Buying and Selling!

It’s been kicked around a bit, because it seems like a bunch of us are in the same boat. Come here to commiserate about buying and/or selling a home during pregnancy.

Re: Buying and Selling!

  • Team buying and selling. Our house was an off market sale, our realtor found a couple who’s wish list was essentially our house. We showed it, and they liked it, and agreed to all the sale terms. Our closing date on our current house is March 27. The house we are buying is a complete gut. Our realtor found it for us when it was down to the studs. Our first house we bought was a lemon (a flip that was not done correctly, we ended up having to put so much money into it and one huge insurance claim when our piping failed). We were very hesitant to buy another flip, but have been part of the process from the beginning and so we’ve been able to monitor and make sure things are done correctly. We are super excited about the new house, the only thing is we don’t know if it will be done in time. So we will for sure be moving out of our house on the 26th with no guarantee that our house will be ready on that day. We have places to go until it is finished, but it’ll just be crazy. I’m spending today boxing up our kitchen. I HATE packing.

  • Hallelujah for this thread!  We close on our new house April 15 (the third house we put an offer on, the market right now is pretty hot) and we'll put our current place on the market soon after. As anxiety-producing as the COVID stuff is, being home does mean I can get little packing projects done here and there. I am kinda curious how COVID will impact the sale of our house? I imagine if we have to do open houses that may impact what kind of views we get but considering how low interest rates are right now, maybe we'll have enough interest anyway.  It's just a little 2 BD/1 BA, good starter home in a highly desired area, so fingers crossed it goes fairly quickly.

@kc0711 I feel you on the packing hatred.  I'm making a project of my closet this weekend. I can definitely pack up a ton of pre-pregnancy stuff so figure now is the time!
  • @rachelredhead I packed up most of my non maternity stuff a few weeks ago and have it sitting in space saver bags on the floor. I guess the nice thing about being pregnant is I have a small wardrobe and was able to easily choose what stays in the closet vs what gets packed!
  • @kc0711 yay thanks for starting this thread! I’ll def be back in as we move along but we have bought and close on the new place 4/9. Moving 4/10 then putting our house on the market immediately after it gets staged since we will be taking all of our furniture.
  • So @rachelredhead you mentioned this in your post but I’m also starting to worry about how covid may impact the selling of our house. My brother is our agent and when I talked to him about it early last week he didn’t seem worried, but obviously a lot of things have changed since then in our area, and looks like they will continue to get worse before getting better. I mean, people will still be wanting to look at houses but you kind of have to leave your own house in order to really look! Just scared what it may mean for open houses vs private showings and the timing of it all...
  • Yesterday was appliance day, and it almost went seamlessly. The microwave and dishwasher are fine. The fridge that arrived was not the right size, so that now has to get returned and a new one ordered. Hopefully it can be here by end of the week. We ordered the washer and dryer, but the dryer has to be special ordered because it is a gas dryer. The washer is supposed to be here on Friday, the dryer some time next week. Every little delay and I panic a bit that something else is going to fall through. Our kitchen cabinets got finished and the countertops got delivered, so that’s good. Now down to things like faucets, fans, light fixtures, etc. Nothing big left (well minus the appliance returns) but SO MANY little things. I also just gave up and hired a carpet cleaner for our house and my husband’s aunt is taking off work to help me clean, bless her. Oh and I need to finish packing. Can I either clone myself or get a few extra hours in the day with DD at the sitters??
  • @kc0711 new appliances are so exciting! Fingers crossed for no more delays.

Anyone else needing to shop for furniture and other things for the new house and worried about getting it done amid the store closures? Obviously this is major first world problems, but I was hoping we could look at stuff before moving (move date is 4/10) and get it delivered the same day we move, or at least the following day so we can be as set up as possible. Mainly worried about tv's  :D

Also, we had all these plans to have my in-laws watch DD for a day or so this weekend or next so that we could get our shit together packing-wise, but doesn't look like that is happening. Trying to figure out how we are going to pack/clean up our disaster of a house with a two year old running around...
  • @meanjellybean you are the best :D Not moving, but we went and ordered the glider/recliner for LO's room and chairs to go with the table DH built this weekend. I'm worried the recliner won't arrive before the baby does b/c of everything.... also FWP, but still.
  • oh, and regarding your DD, what if you set up some sensory bins? Something new to keep her occupied while you're busy. Obviously that only works if she's one that will entertain herself with that kind of stuff AND isn't prone to putting stuff in her mouth.

For us, we just did everything while DD slept. Lots of late night packing, unfortunately.
  • @blaf322 yeah I think we are going to be stuck with the latter - packing while she sleeps. Although I did order a few things off Amazon yesterday morning before they made the announcement they were only going to be shipping essentials, so maybe we can occupy her with those things for... 15 minutes lol
  • We are in the market for a place and have been going to some open houses, just looking. But the interest rates are low right now, so we got more serious last week and got preapproved and started looking for a realtor. Of course now we are in "shelter in place" mode in the Bay Area, so not sure what we will be able to accomplish in the next few weeks. But we shall see. This will be the first time owning something for both H and me, so we are excited about that. The market is crazy here though...we are looking at spending $600-750K+ for a 2 or 3 bedroom, 1.5 to 2.5 bath. Probably will be a condo or townhome too, not a single family detached house. Good times in the Silicon Valley!
