to splurge on, the newborn photos and the coming home photos. Might check out the expensive brands to see if there's anything I like!
  • I’ve found a lot of great things for great prices at Home Goods/TJmax/Marshals too.
  • When stores open back up too check the clearance racks. They should still have a good amount of clearance for late summer/fall babies.

@greyl I have a set of Lou Lou top and bottoms I bought on a warehouse sale. They feel a little thin. Could be why it was on sale lol. Sleep sacks they gave me one at the hospital and then I had two more. It really depends on how spitty the baby is. Outfits wise I’d have to count. I know for sure he worn newborn for two weeks. But he spit up a lot so I had to change him a lot. I’d start with at least 3 sleepers, 3 outfits and a going home outfit if you’d like. Targets clothes are so cute and you can normal buy in a multi pack too. Buy some baby bandannas too in case your baby is spitty too lol
  • @raesky1111 hand-me-downs are definitely the way to go (if you can) because they grow out of baby stuff so fast. I seriously swore DD wore her 3mo clothes for like two weeks. Sometimes you can get good deals on Nextdoor (like huge boxes of clothes for next to nothing).
  • I'm actually laughing now as I remember that I had to send MH home to get the NB sleepers and they had to find us a smaller hat because you basically lost my son in the average sized stuff they gave us. My poor tiny child lol.
And now we're having already having problems finding shirts that fit his shoulders and over his gigantic head 😂

  • @beaandthebabes Love getting great finds at TJ Maxx. Find the cutest 7 For All Man Kind sets for my boys there.

I love H&M’s baby and kid clothes especially their sweaters and little boy speedos.

@mflowers929 Same on finding things to fit over big heads! My almost 3yo’s head is only an inch smaller than mine. I have to pay attention when purchasing his clothes.

  • A few have mentioned cloud island at target and I want to join the chorus. They are great! Pretty inexpensive and the zipper goes from the foot up which is amazing.

Definitely have some newborn sizes, I like the 0-3 month size because they are smaller and you get more wear out of them. My boys were both bigger (8.11 and 9.9). My first fit in three newborn outfits that we had for a week and my second never wore newborn.

I like having a white onesie under all outfits since my kids were fall and winter babies. This is also helpful with blowouts. The plain onesie gets ruined and not necessarily the cute outfit.

We used halo swaddles with my first, but my second hated the swaddle.

Good advice on the white onesie under the cuter clothes!
And yes, I plan to be almost entirely secondhand for at least the first year if not longer depending on my child's growth rate. In Oklahoma we have a store called once upon a child that sells inexpensive gently used clothes up to I think about the average ten year old sizes so it'll be a great way to go once this whole virus mess clears up! Another avenue I'm planning on exploring is setting my dad and stepmum loose on garage sales once they can start again! They have like 20 something step grandchildren so they're experts at finding good used baby and children clothes at garage sales.
  • @raesky1111 garage sales are a great idea. I have got so many good items at amazing prices at garage sales. We have once upon a child here too and I think garage sales are better deals then there. And if your Dad and stepmom are expert garage salers they will get some awesome deals.
  • @raesky1111 I love finding secondhand everything. I’m a member of a moms group in my city and I have gotten so much stuff from fsot groups on Facebook.
  • Whatever you do, avoid buttons at all costs!  Zippers are your friend!

@slr1229 People think I'm crazy because I don't mind the buttons lol

@greyl the amount of clothes really depends on the kid. Some babies have diaper explosions a few times a day and some spit up after every feeding (bibs only helped us a little). Because the twins were small when they were born they wore a onesie and a sleeper during the day (otherwise they were too cold). Sometimes we had to change them 3-4 times a day. So I would tell you to get at least 6 onesies and 6 sleepers unless you plan to constantly do laundry. As far as sizing start with 3 month and towards the end of your pregnancy when you have an idea of weight maybe get smaller clothes. We started with 0-3 and some newborns...but they were 4lb 10oz when we brought them home and I had to buy some premie clothes...which they were in for at least a month. On the other hand one of my sister's kids was 11lb at birth and went straight into 3-6 month clothes.

And just to give you a glimpse of a possible future...the twins are 17 months and we change their clothes 2-3 times a day, not including PJs (I don't even bother with cute outfits; they pretty much stay in carter rompers or t-shirts/onesies and stretchy pants). They are just messy! I wash their stuff every 2 days or so, so I try to have about 10 outfits each (6 sleepers each for PJs) just in case.

  • Thanks for ideas on cloud island inverted zippers. Never knew the existed and I can’t wait to get them!!!

I like Carter’s brand pajamas and I usually shop children’s place for my toddler son now.
