For baby toys we had a jumperoo last time and probably will not get another one. We didn’t use it enough to justify the huge amount of space it took up!
Longest played with - we have the green version of this. As an infant ds would lay on it and stare at the elephant light up noisy thing, then reach for hanging toy, he still at 13 months plays with the ball pit it converts into. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DCUQ0O4/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_0NSnEb81W9E71
Get black and white high contrast books for the very young age when they can't see well yet. And cardboard, you don't want paper books for awhile. They are hard to turn when you're sleep deprived and have use of one hand, and the baby will just rip the pages once they can get their hand on it.
A jumper is a must we have fisher price rainforest. Ds LOVED the jumper until he learned to crawl and didn't want to be contained.
Socks or mitts or wrist rattles. Once they start moving their hands and legs they find this fun.
Don't spend too much on anything. Other than the matt /ballpit, nothing lasted long.
Make sure things are cleanable. There will be puke. Lots of spit up.
@hayhay2501 when you said jumperoo I thought you meant the bouncy chair that hangs in a doorway. We had one and my son hated it, so I wouldn’t recommend it. I now realize you and @runwmusic are referring to what I know as an exersaucer. My son loved his, but I agree they take up a huge amount of space. Luckily I saved his so we’ll reuse it, but I’d say for new moms to borrow one or buy it used because some kids just don’t like them. We ended up taking ours out on the back porch a lot during pretty weather, but not sure we’ll get to do that with a June baby.
The fisher price rock n play piano was a big hit in our house. An activity mat, jumper, and activity table were all good too. Other than that, maybe a few books, rattles and teething toys and you’ll be set for the infant stage! DS really like the oball toys.
Our Fisher Price kick piano is still going strong. DS1 loved it so much that we broke it down and put it in a duffle to bring on our 4-state road trip when he was 6 months old (I'm west coast, so states are HUGE). After he was mobile, we clipped the toys to his play yard and separated the piano. He still plays with the piano at almost 28 months and I'm keeping an eye on our buy nothing group for a replacement piano because he won't likely give it up for baby brother.
I got a spirally toy that you wind around the carrying handle of his baby bucket seat and that was also a big hit. We moved it to spiraled around all sorts of other things until he outgrew it. It was a surprisingly well spent $10.
We've gone through lots and lots of board books. DS 1 inherited all of his cousins' board books and we did "books instead of cards" at his shower and I have both a low bookcase full of board books and a box of paper pages books for whenever we get out of his destructive reader phase (pro tip, wer aren't there yet). The Usborne That's Not My... series has had great staying power. DS1 loves all the textures and is now practicing the adjectives that go with them.
Stuffies were a total bust for us until after 16 months. But if you need them, make sure they're washable. In fact, most of our favorite baby toys have been through the washer (either clothes washer or dishwasher).
The Fisher Price Sit Me Up! We used that thing a ton. And DS's PT said it was fine because of how the seat was. We had an excersauser but didnt use it much. Took up too much space and DS'S PT didnt like them because of weight bearing too early She felt this way about the push Walker's too. We got rid of the both of those things. Ds had torticolis and was in pt from 3 weeks to about 10 months.
He loved loved loved the activity table from about 6 months on. I got it second had for $15 bucks. I saved it for the next baby too. Baby Paper ( that crinkly stuff) was a huge hit here. Along with the winkle and the stacking tower.
