Ha this is a funny one! I’m probably in the minority with most of mine.
1. Shopping cart cover. I thought I would use it, I used it rarely when she was little and just getting used to sitting in the cart, but it was such a pain in the ass to carry around one more thing I just stopped.
2. Binkie/pacifier. DD never used them, and we also didn’t encourage it because we really pushed breastfeeding. I won’t use one with the next baby most likely.
3. Swing. I work in OT and was never a fan of “baby containers” prior to being a mom, but figured I would get one just in case. Never used it, I always just had her on the floor.
@kc0711 agreed re: shopping cart cover. I returned the one I was gifted. We could have also done without a swing for DD b/c she didn't really like it. She liked a bouncer more. But I still wouldn't say it wasn't needed for us.
Re: Paci- for FTM, I'd recommend having one on hand, even if you prefer not to use it, so you have it if you get desperate. DD wasn't super dependent on them at first..... then we ST her and put 3 in the crib so she could always find one and she was a paci fiend (for sleep and car rides only... we never really did one for wake times unless she was sick or just crazy fussy for whatever reason.)
@blaf322 the NICU gave us so many of those avent soothies, DD was on a feeding tube and cpap at first so they always had a binkie in her mouth to work on her suck swallow reflex. We took them all with us, but then never used them again once we got home! I feel like most hospitals give out the soothies and so people who are on the fence about binkies can try it and see if baby likes them and then purchase more if need be. But hey, they are cheap, so that’s a plus!
@kc0711 actually, most don't anymore. I think the NICU is an exception... but for a term baby, the baby-friendly initiative means they won't give pacis. Our hospital wouldn't provide any for DD (which was fine b/c we knew that going into it and brought our own).
FTM- I just assumed a pacifier was a must, but now seeing your comments I’m wondering why you didn’t want to use them. Is it nipple confusion or something more?
I’m also excited to see those of you who didn’t want/need a baby swing. I’ve felt pressure to register for one even though I have serious doubts about their safety and usefulness.
What about things like a baby lounger that you use to keep baby safe on the couch; They claim you can also use them in the crib to help babies sleeping posture. There are different designs but typically look something like this...
@blaf322 interesting! We never got to spend any time outside of the NICU, so it is my only personal experience. Our hospital was really good at giving out all sorts of stuff for mom and baby on both the maternity ward and in the NICU. But it makes perfect sense that it is a hospital by hospital thing and not general across the board.
@amygray725 I would really caution against using any sort of infant positioner in the crib, safe sleep guidelines say bare crib with just baby for the first year. Please do your own research, but for me, the risks were too great to chance it. I never felt the need to use an infant positioner on the couch, I just put the couch pillows around DD so she wouldn’t roll off. And as an OT provider, the best thing for babies is freedom of movement. The more space and opportunities for babies to move, the better it is for their growth and development.
Pacifier- eh, my older 2 didnt use them, my 3rd did but stopped around 7/8 months old, and youngest- I WISH he would've taken a pacifier, but unless it was my breast- he didn't want it.
I don't love bumbo seats. Just not a fan. I always feel like those baby thighs are just so squished in them!
I’m unsure about places to put them for lack of a better word. Ive heard - a newborn lounger, an infant seat, a bouncer, a swing...I mean certainly she won’t need all of those things?? Right now I have this (Link below) on our registry, but should I put something else instead? Or pick 2 “surfaces” to be able to put her on? I know one of the purposes is to be able to be hands free but it just seems like a lot.
+1 to never using the shopping cart cover . Way too much trouble!
We used a swing a good bit, but for those of you looking for a baby holder, we used the bassinet attachment on our pack n play whole lot for the first several months.
@amygray725 I'm a hard no on anything in the crib with baby before 1yo b/c of what @kc0711 said. It's just not safe. That said, something like a boppy lounger or other place to set baby down while everyone is awake is fine if you want it. It's certainly not necessary. Re: your paci question.... the thought is that the sucking mechanism needed for a paci is different than what's needed for nursing and use of a paci before a good latch is established can hinder BFing success. It's something that's debated, though. There's a commonly noted waiting period (3-4 weeks, I think) to begin using a paci if you're BFing. BUT, my LC said that as long as you have a good latch, feel free to start using a paci. I have friends that followed that line of thinking without any issues as well, so it's what I'll be doing, again, this go round.
@b_1029 my only concern with the one you posted a link to is that it's super chair-like (back seems really upright and there's a hard bend at the seat). I wonder how well that would work with a floppy NB. Curious to see what other STM+ think on that. The one we have is something like this and it worked really well. My opinion is that you don't NEED all of the things but may want something like a swing too if your baby is a motion addict. DD didn't love her swing so, while we had it and had it out, we ended up buying that bouncer thing later and she loved that WAY more.
@modoodles we LOVED the Bumbo... but, DD is pretty long and lean so her thighs were never squished. If you want something similar, but without the thigh restriction, check out this sit-me-up. DD didn't like it quite as much (we were gifted both and just kept them)... but it's good for thick babies.
@kc0711 our hospital gives out all the things.... except formula and pacis. They won't give pacis at all (non-NICU) and my friend had to basically fight them to give her formula for her daughter, while they shamed her for doing it. I haaaaate the baby friendly initiative. I think, for people like me, the extreme "our way or the highway" pushes me away from BFing instead of the intended outcome, which is to better encourage it.
@blaf322 that’s crazy!! BFing is not for everyone, what about the moms that have no interest in doing it from the start?! I mean I am super pro BFing and will offer help to anyone who asks about it, but I also get it isn’t for everyone and not every baby is good at it from the beginning.
@b_1029 our sitter has that chair, you will need to use some rolled blankets at first to keep a newborn in the correct position. And I agree, you do not need all of those things. You also have no idea what your baby will like, and not all babies like things like that. We live in a small house so I did not want our home taken up by baby stuff. The swing that we have is a swing and a rocker seat in one with a small footprint. https://www.amazon.com/Graco-Cozy-Duet-Swing-Tenley/dp/B07D7D37S3/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=Grace+cozy+duet+plus+rocker&qid=1585154033&sr=8-3 I would recommend picking one thing you want and starting with that. I would also caution against things like infant loungers and positioners that have a really short “shelf life”, you use them for such a small amount of time and honestly you will probably be holding your baby a lot during that time anyways. And they don’t roll or move at that point, so to me, those things really don’t make sense 🤷🏼♀️
@b_1029 both my sisters have that rocker. And I have it on my registry as well because of how much I’ve liked using it for my niece and nephew. For the newborn stage we have been using rolled blankets/newborn insert positioner things and it works well. (I also have a swing on my registry... and a pack and play with a bassinet part lol. I will have no trouble returning/selling whatever would be used. Or I’ll bring something to my in laws who will be babysitting, etc also planning on use the pnp for the in between stage of a bassinet in our room and the crib in his room)
I think I’m in the minority but I never used my pack and play. I had a separate bassinet that was used when they were little little as a nap spot in the living room. When we traveled we used that.
Never used the diaper genie thing. I clothed my first until about 2, and my second until about 3 months (then nursing school started and didn’t have time for extra laundry). Even when we switched to disposable, I would wrap them up and throw them outside. In a new house with this little guy, but I wanna cloth again, so I’m just skipping it.
My friends bought me the pee pee tpee. (Little hat for boys when your changing the diaper). Used it like once, and his pee pushed it right off him.
