Re: Product Spotlight: Baby Apparel

  • Kimono shirts for the early days! I mostly stick to Carters for little babies. Also FYI gerber onesies are small. But their sleep n plays are big. Rompers are great for the summer. Dresses are more trouble than they're worth until baby can walk.

I like the Carters sets with the onesies and matching pants. I also prefer zippered footed pajamas and sleep sacks for night time use. Sleep sacks are awesome because you can just roll up and change a diaper really quick and then go about your business. I’m not a fan of gerber, it shrinks first wash and never fits properly. We usually stick to carters and cat&jack for baby clothes.
    • Yes! Gerber runs the smallest and Carter I find runs the largest.
    • I did not like the kimono shirts or the sleepers with the bottom open. I preferred the full footed or non footed sleepers, zip or snap were fine.
    • DD lived in sleepers for the first few months. Outfits were pretty useless until she was older, or unless I had a specific event. However she was a November baby.
    • I really loved having the plain white onesies for under the sleepers or outfits. I had long sleeve, short sleeve and sleeveless. I really liked the sleeveless over summer.
    • Socks do not stay on until they grow bigger.
    • Baby shoes are useless... but so darn cute!
    • Spring or early summer garage sales are where it is at for second hand baby clothes. You could also post something in your neighborhood FB (if you have one) asking if anyone has clothes they are looking to get rid of. Keep in mind second hand items tend to run a little small from being washed and worn.
I am not stocking up on anything until sometime next year, most likely will hit up the garage sales in April. I still have all of DD's clothes, although they are the opposite for seasons. Once I find out what I'm having I will go through and see what I should be able to use and have a better idea of what I will need.

  • With DD we got a lot of footie pajamas but she was tall and skinny. The length wouldn't fit but if we went up a size the rest of her was swimming. I ended up having my mom chop of the feet and sew up the hem. Then we only bought her Carters zipper footless jammies for the longest time. For the same reason she was really never in the newborn size.

What baby apparel will you stock up on?
This all depends on the sex. If it's a girl we saved everything. We'll have the monumental task of going through it all though.

Is there an amount you plan on getting?
I prefer having more than you think you'll need. That way if laundry falls behind it's not a big deal.

Favorite types of baby apparel? Simple onesies. DD lived in jammies for her first few months. It was winter and we went no where. I guess this time will be a little different!!

Favorite brands? Carter's definitely. As DD has gotten older she's worn a decent amount of Jumping Beans. All her winter jackets have been Oshkosh bought on super clearance after the season.
  • PSA to the FTMs: when buying sleepers and the velcro swaddles especially, you want ones that zip from the feet up, not from the neck down. It's WAY easier to change MOTN diapers without getting your baby completely undressed.

Now that we're finding out the baby's sex tomorrow (!!!) instead of after Christmas, that changes my clothing game plan a little bit. We have all of DD's clothes in storage, so if it's a girl, I will spend Christmas break sorting through all of it and deciding what I really want to keep, especially given that it'll be a completely different season (May baby as opposed to October baby). If it's a boy, I will basically start shopping for adorable boy clothes on Wednesday, lol. I passed on most of our gender-neutral clothes to my SIL, but especially if we're having a boy, I'm planning on trying to get those things back as her daughter grows out of them.
  • I am trying to figure it out, no matter if this baby is a boy or girl I need basically all new because DS was a Dec in NY baby and this one will be a May in NY which means long sleeves are going to be too hot.
One thing I don't think you can ever have enough of is onesies, so much better when there is a blow out to be able to pull down from the neck and not over the head. But if this baby is a girl I am going to go broke buying all the adorable cute baby girl things.
  • Everything @m6agua wrote. All of it.

I have been stocking up on footie pajamas and white & unisex onesies since summer clothing went on clearance, so we're pretty set on clothes through next summer, no matter if it's a boy or a girl.
  • Has anyone used the Burt's bees clothing?

I'd like to stay with organic, materials for anything we buy new, and I'm told Burt's bees is great, but it also seems expensive.
We're going to avoid buying new as much as we can because like others have said there is so much used clothing available on FB or garage sales.
  • Zippers from the bottom are amazing for night time changes I think old navy sleepers did that along with cat and Jack from target. I also liked the layettes with the open bottoms for night time changes but they're sized 0-6 months so they're really huge for awhile. Have some warm stuff for baby even if they are a may baby. Dd was born the same time this one will be born and I didn't feel comfortable having her out at night because once the sun went down it was chilly. Also we only use AC at night when it's really hot and I didn't feel the sleep sacks kept her warm enough. We would put a blanket on ourselves, but we only had muslin sleep sacks so a lot of nights I would turn the AC off and tell MH he had to deal.

If this baby is a bit we have mostly gender neutral to get us to 3 months then the girly stuff kicks in. So we will need to buy all new boy stuff. I'll also have to go through all the totes and figure out what we have that a boy could wear and toss things I didn't like the first time around.
  • Trumpette socks are the best! Super cute and they do stay on no matter what!

Agree about the sleepers during the early days and zipper direction described above.

  • @jess09lynn I've used some Burt's Bees stuff. It's cute, but nothing special. The material is nicer than some brands and not as nice as others. Kickee Pants are amazing and organic (and bamboo - sp soft!), but they're pricey. However, their onesies stretch a lot, so you get more use out of them.
  • @jess09lynn My sister is all about the organic baby clothes. I would also prefer mostly organic cotton but I know what others buy will probably not be organic, so I’m not like banning non-organic clothes. My sister says the Burts bees shrinks more than other brands and the fabric gets rough with repeated washing. She really likes this brand called 12/12. I’ve bought my nephews some stuff from them, it’s online only. It is pricey but she says the quality makes it well worth the investment, the clothes fit longer and don’t wear out. I know there’s more organic brands out there but I don’t know anything about their quality. All this being said, I also registered for Burts bees organic cotton. Another note: my sister is a wardrobe stylist so quality clothing is sort of her thing. She has pretty high standards, but also is practical as a mom.
  • +1 for kimono onesies (never had them open at the bottom though) and zippered footed pajamas

although we had quite a few snap pajamas and we were fine with it for MOTN changes. We had a little night light and baby always fell asleep after with little problems

  • @jesso9lynn I believe carters has a small organic line for newborns that's very reasonably priced. We have a few burts bees pajamas and they are fine but as others have said - not quiet worth the price (IMO). We shop at a lot of boutique clothing stores that are pricey - but a lot better quality (and much cuter) than BB
  • Link to carters organic. You're right, they are well priced. https://www.carters.com/carters-little-planet

  • @jess09lynn I have some Burt Bees. When I had DD they didn’t really have many options. She had a couple prints and I never saw any others. They were definitely functional but not super cute. Their crib sheets are great, especially since baby’s face will be all over them. I had maybe 4 and they lasted the last 3.5 years and we literally took her out of that bed last week.
  • Thanks everyone for the feedback on Burts Bees and organic. I'll definitely take a look into the recommendations!
  • @jess09lynn I get ads for organic baby clothes on my social media feed pretty much daily...  let me look and see what they say I need to buy today...

    Kate Quinn
    Oliver & Rain
    Monica & Andy

I have not purchased anything from these sites so I cannot speak to the quality or anything, but there's some cute stuff!
  • @pirateduck thanks, I'll take a look at them!
