Egg Retrieval Tips!

Hi everyone! I didn’t see an existing thread for this, so I apologize if I’m creating a duplicate!

I’m progressing towards my egg retrieval date - though it’s not officially scheduled yet, we’re anticipating it could be later this week/early next. If anyone wants to share, I’d love to hear your experience and if you have any tips for recovery. For example, I’ve heard electrolytes and sodium are great ideas! This is my first cycle with IVF and I find that I feel better knowing more information on what I might expect (I know everyone is different though)!

Thank you all!

Re: Egg Retrieval Tips!

  • I had a pretty quick recovery after my ER. I actually went out to dinner with family and had a greasy burger that night. Electrolytes will help. The point is to keep hydrated. When you go make sure you are wearing something comfortable as you'll be a little out of it for the rest of the day. And wear cozy, warm socks!

I was given a Valium before the procedure which really helped calm any nerves I had. But get cozy and take it easy once you get home. I also went back to work the next day like nothing had happened.

  • I also had a quick recovery. Mostly I had a bloated feeling for a day or two. Comfortable clothes that aren’t too tight are my biggest recommendation. I didn’t want anything putting more pressure on my abdomen. I came home and took a nap afterwards, but went out for dinner that evening and was back at work the next day.
  • I had three egg retrievals and the recovery wasn’t too bad. Just take it easy on the day of, and stay hydrated (+ electrolytes) like all the pp said. I went out to dinner with some friends after my first ER since I thought I felt okay, but I started getting cramps during dinner and wished I had stayed home. I retrieved 22 eggs and maybe that’s why? I don’t know. I stayed home after ER #2 and 3 and no cramps with them. I went back to work the next day with all three ERs.

As for hydration, my RE recommended coconut water as a healthier alternative to Gatorade. Even the coconut water was too much sugar for me, so I ended up using this electrolyte drops that you dilute in water. Keep drinking electrolyte water until your urine is colorless. I think I drank about 64 oz a day for about a week or so until I felt normal again.

  • Hi Ritadesign. I had my first egg retrieval 10 days ago. Everything went normally for my retrieval. It was done in the morning. I came home and only needed Tylenol for the pain that day. It took a week for the pain to totally disappear for me but it was minimal. It almost felt like trapped gas in my lower abdomen. I did feel very bloated for about 4 days. I drank a lot of water and coconut water for days. I had some spotting but never bright red blood. Doc told me to not exercise, take baths, or drink alcohol until my period arrives. I will be doing a frozen transfer ASAP, doc is aiming for mid February. Waiting for the embryo test results has been harder than the retrieval. My doc called twice to check on me and now I am just waiting for my period so I can start birth control. 💗💗
