Keeping baby awake long enough to nurse

My two week old sleeps hard. Which is mostly good except that she’s waking every hour at night to basically snack for five minutes and fall back to sleep.

I have tried everything I can think of and read in articles/blogs about sleepy nursing babies. I’ve tickled her, got her naked, changed her diaper, even a cold wash cloth... she is resilient. I’d let her sleep through it but she does wake up crying.

She’s pretty good during the day with two good solid wake periods in the morning and afternoon. Today was the first day that I noticed her not nursing for more than 10 minutes total during the morning/afternoon. She’s gaining weight solidly, so that isn’t my concern.

Anyone else in a similar boat?

  • I am experiencing something similar. I know this was some time ago, how did it go? I am pumping though my LO will sleep all day and be up for about 2-3 hours before sleep during the night. It’s odd though cause she stock ups on milk during the night. I’ll give her 2.5oz and then she wants an additional ounce every hour after. I’m trying to not over feed her or she’ll just throw it up but she is clearly smacking, doesn’t want pacifier and crying that she is still hungry but during the day she is great. I am not sure what to do either cause I try to keep her awake during the day and it’s impossible and I night time I feel like I am just stuffing her to go back to sleep. I’d like to think of it as a growth spur or maybe giving more at one sitting at night. I think it’s all trial and error. I would say if yours is feeding every thirty it’s more of a comfort thing. I know I’m not much help but you’re not alone!
