Success after IF

If you nursed your baby to sleep....

**disclaimer** I know some people think this is a bad idea...not the point of the post

How do you get them to sleep in their crib?  I want Bright to sleep in his crib during his naps so I can be in my room doing things and not have him sleeping in my bed.  But the switch has turned his 3-4 hour naps into 1-1.5 hour naps.  He just keeps waking up and can't be consoled back to sleep.

Finally if I nurse him in my bed he'll go back to sleep and stay sleeping.

Obviously defeating my original purpose.

So what did you do?

Married on 3.20.2004. It took 30 month, 2 failed adoptions and IVF for our first miracle. We have had 9 foster kids since he was born and started the domestic adoption process when he was 10 month old, we had 4 failed matches in that time. After our daughter was born we brought her home and spent 2 weeks fearing we might lose her because of complications that came up. But Praise God all went through and she is ours forever! Re: If you nursed your baby to sleep....

  • Clearly I don't nurse...haha.  But that doesn't matter bc I use to bottle feed my baby to sleep until she was about 4 months old..it was the ONLY thing that worked and then once she was old enough to CIO a little bit that is when I was able to stop feeding her to sleep.  I say do what you need to do to get a good nap in and also if you are serious about the crib then don't back down....its NOT an easy to habit to break if you don't start him in the crib early...trust me on this one....I would know! =)  GL!

  • I agree...he has gotten used to sleeping in your bed. You are going to have to ease him into his crib. May take a while, but probably needs to be done! I used to let the girls nap in swing, boppy, bouncer etc. and realized that needed to change, I just started putting them in their crib and at first they didnt sleep as long, but they eventually got used to it....they would fuss and cry, and i woudl go in and rub belly and talk to them and insert paci, and they would calm back down and most likely go back to sleep. Consistency is key!! Now the girls take every nap in their crib and in the mornign sleep for about 1.5 hours and in the afternoon they sleep about 2-2.5 hours (mid-day naps are usually shorter).
  • I also do not nurse, but we just started putting Colin in the crib this week. We started there, but with his reflux, I was terrified he would spit up and gag/drown so in to bed with us he came.

His reflux prevents him from sleeping long, but with the transition we went from 3-4 hour stints at night to 2, and his naps went from 2+ hours to 1, if we are lucky. I am just sticking to it. We started the naps a week ago and they are up to 1.5 hours on most days, and I will let you know how overnight goes as time goes on! Good Luck

  • i wonder if the issue is that you have to disrupt him more in order to get him to his crib as opposed to just leaving him in your bed.  i just read a great article the other day about newborn sleep habits - it said that as long as your baby is twitching and making noises like they do when they first fall asleep, he's not really asleep...if you wait about 20 mins he'll go into a deeper sleep (his limbs will be limp and even his face will be still) and that's when you'll be better able to move him without waking him.  i've tried it since and it has worked!
