Re: Product Spotlight: Bath Time

  • We have a farm sink so I was able to get a tub that fit in it and had an infant sling for when my son was really small. I liked it ok but didn’t love it. I’m considering getting one of the Angelcare bath supports this time, so I’d be interested to hear from others that have used it. My only tip on soap is that a pump is much easier than a bottle when you’re handling a wet slippery newborn. The main accessory I’d recommend is a hand shower to replace your shower head (if you have a tub/shower combo). It’s so much easier for rinsing them off. A non-slip mat is also a must once they’re sitting up and playing in the tub.

I used the angel care for a long time. Probably longer than I should have but ds stayed laying in it for baths and it made life so much easier! Absolutely no complaints. We now use this mat and it's great. Sticks to the tub just fine. Ds doesn't slide around even when he stands up. I throw it in the washing machine to clean it. Doesn't get much easier than that! Links in spoiler.

+1 for pumps being a must! I started off with aveeno lavender wash and lotion incase of skin sensitivity but use Aldi brand soap these days.

And get a kneeling pad with arm pad for your tub. Absolutely saves your knees. if put a link but I don't like mine. The spacing is goofy and I am constantly moving it around so my arms have a pad when I lean into the tub.

  • I had one of the 4moms tubs that was a hand me down it was meh...DS was super tiny (5lbs) and couldn't even fit in it till he was like 3 months old. Once he was like 4 months old I just started laying him flat in the tub ran like an inch of water in the tub washed him pulled the plug and started the water again and rinsed him off and we never looked back.  I honestly dont even know if I will buy a tub this time, but we will see, maybe a super cheap one.
I loved the honest company bath soap/shampoo with DS, it smells so good!!  We have also used Dove baby which was also fine.  Now he is 4 so we just use Suave kids.
  • We have a cheap tub from amazon. It had an infant sling and we used it next to the sink when tiny, then moved to the tub, then when he could sit by himself I just put him in the tub and got a non slip mat. The one we have is fine, I just ordered it from amazon.

Agree on the mat for your knees. Someone bought me one and I use it every time and DS stands on it when he gets out now so he doesn’t slip.

We were pretty lucky that DS has no skin sensitivity so I can use whatever soap. We were gifted a ton at my baby shower and I haven’t even bought any yet. Babyganics, tubby Todd, Johnson and Johnson, have all been fine for us.
  • Anyone else get sent gone from the hospital with a tub? 🤷🏻‍♀️ We used that and it worked great.

Then we go an inflatable duck tub from amazon that we love and DD loves too (Quack quack!). I’ll attach the picture.

As far as other bath accessories go, something to pour with. We have a cup that looks like a whale specifically for baths. DD also likes that and it doesn’t walk off like other cups to pour with would knowing DH. You’ll probably be gifted towels and I wouldn’t waste money on baby towels. They outgrow them before you make your money back on them.

I love bath toys so we probably have too many of those but there is it. Super excited for some new pipe ones on her Xmas list from Grandma where she can pour the water in herself and let it come out. DD Hayes bath time for the first three months of her life but loves it now.

  • We have that whale thing too! It works great. And also we have a thing that goes over the faucet. Good for older babies otherwise DS would have smacked his head a thousand times.
  • Good call on the spout cover. That is a must once they are sitting in the tub. We have play stack boats that I use to pour water for rinses.

I agree with @alli392 that you will probably be gifted hooded towels. I love them though. Transferring a wet toddler from bath to bedroom is nice to have something with extra cover up.

Boon makes these gears that ds is obsessed with currently. Link in spoie.

  • I haven't loved any infant bath. It being able to hang up on shower curtain to drip dry is nice. my kids outgrow them around 5 months though and aren't ready to sit in tub for a few months. Which is annoying. For our first, it meant that he showered with mom or dad in that period, with other parent on stand by to take baby when clean, so baby is handled while wet parent gets to finish getting clean, then get themselves dry and dressed. Didn't like that method as much with second child, it just all took too long in bedtime rush. So baby bathed with big brother (they still do!) but I physically held her first reclined, then around 6 months held her up while sitting. She didn't get much playtime until she was independently sitting.

We did have a trick for when our oldest was mostly independently sitting, but not 100% yet (he sat late, maybe 9 months?), and put him in a small sound laundry basket inside the tub, so that falls were less far and softer. Obviously I was still right there, but being able to taken hands off of him was a help once he wanted to be down and not showering with adults. My daughter's sitting improved quickly, so we didn't bother.

Considering a Keter bath seat for number 3 for once baby is ready to mostly sit up, because we're hoping to get all three clean in tub at once as soon as baby graduates from tiny tub, and the extra protection sounds good.

We have a cheap suction cup tub grip mat in tub, and a soft thick rug outside it. Oct gets hung to dry every use.

Definitely do some sort of tub spout cover once baby is sitting. Ours is still on. We use regular cups for rinsing kids, but have a handheld shower head for quick empty tub showers for extreme messes.

Soap we can't use Baby Magic or Johnson & Johnson on my son. Nothing else has bothered him. My daughter has had no issues. We were gifted a ton of honest company soap, so I love that, the pump is nice. Next we're trying out the aldi brand Little Journey's, it's a ton of it for less than $2 and I've been happy with their other products. If it makes my son break out, I'll use it.

Most importantly though, we had to go to a proper hair care technique early. My son didn't have hair until he was 2, but by 2.5 baby shampoo and even kids 2-in-1 shampoo/conditioner was over drying to his scalp, which we have bad greasy reactions to. My daughter was born with a full head of hair, we've been able to pony tail it from birth. By 6 months old, I'd given up on baby and kid's stuff for her too. So they're both on curl girl method using a co-wash already. I feel silly, but it works great for us. Just means that they'll probably be 8 ish before they wash their own hair as I don't want their products massively wasted.

  • I used that flower mat for sink baths and it worked fine, my son loves it, but it took FOREVER to dry. More than sink baths we did washcloth wipe downs on messy days (he was a spitter). Both DS and I have skin that dries out super easily from over washing, so he still gets a bath only 1 or 2x per week at 2. From the sink bath we moved to our tub with a parent in (basically I was his tub chair) and eventually to sitting beside the tub with an arm in at all times for speedy rescue. By the time he was18 months, bath = tsunami.

We use the Burt's Bees wash & shampoo and he sits in a super dilute "bubble bath" tub at this point and we just rinse his hair with the bath water. No real reason for this preference beyond we used it at first because it was a gift and DS tells me it "smells like bath" and also "smells like happy." 🤷‍♀️

Kinda bath related: FTMs, don't freak out if your kid has cradle cap. It'll go away. DS had some that took months to fully clear, but you'd never know it now. His was impervious to all the suggested rememdies beyond just flaking off when it was good and ready.

@kyrwyn oh man, I remember cradle cal, I haven’t thought of that in ages. Another of those things that when you first encounter are like, wait, what the heck is this, that turn out to be no big deal.

We have a bunch of the whale items (Moby?) including the tub which had a removable mesh infant sling, the spout cover, the pourer/rinser. All pretty handy and we still use all but the tub at age 2. We are fortunate that J&J doesn’t bother DD’s skin so we didn’t need to try a bunch of different soaps.
