Happy Veterans Day! Among many family members across all branches, I’m thanking my husband for his 6 years with the Navy. I think we might go to BWW for their free boneless wings meal tonight.
This photo is from the day he returned from his 3rd and final deployment. Feels like a lifetime ago!
Is anybody else thanking any veterans in their life?
I am remembering my grandfather, who spent 2 years as a chaplain in the US Navy before immigrating to Canada. Also many other friends and family members who have served /are serving our country in defence of freedom.
I am thanking my husband. He was a marine officer for 4 years and in the reserves for 4 years. He did one deployment to Afghan while I was in veterinary school and he got out of the marines 5 years ago. We live a totally different life now (thank god- TBH I hated the military lifestyle and probably would not have married my DH if he had planned on staying in) but it will always be a part of our story.
Thanks to all those who serve, have served, or have a member in their family who has done either. Y’all are the best.
I thought I’d have an easy day today because maybe a lot of offices would be closed for Veterans Day. Not true. Everyone seems to be working and, therefore, flooding my inbox.

Wow so many veterans! Thank them for their service.
I had a girls weekend away and it was so nice to relax and just be away. I have today off, daycare is closed, H took the day off so we are just trying to get stuff done around the house.
One of my coworkers has been clearing her throat every 2 mins for the last couple days. I am not exaggerating. It doesn't seem to do anything and it is driving me nuts, NUTS
I got some updates about my cat. He went for his follow-up visit last Friday and his blood glucose had skyrocketed since last May. He is now on insulin. This is causing me stress because I hate needles and I have to inject him twice a day. He doesn't seem to mind so that's helping. Vet is suspecting it might be cancer because he is too old (almost 18) and too skinny to be developing diabetes now. I went again today and his blood sugars were even higher so we're increasing the dose of insulin. I will also have to test him with a glucose monitor this weekend. If playing with insulin doesn't seem to work, we'll do an ultrasound to see if he has a tumor on his pancreas or bowels. I also had a very stressful day at work last Friday and I had to keep monitoring the situation over the weekend. It is finally under control. And finally, for some reason, calculating how to lay the new floor is stressing me out. The room is L-shaped + there is a hallway. I feel like I need to know some advanced math formula to make sure I won't have 1" planks against the walls. Manufacturer says the minimum should be is 3". This sounds silly but it is causing me anxiety. Needless to say, I woke up at 4:30AM and was unable to fall back asleep.

@rikiteacup Oh man! So sorry about everything! Maybe throw something at your coworker? And hope that insulin works for your cat! That's a bummer that work has been stressful! Flooring is tough but you got this and it will look great!
@rikiteacup Oh man, so much on your plate right now! I bet you're doing an amazing job giving your grandpa kitty his insulin I hope everything smooths out for you soon.
On my mind: has anyone done a custom framing/shadow box thing for their wedding invitation or other sentimental stuff? I am the least sentimental person possible but I forced myself not to toss our wedding invite/etc while cleaning in the basement but now feel obligated to do something with it. I'm not at all crafty enough to put one together myself but have been poking around Etsy for possibilities.
@Swiftlet I used some of my leftover invitations to make Christmas ornaments. I cut the invites into thin strips, used a chunky crochet needle to curl the strips, then put them into a plain ornament from Michaels. Added a pretty ribbon, a ring charm, and voila!
As for the rest of my wedding sentimental items, I actually used a family curio cabinet and made a display. We have a weird little corner leading into our bedroom and it worked out perfectly for us! Sorry, the pic isn’t the best
@Swiftlet do you mean building the box or how to arrange items inside the box?

@taylor2020 wow, that is a great idea and it looks fantastic. If I were rich and lived in a mansion with a 200+ sq.ft. WIC, I would get a seamstress mannequin and display my wedding dress.

@rikiteacup sorry you are going through so much right now. I would totally do the passive aggressive move with your co-worker and ask if she needs a cough drop or a drink.
@Swiftlet Etsy is a good place to start but I would try Pinterest too because you might find some inspiration there as well.

