Significant other and step child.

It’s hard for my daughter and my significant other to bond. And it’s to the point I feel like I have to choose between my child and my significant other. I love them both and of course I will choose my child first. I just want to know how or if there is a way I can get them to bond. I feel like nothing is working.. and with baby #2 on the way it’s very stressful and depressing.

    My daughter and partner clicked immediately. She may have another man's DNA, but she is his child in every way. She's closer to him in the 2 years we've been together than her father in the 23 years she's been alive. My SON, however, had a hard time bonding with him. In the end, I sat down with him and asked why he didn't like my partner. My partner isn't used to kids, and my 7yo is used to having me all to himself...or sharing with his 23yo sister. There was no real reason, and mostly it was him being afraid he'd get ignored like he does at his dad's house. That was about a year ago, and the two are super close now, but still are trying to set guidelines and boundaries. 

    It should be noted...I will always choose my kids over my partner. That doesn't mean I always take their side. I back up my partner when he finds fault with an action or tells my son to do something and my son doesn't want to. You can't always side with the kids, or that will set a precedent with the parent-child relationship...it applies to step parents, too.

    I have this same issue.  How old is your child?  Mine is only 3 so it’s hard to rationalize or have a deep conversation. It’s worse when she comes back from her dads. It’s so difficult and disheartening.
