Re: Product Spotlight Series: Skin care

  • My skin care routine is really simple. I shower at night, so in the shower I use a microfiber face cloth to remove my makeup and lightly exfoliate. Then I use some sort of oil as a moisturizer. Right now I'm using almond oil; sometimes I do apricot kernel oil. My routine has simplified more and more, because I'm tired and just don't care that much, haha! Andplusalso, when there was a newborn in the house and I couldn't even rely on being able to get in a full shower, I simplified as much as possible.

I used to do oil cleansing, and sometimes I still do but not regularly. I occasionally use some sort of mask. My skin is somewhat dry, and I don't usually break out, just the occasional pimple. I like trying new products, and someone gifted me a Birchbox subscription once that I really liked, but I just found myself not having the time to try products out like I wanted to. And I hate having cabinets full of *stuff*. I want to have my tried and true products and that's it. Minimalism, Marie Kondo style, whatever.

I had a facial oil that I liked that I was going to start using again, but it isn't being made right now (Amy Karol from the Angry Chicken blog sells it on Etsy). I want a "fancier" option than what I'm using now - relatively speaking! I'm not into paying $80 for a bottle of oil. But does anyone have a recommendation for a clean/green facial oil (no parabens, synthetic fragrance, silicones, other weird stuff)?

  • Oh boy I'm eager to see this thread (hopefully) take off. I've become scared of all my re gular products and to @treeofcheem 's point, after baby, idk how much time I'll want to spend on all of this?

I was sad to see salicylic acid go - I have sensitive, combination, acne-prone skin, and I loved my low-ph cleanser. But I started a new cleanser based on a TB app (pic in spoiler) skins are list and it was an adjustment but my skin has responded to it now. I've added the Mario Badescu drying cream (not lotion) to help spot treat flare ups and it's worked pretty well.

For moisturizer, Burt's bees sensitive skin daily lotion, goes on really light. Also this undereye cream by ole Hendrickson that's "clean" and helps with puffiness and dark circles.

Then at the end of the day, cleanse and remove makeup with simple micellar water wipes

That's it now, but I used to have other stuff - toners, oils, etc. - but I'm nervous to use them now. Curious to hear more routines!

I generally have a simple skin care routine. My skin is DRY.  My main goals are hydration, anti-aging, and keeping my products clean/non-toxic.

Wash my face in the shower at night with a mild cleanser. Right now I’m using the Honest company face wash.

My pre-bedtime routine is mostly about hydrating the crap out of my skin. I switch it up from time to time, but the general gist is an eye cream, face oil, night cream over top. Right now I’m using an eye cream from Derma-e, rosehip face oil, and a Derma-e hyaluronic acid cream. I started using a face roller but I haven’t been very consistent with it. Bonus part of my routine is a hydrating overnight face mask by Paula’s Choice. I use that a couple times a week. It’s a new product to me but I really like it!

Daytime is simple. Splash my face with some water, throw on a moisturizer with SPF. Also using one by Derma-e right now. Apparently I really like that brand right now lol. Depuffing eye cream as well if I’m feeling motivated.

Pregnancy hasn’t changed my skin too much that I’ve noticed. The only thing that’s changed is my level of motivation to sticking with my routine. I’m so lazy anymore!

Really looking forward to what other people use! I kind of love skincare. I turned 30 this year so I’ve been wanting to step it up and keep my face looking semi-fresh 😂

Oh, and it’s not for my face, but I did just splurge on a bottle of Elemis body oil to start using on my belly/hips/etc during the pregnancy. I wanted to treat myself to a bit of a luxury product. Hasn’t come in yet, but the reviews are fantastic.
  • I started using beautycounter lotus cleansing balm when I was TTC and I’ve just stuck with it through pregnancy. I definitely think my skin is drier now and the balm doesn’t strip my skin. I then use an avocado oil lotion before bed.

As much as I like the beauty counter balm, it’s pricey so I’m not sure if I’ll buy again after I’m done. So I’m interested to see what others are using!
  • I'm following this thread for ideas, mainly for after baby comes and I get back into real life. I have never had a good routine or anything you would even call a skin care routine lol. I've had dry skin my whole life, including growing up with pretty bad eczema that I still use a topical steroid for occasionally. But basically my "routine" is at night I use warm water on a paper towel and take off my mascara, then put some lotion on... that's it lol. I don't wear a lot of makeup, just undereye concealer (because my dark circles are terrible), bare minerals foundation and bronzer, and mascara. I use Cetaphil lotion, always have. I guess I'm a creature of habit but I'm also a sucker for expensive skincare shit so I'm definitely interested in some things that could be a good investment for someone with dry skin and a super lazy routine!

And kind of off-topic, but I've had a cold for the past two weeks at least and I have these ugly red bumps around my nose from constantly blowing/wiping my nose. Putting concealer on them somehow makes them more noticeable. Any tips to make them go away other than for spring and warm weather to come??

@meanjellybean we JUST had this discussion on my BMB and one of the girls is crazy about her skin care routine/very knowledgeable about all that stuff. If you want, I'll find the post and share her recs here with you? If not, no worries
  • @meanjellybean here you go! I just copied and pasted her post about it and stuck it in a spoiler
*note: these are NOT pregnancy friendly recs!!

Okay! For those who want to know/try the crazy multi-step process for Korean Skincare, I'm gonna post a few things on here.

First, you don't have to do ALL the steps. On my lazy nights I just cleanse (ONCE), put a serum on, and then a moisturizer. That's it.

On more involved nights, I like to cleanse twice, exfoliate, put an essence on, then a serum, then a face mask, then the moisturizer.

I think through all this, I've discovered that the key is making sure you exfoliate twice a week (once chemically, and once physically..meaning like a scrub). And on nights you only have the energy to do one thing, you should just wash your face and then slather on a moisturizer.

I am VERY BAD about putting stuff on my face in the mornings. I just wash + put on CC cream with SPF.

Also, if you wanna read a great article on this, read this one. And if you have the $$ to buy the products she recommends (I don't), you should. [https://www.manrepeller.com/2019/06/you-look-moist-faith-xue.html](https://www.manrepeller.com/2019/06/you-look-moist-faith-xue.html)

    * she made specific recs for what she uses for each step of the process, but those are separate comments. Let me know if there are any you want links for 😀
  • @meanjellybean side note: this whole thing is from one of the girls I'm planning a wine weekend with for November of 2020 and I'm SUPER excited to not be pregnant so I can do her routine with her and see what I like/don't like and buy allll the things I love lol
  • @blaf322 thank you for posting! Also, at first I thought it said "you have to follow ALL of the steps" and I was like oh come on! Relieved that it actually says the opposite lol.
  • Not completely related, but oh my goodness did you know they make sheet masks for your butt?????

I feel like someone is pranking me, lol. How do you manage to use it? Just stand around naked (or at least pantless) for 10 minutes? There are multiple versions, too! Who knew this was a thing? I do understand the targeting - especially closer to summertime! I just can't imagine ever using one.

  • @meanjellybean haha... fortunately not. She's way more dedicated than I'll ever be about skincare. She did a mask both when we were all drunk on our vacation this past year and, recently, when she got the stomach bug that's going around and was sleeping 20 hours a day lol. I just can't get to that level, but I'd like to do some of it once I'm not pg anymore lol