Today I'm remembering my father (Navy), father-in-law (Navy), grandfather (Navy), two uncles (Navy and Marines), and a cousin (Air Force). (It runs in the family.) Last year around this time I was fortunately enough to get the opportunity to visit Iwo Jima and climb Mt. Suribachi. My grandfather's ship was there for the battle and while he never stepped foot on the island, I like to think he was there in spirit for the climb.
I think pregnancy hormones are making me a bad decision maker. When my oldest(7) came home yesterday and told me the kid that has been bullying him started a fight with him my tired fed up brain instantly wanted to tell him that next time punch the kid hard enough to knock out a tooth, but mommy reasoning took over and vomited out the ol' tell a teacher, use your words, try to avoid this kid if possible. But my brain kept screaming that if my son pulverized this kid that maybe he would back off.
@sassypants2010 I can’t blame you. I come from a culture of “we don’t start fights but we’ll finish them” though... so I might have skipped straight to that.
@um_thor I was raised to not get walked all over but to try to resolve peacefully first. My husband on the other hand is definitely scrappy and is struggling with the urge to teach our son how to fight because this kid is a real prick. It's an added pain in this case because my son has ADD so behavior stuff is already an issue we're trying to work on. But I am on the verge of snatching his momma bald for raising such a cretin(again I am the peaceful parent so this is out of character).
Woooo this mama has been approved to be done with bed rest!! I get to go back to work on Friday! My midwife said just no heavy lifting, and I’m not allowed to do any first-assisting in csections due to how hard we pull retractors, and the strength needed to push babies out of the uterus.
@sassypants2010 We are bad parents, but DH and I ask "did you tell the teacher?" and follow up with "well if she doesn't do anything then push them back". DS is super small so I don't want him getting pushed around.
I do always wonder if we're the last people in the world at a birthday party telling our toddler "well push them back then..." Seems like maybe we are lol.
@craftywitch I told him last night that self defense is acceptable but only if the teacher option had been used. He just gets so flustered with thinking the teachers won't do anything and my hands address tied since I can't go beating up 1st graders. I doubt you're bad parents, my son is small also which is part of why I want to just tell him to go feral if no one is doing anything(besides making both write apology letters, eye roll).
@rikiteacup ugh I’m sorry about all of that. My old manager has a throat clearing issue, almost like a tic, and it gets worse when he’s stressed. It’s so annoying!
I’ve been home all day with DS because he had a fever last night. But it appears to be gone and he has a slight cough, and that’s it. He’s definitely going back to school tomorrow. Of course DH is out of town too.
We’ve been bingeing on Disney Plus today!

@ibabyloveb87 weird, that’s exactly what happened with DS1 Sunday night! He had a lower fever (100.0) Sunday evening. When I checked on him at 10:00 while he was sleeping, he was completely drenched in sweat so I moved him to a dry spot on the bed. Monday morning it was still 99, but was done by 9:00. Then no other symptoms 🤷🏼♀️ So he went back to school today.
@ibabyloveb87 I spent the day binging Disney plus with a sick kid too. Mine has had a cold for a few days but woke up with a high fever and has been miserable most of the day. Fever comes back when the Motrin wears off so no preschool tomorrow and more Disney binging. Glad he seems to be feeling better
I am catching up from a not so fun weekend. We brought my car in for a diagnosis and ended up having to leave it for $2k in repairs. Our heat in our house isn't working properly and then DD came down with croup. We cancelled all plans on Sunday including our family pictures and my Mom's birthday celebration. We kept DD home Monday and today. With all this chaos going on, half the time I don't even remember I am pregnant. Makes me miss being able to be so in tune to my 1st pregnancy with DD.
My random is that last pregnancy (Dec due date) I did not need to buy a pregnancy coat so this time I was like oh I can just wear the coat open. I didn't think about the fact that three months of cold is a lot longer than 1 month of cold, and that I would be bigger this time around. It was 19 degrees this morning and I left the house in a fleece!
@zseirecarg this pregnancy is so different for me too, but i never felt "in tune" with my daughter either. I don't know if its a defense mechanism but I haven't been able to really get attached to either until they get here.
@sassypants2010 I have the opposite issue, my daughter is a tattle-tale and it drives me NUTS. "Mommy, the cat is eating my doll's hair!" - well don't leave it on the floor!!! Sigh.

@zseirecarg, what a weekend! Hope your daughter is feeling better. I hear you on how different pregnancy feels this time around too.
@leksiL, I borrowed a friend's maternity coat. I was just going to tough it out but I realized DD is going to want to be outside when it's cold so that wasn't going to work.
Oh my gosh! I've been feeling baby girl kick more from the outside this week and it is amazing! She kicked me twice last night and I grabbed Hs hand and put it on my belly and she stopped. So he moved it and she kicked again. So he wasn't able to feel her powerful movements but he did feel her moving a little, just in time for his birthday today!
I got a maternity coat last pregnancy from motherhood. Winter lasts forever here and my regular coat doesn’t zip anymore. Maybe there will be some good sales with Black Friday coming up?
Well I’m a bit horrified. I toured a daycare facility (DS1’s daycare only does 2-5) because I heard good things and their prices are reasonable. The 2nd room I saw, for older infants, I only saw one infant and one provider. She was sitting in a rocking chair on an electronic device, using her foot to “rock” the infant in one of those bouncy rocker chairs. But she wasn’t even looking at the child and was bouncing her so hard and fast that her head was coming off the chair.
When I went to talk with one of the directors I informed her of what I saw. She assured me she would be taking care of it. But it still freaked me out. What if I hadn’t been touring and didn’t see it? Would anyone know? What else does she do when she thinks no one is looking?
