Breastfeeding

Crying/Screaming after feeding

Hi - first time breast feeding mom could use some help......

I have been breast feeding for 5 weeks now and it has been going well up until a few days ago. ?Over the last 2 days - at some feedings - my DD gets really upset at the end. ?She starts out fine - and towards the end of her time on each breast - she suddenly gets really hyper and starts head butting my breast! ?Then when I unlatches - she starts screaming and crying. ?Then I have to burp her through the crying fit. ?It is awful to see her cry like that. ?(I should mention that DD has colic)

?Anyone experience this? ?If so - do you know why it happens? ?What did you do that helped?

TIA!?

Re: Crying/Screaming after feeding

  • My DS does the same thing (still at 3 months old) and it's always gas.  He's fine the first part of his feeding and when he starts that I just pull him off and 'sit' him on my lap and burp him.  He usually lets out a big burp and then I can put him back on.

My DS was also colicky until I cut dairy at 4 weeks old.

  • Gas was always the issue for my DS around that age. And I remember the thrashing and screaming.  It's awful.  Have you tried the gas drops?  They did help my DS a lot.
  • My DS had reflux and did the screaming and arching with feedings.  Also had dairy intolerances and the screaming got much better when I stopped eating dairy.  Might just be gas too.  Try mylicon drops.
  • Thanks everyone! ?Good to know that the causes could be gas or acid reflux. ?I hate to think DD is in pain but now I can work on fixing that! ?

DD is currently on Zantac (a very low dose) and it does help a little but not the transformation I have heard others talk about. ?I am going to check with our doctor about her dose or ask about other options (like perhaps changing to Prevacid instead).

    ?You guys rock!?

  • My DS did the same thing and it turned out to be reflux.  We started him on Axid and he's been fine ever since.
  • DD does this near the end of a feeding.  She is not a good burper and always spits up but I never assumed it was gas (even though she always has gas).  I figured the head butting and screaming was because she didn't wanted to still be on the boob.  Maybe I need to keep an eye on reflux issues with her.
