High hcg but low progesterone?

I had to have my levels rechecked today and while my hcg has more than doubled and is around 1700 at 4.5 weeks, my progesterone came down one and is 14 now, so my dr wants me to start a progesterone supplement. I’m so worried now! Anyone else experienced this?

Re: High hcg but low progesterone?

  • @kristinasmall I haven’t had this happen, but I do take Progesterone myself due to suspected low progesterone. I took it when I was pregnant with my first and I’m taking it again this time. It has a lot of side effects (makes you sleepy, dizzy, etc.) but many people take it during the first trimester and it’s pretty effective. Hopefully it helps increase your levels! I know it’s a stressful time, hang in there!

  • My progesterone has always been low, even with my healthy pregnancies. I've taken progesterone supplements with both my kids and am with this one too. Mine started at 10.4 with this one and 6.4 with my daughter.

  • I was temping and suspected mine was low a few days after BFP. I had my doctor check it and sure enough it was 6.6. She prescribed 200mg to take orally each day and so far it’s gone back up based on my temps. Don’t worry! It’s good you caught it early!
  • I did not know that temping could help you determine if your progesterone is low or not. That’s pretty cool!

  • Yeah, it's the progesterone spike caused by ovulation that actually causes the temp shift. @blackgirlmagic So when you see an lp defect i.e. temps dropping too early, that's because progesterone is tanking early.

With this pregnancy it was wild, I saw a big drop in my temp where my lp would have ended if I were not KU, despite being on supplemental progesterone, which was a little scary, but then it hopped right back up again bc the progesterone didn't actually tank bc pregnant So cool. So if the temps are sitting a little close to coverline, I can see how that could be an indicator it's not high enough. Very cool indeed!

I am still taking Endometrin and will be most likely till 10 weeks just as part of the natural IVF protocol my doctor gave me.
  • With my last pregnancy I suspected low progesterone (already had 2 m/c) and had my doctor test me multiple times. It kept dropping with each test. I think it was down around 7-9 (can’t remember) at about 8 weeks when we started weekly progesterone injections. My HCG was very very high I do remember. I stopped shots at 16 weeks. Have a healthy almost 3 year old girl now. Good you caught it!
