Holiday Alcohol

Hello everyone!
I hope it's okay I started this thread to have a place to discuss how others are handling the alcohol at social gatherings. Will you say no if offered and hope nobody notices, tell everyone so you don't have to pretend, or accept the drinks as usual and pretend to be drinking (any strategies for this? I've heard of people filling beer bottles with water, drinking the same thing as DH and swapping discretely, just "forgetting" your drink when you move to the next table, etc). I'd love to hear what others are doing!

Re: Holiday Alcohol

  • I'm not ready to tell even my close family. If I turned down all the drinks everyone would immediately know (at least at my family gatherings). I think I'll hope to make some mocktails wherever that is a possibility. I don't have a thorough plan yet. If there is wine I'll probably get a glass, move it from table to table, possibly take it to the bathroom and pour a little out or have DH take a big swig while nobody is looking. Most of our things will have quite a few people so nobody will probably be super closely monitoring my "consumption" lol.

I have been wondering the same thing!  My immediate family will know in a second if I drank water all Christmas Day. My plan is to do fun Christmas-y mocktails. I have bought all of the juices, diet cranberry ginger ale, ginger beer, limes, grapefruit, mint. All kinds of fun stuff for a Moscow mule. I can even make some for others with the vodka. We’ll see how it works. Merry Christmas!
  • We do lots of traveling both Christmas eve and day so my plan is at the first stops to say that we have a long day ahead and I'm driving... I always drive as I hate how hubs drives... and at the second stops I may say I had some champagne earlier and have a slight headache and that I'll hold off for a bit.  We'll see how it pans out.  If nothing else and ppl get insistent later on I'll just say I "just" had one and need water to hydrate bc I'm driving. Lol... good luck to all 🚫🍷

  •  I am pretty stressed about this! We have so many family gatherings and it will be so obvious if I turn down a drink. I'm hoping that no one recognizes my tricks from the last oregnancy. The bottle swap worked well for us though!  When possible I will use a solid color cup like a wine glass tumbler so it's not as obvioud that the wine isn't disappearing.
Also a soda can in a coozy works okay too. Ginger ale looks sort of like beer if you don't look too closely.

  • I don't really drink anyways so people generally don't notice but when someone directly offers me something I always just accept and pretend to sip it.

  • I'm going to a friend's surprise birthday party tomorrow, and it's a bar hop that ends in a big dinner. I'm so stressed, because there aren't a lot of ways to order a mocktail at a bar without our huge group of people noticing. I'm thinking I'll just say I have a headache from the drive (I do have to drive almost four hours there and back), and that I should hydrate. Later on, I can order my "one" drink by sneaking to the bar on my own and just asking for club soda with lime or something. As for the Christmas get-togethers, it should be much easier. I could always just accept a glass of wine and pretend to sip on it or give it to my husband. Ready for the holidays to be over so we don't accidentally spill the beans. Ugh. Good luck, everyone.
  • Pomegranate juice is a great sub in for wine! I brought some to a friends Christmas party and discreetly filled up on my own- no one knew plus it’s super healthy for baby!
  • @desimonstre2020 That's a good idea! I've never tried pomegranate juice. I know grape juice can be substituted for wine but it has a really recognizable smell and gets too sweet for me. I will try the pomegranate juice this week!
  • I'm still trying to figure out what to do. Christmas Eve will be easy to hide, but Christmas day I'm nervous. It's just my parents, mother in law, brother and his wife and my neice and nephew. And of course my husband. I was thinking of telling our parents this week (MIL lives out of state and we only see her a few times a year), but I don't know if I should wait. My emotions got my all over the place!! 😭
  • @lachnessmomster This made me laugh out loud! I feel your pain! This is tough.
  • I either play move the glass around the room and “forget it” somewhere or my husband will make my “drinks” usually a sprite with a splash of grenadine.
  • I've told close family and a few friends already....but you could always say you had a sinus infection or something or say you are on antibiotics for some reason and cant drink

  • @riatortillaxo That sounds HEAVENLY! Really could've used it at my in-laws' Christmas gathering today!
  • @riatortillaxo I might have to try that at New Year's Eve with all my sisters. My only holdup will be not letting them see the non alcoholic beer.  Maybe I could mix it in advance
  • I'm counting myself lucky and unlucky, I'm on too many antibiotics to be able to drink for New Years Eve, so no one will question or push me to have a drop of anything.
