Anyone else not gaining weight?

Hi ladies. I’m 17 weeks today and I’m stil at my pre-pregancy weight. I’ve read in some forums that this happens to some women but most articles say women usually gain weight by now. Trying not to worry, but wondering of any one else is experiencing this.

Re: Anyone else not gaining weight?

  • I have only gained like 3 pounds, realistically it was probably Christmas weight, my doctor hasn't said anything but I'm planning to ask at my appointment tomorrow. I'm 17 weeks and 3 days foday.

  • With my first, I didn't gain any until around that point.

If you're overweight to begin with, it's fairly common to gain less. And I have heard of very overweight or obese people gaining nothing at all the entire pregnancy. It makes sense if you think about it. You ARE gaining weight. You're gaining the 7.5 pounds of baby, the 1.5 pounds of placenta, the 2 pounds of uterus, the 4 pounds of increased blood volume, etc. You're simply losing fat at the same time you gain that other weight. Losing weight is about using more calories than you consume, so if you're suddenly eating healthier due to being pregnant or GD or whatever or if you keep your same diet that had allowed you to maintain your weight, you could gain little or no weight because your caloric needs increase while pregnant.

It's not necessarily a concern, but you can always ask your medical providers. If your baby is growing on track and you seem healthy, little or no weight gain shouldn't be an issue.
  • I wouldn't worry unless you were at a low weight before you got pregnant. With DS, I was borderline obese when I got pregnant and I didn't put on anything until 20w and I ended up 10lb lighter after I gave birth. This time round I've started at a healthy weight and I've put on 5lb so far. If you have a lot of morning sickness it's easy to lose a bit of weight in the begging too.
  • I wouldn’t worry too much! A lot of us are probably still recovering from the first tri nausea/vomiting. I Actually lost weight 🤷🏻‍♀️
  • I think its more common to have lost weight at this point due to morning sickness. I agree with the others, if you were underweight you need to be gaining at least some. I was underweight due to nursing for so long and have gained 10 pounds already. I am still "considered" underweight but this is what I consider normal for me. So I'm about 2 pounds over what I should have started at and I made a very conscious decision to get back to a healthy weight early for my and the babies health. If you were very overweight then considering the baby is only a handful of ounces right now you probably don't want to have gained much if any at all.
  • Thanks everyone. This really does put my mind at ease. My weight and BMI is within range, but yes, I’m definitely still recovering from first trimester nausea - so it makes sense that the weight gain is slow.
  • Just did :) Thank you!
