follicles and ovulation

edited February 2020 in Infertility
My husband & I have been trying to conceive & today I went for a sono today for abdominal pain.  The sonographer mentioned that I have a dominant follicle in my right ovary which I didn't think anything of.  However, after leaving and looking it up I found that since I am in (what should be) the luteal phase of my cycle with my period due tomorrow, I should not have any follicles in my ovaries because they disappear after ovulation.  Can anyone confirm? I am waiting to hear back from my doctor but nervous that the presence of a dominant follicle the day before my period means I am not ovulating

Re: follicles and ovulation

  • Do you have confirmation via tracking methods that you ovulated earlier in your cycle? Sometimes ovulation can be delayed due to a variety of factors. It also could be a cyst. What was your protocol this cycle? Meds?

  • To piggyback on WSS, if you're just counting cycle days, you might not be in your LP yet at all.  If you are struggling to conceive, and ovulating later than you think, you may even be missing your fertile window entirely!  Your cycle length can vary if the follicle takes longer to mature + rupture, so if they told you that they saw a dominant follicle, I would GDTPT!!!  :D  Feel free to lurk over on TTGP to get a feel for what the ladies are doing over there to track temps, if you're not already.  When ovulation occurs, there is a clear BBT temp spike.  That can help bring so much clarity for you in what your body is up to. :)
