Re: UO Thursday 3/5

  • @sunshinesea22 I’ve noticed that at lot of hospitals have changed their admittance policy to 5cm. I wonder if that’s an attempt to get women to labor at home and allow them more freedom in early labor.
  • @rox7777 That totally makes sense. I told MH I plan to labor at home as long as physically possible. He might try to make me go sooner than I want. I have zero interest in being at the hospital in labor for 18-24 hours
  • @sunshinesea22 I'm with you. This country is ridiculous. I eat during labor. I had to get general with my section with my first, and was eating and drinking until an hour before surgery anyway, I did not vomit. It's such a small chance of needing that fast of a section that you'd need general, and such a small percentage of people vomit anyway.

But I birth at home now to get away from non-evidence based practices like that.

My UO- we're pretty free range parents. I don't confine toddlers into play pens or what not. We've made most of our house safe and just lock the cabinets/doors that aren't safe. I'm trying to teach my kids independence from a young age. I'm not saying they're not supervised, but I don't have to be staring at them all the time.

  • @sunshinesea22 Totally agree. I was allowed to eat with my first. I was induced and got an epidural and they never mentioned eating being a problem.

At my new hospital, you "can't" eat once you get an epidural--you can heave clear liquids. I don't know at what point I will get one this time around, but depending on the time of day I'll probably hold off as long as I can. (Last time I got the epi around 10pm which was awesome timing.)

  • The nurse let me eat after I got my epi with DS1 (she wasn't supposed to but was like oh well) my hospital has let up a lot on most of the rules.

I totally agree! My DH and I are struggling because we are working on our birth plan and he wants me to "trust" the Dr more i.e. just do what they say. I argue that I do trust her otherwise we would have found someone else but I also understand from reading that some things are done out of convenience/ ease/ insurance liability for the Dr/ Staff/ hospital more than what is best for my specific labor.

  • @cmhme my husband is the opposite and doesn’t trust doctors at all.  He is telling me I can always say “no” that I don’t have to do what they say and that I can question their recommendations.
  • @sunshinesea22 Definitely agree! I did write on my birth plan with DD that I wanted minimal checks and fetal monitoring (until the epi). They honored that. I was allowed all the freeze pops, Italian iced, and jello I wanted during the first part of labor. Yummy! 😆
  • @jrouge12 Yes! Ice pops (non dairy) are considered a clear liquid. I will be living on ice pops during labor. But I don’t like jello. MH says I’ll like jello when it’s the only thing I’m allowed to eat 😂
  • @sunshinesea22 I'm not a regular jello eater but I was in the hospital laboring for around 10 hours before I got the epi. The jello was a nice mix up to the pops!
  • @cmhme Last time around DH wanted me to trust the doctors more, then he witnessed my health decline and my struggle with regular doctors to listen the last 3 years. This time around he is telling me to trust myself and my body more! It is always good to be educated, just in case you need to advocate for yourself!

@sunshinesea22 Ugh I cannot do jello, although maybe I will make something with my high quality gelatin for during labor. I already planned on bringing bone broth and collagen. I have to double check what my hospital will allow though.
