Repeat c-section or VBAC?

Have you decided which you are going to do? What made you make that decision?

I'm really up in the air at this point. I had a vaginal birth with my first and a c-section with my second. My recovery from my c-section was definitely like 10x more painful and difficult. I'm just not sure right now I guess.

That sounds like a great conversation to have with your care team. 👍 It depends on so much, including the reason for your section, how far apart the births will be spaced, any other complicating factors... Without knowing your unique personal situation, and none of us being doctors or midwives, I'm not sure the internet is really qualified to answer that for you. 🤷

  • I am planning for a repeat c-section after discussing with my OB at my first appt. Although it will be 5 almost 6 years since my last one and my scar fully healed, the concern is that the reason for mine was due to DS1 being too high and not coming down so they are worried that my body structure may not be built to get baby out vaginally. I was dilated for weeks and my body had strong contractions so it was doing what it needed but he stayed high and his head started to swell due to being stuck up there. My OB said I could try VBAC but if I end up with the same situation, the chance of infection for another emergency c-section is higher.

I personally really don't want another c-section. I ended up having an emergency C-section with DS because he was in distress due to the fact that I got a uterine infection in labor. I should have an appointment with the obstetrician at my anatomy scan, so I should find out more about my options then.

My concern with a VBAC, is that if I try for one, that the team will so on cautious about it that unless everything in the labor goes perfectly I'll get rail roaded into a section regardless.
  • My doctor said that I would be the perfect candidate for a VBAC.  That being said, I am electing to have a repeat c-section as I already know (more or less) what to expect with regards to recovery.  You have to remember that every person is different and what's best for one isn't necessarily what's best for another.  As others have said, talk it over with your doctor, let them know your worries and wants!

  • Thanks @lachnessmomster. Hopefully it should be ok, I will be going to the leading maternity hospital in the area, and they do recommend a VBAC over a repeat C section in most cases. But I know they put some rules in place that I know don't always have the best outcomes when it comes to section rates. Though really I'll have to see what they say at my appointment.
