I'm a FTM in my 2nd trimester and wondering if other experienced moms would recommend the diaper genie. How do you efficiency and effortlessly handle the diaper situation?
Hi @may72020... welcome to the board. I would recommend introducing yourself in the Introductions thread and reading the post titled Read This First. We discourage one-off posts because it clutters up the board, but chances are there’s an appropriate existing thread to post your questions.
To answer this one, I’m a STM and we have the Munchkin diaper pail. I highly recommend it or something similar as they are designed to trap in odor, unlike a regular trash can. We keep it in DD’s room, right next to her changing table, so we can easily dispose of diapers as part of the changing process.
Absolutely not. Still using my simple Dekor diaper pail after 4 years. The only way I could see effortlessly handling the diaper situation would be to hire a full time nanny and never change your child's diapers. 😂 But really, Diaper Genies are totally not needed. You still have to take the diapers out and to the bigger trash eventually.
This post is kinda one off-ish. It may have fit better in Randoms or a Product Spotlight (diapering was a few weeks ago).
You need some kind of trash can made for diapers IMO. Not at first because their poop doesn’t smell right away (at least not typically for BF babies) but once they start eating food...and whew the toddler years. Those smells stick around.

We were gifted one so we’ve used it. The trash bag refills are a little pricey imo but you can buy in bulk on Amazon. And over time (it’s been through 2 kids) it doesn’t totally contain the smell, especially toddler poops so we just throw those in the big trash outside. We’ll probably just use a small trashcan this time around and take it out more frequently
We cloth diaper so we don't have much poop hanging around so don't have to deal with much stink, but we have an Ubbi pail with a reusable liner. I prefer metal because metal doesn't absorb smells like plastic does. My sister had a genie years ago with her daughter and never used it because the refills for the bags were costly and she just decided to through them in the regular trash.
My coworker gave us her old diaper genie when I was ku with DS and I hated it. We tried it for a while, but it didn't trap the odor like it was supposed to and then you had this giant strand of dirty diapers that you still had to take out eventually and it seemed like too much of a hassle. We just take the diapers to the regular trashcan in the laundry room.
TBH, you don't "need" most of the baby stuff advertised. To each their own. We have a genie in the kid's bedroom because my smart-ass dog would get into the trash can and it was an easier solution then walking downstairs every night to the kitchen trash.
