Protesting Floor Time

Dane is really interested in standing (well, me holding him while he stands) and sitting (although he can't do it entirely on his own yet) and wants nothing to do with playing on the floor.  The gymini is boring, if you put him down for tummy time he flips over immediately and me singing, playing games, etc with him on his back only lasts a few minutes before he starts to fuss.

I know that floor time is really important and at this rate he's never going to learn to crawl or even roll consistently from back to belly.

It isn't that I'm obsessed with milestones - I just worry that he's not going to get the right kind of experiences to help his muscles develop, etc.

Re: Protesting Floor Time

  • I know this is much easier said than done, but I really and truly think everything works itself out. Ty hated hated hated tummy time, but managed to roll ahead of schedule and gained great head control early on as well.

Maybe it's time for some new floor toys?

We had two play mats and rotated them (one was a cheaper travel version, but I think the new "scenery" helped keep his interest).

Another "game" you can play is to put him on his back at the edge of a bath towel or blanket and slowly pull it from under him- engaging him in a roll. It will help teach him to roll from back to belly : )

  • Loading the player...
  • Charlie won't tolerate much tummy time and doesn't roll except to his sides and his Pedi said last week that it isn't a developmental issue since he can sit very well by himself.  He advised me to relax about the timeline and order in which he decides to learn new things.

It's nerve wracking though isn't it?

That towel trick sounds interesting, we'll have to try it!

No help here, other than maybe a more interesting gymini??  J's always loved playing in his, so I'm no help.  He does the tummy quick roll too, I'm worried about how he's going to learn to crawl as well.  I'll be checked back for answers too :)

  • Ok, ok...I'll try to stop stressing out.  I'm also just at a loss about how to play with him at home since he doesn't want to be on the floor.  He likes the exersaucer and the doorway jumper but I don't want him in them all day and I don't get to interact with him.

April, I'll have to try that blanket game.  Thanks!

  • Balls are great floor toys.  Do you have an O-Ball (it is made of soft plastic 'webs' so baby can grab on very easily)?  If you are close to a Day One location (I am sure they sell them other places too), they have O-Balls, as well as these rubber balls with texture on them so they are easy to grab.  When N first started rolling we played with balls all the time and she went nuts for them.
