?s about travel w/ newborn

We are going to Green Bay, WI for my cousin's wedding in July.  Ray San will be almost a year, but technically 8.5 months.  Since he is our first, I don't know what to pack for him.  I know the diapers, wipes, food, clothes essentials.  What I don't know is the swing, pack n play, stroller, etc. type items that are necessities.  Also any advice to make the airport easier and more manageable for us, especially since we have to change planes.

TIA!

Marcie

Re: ?s about travel w/ newborn

  • I traveled with DD when she was around that age for a wedding.

I had my dad pick up diapers for us, to save space. I was still bf'ing, but I wasn't pumping, so I took 8oz cans of premade formula, so I didn't have to go throught he hassle of mixing the formula. If I did use powder, I always used bottled water because water always taste different when you travel. I used the hotel crib (ICK!) so I would suggest bringing your own sheet and maybe a blanket to cover up the pad.

I did check her carseat, and traveled with DD on our lap. Honestly, she slept for most of the plane ride, so it was not bad. I gave DD a little Motrin before each take off just to help with any pain she might have in her ears.

  • Who are you flying with? We have traveled with DD by air once and by car (long drives) twice now. One big tip for flying is to let them know when you check in that you have a lap infant. (Assuming you didn't buy Ray San a ticket) They can take a look and see if they can get you your own row. We flew Alaska and they did that both ways. We brought DD's car seat right onto the plane with us but they can check it at the gate for you. It ended up being a lot easier than I thought it would be. They can also gate check the stroller. We did not bring her p&p, swing or any of that other stuff. It would have been way to much. We just co-slept. There were so many people wanting to hold her that the swing wasn't an issue either.

We did bring all that stuff when we drove though. In the future I don't think I will. It's just SO much stuff.

  • A Travelmate (if DC is in a convertible car seat.) A good soft carrier. DC will most likely be pulling up and crawling by then (or very close to) so you don't need a lot. Just a place to sleep, hotels have cribs, co-sleeping, or rent a crib on the other side.

  • Oh, when you book the plane, get a window and an aisle seat towards the back of the plane. A single middle seat in the back is the last to go.   So then you might get a whole row.   Plus, call the airline and tell them you're travelling with a lap kid.  Sometimes they can put a hold on the extra seat.   And if someone does take the middle seat, they'll have no objections to switching to the window or aisle for you.

  • Hey Marcie!  We traveled with hannah when she was 11 months old.  I would just pack the amount of diapers that you would need for two days.  You can buy more when you get there, ditto on the food, too!  I bet he'll be fine without a swing for your trip.  Hannah didn't need it by that age.  You may want to bring your pack 'n play, or consider getting a cheap one at a garage sale that you can leave behind at the hotel.  Or, you could see if the hotel has a portable crib/PNP, but just bring your own sheets from home, just cause you never know how clean those things are.

We brought our own stroller and car seat.  I've heard car rental car seats can be really gross, and I thought that would be one thing that was familiar to DD.  I checked both of those items at the gate.  You'll pick them up when you get off the plane.  I figured it had less chance of getting damaged that way.  (I'm sure there's no truth to that, as we lost the lock on the stroller (thta keeps it closed)...Anyway, I liked having the stroller in the airport as it has a big basket to carry our carryons.  I also carried DD in a sling, so that we could load the seat on the stroller, too!  I also lugged the carseat to the plane on the off chance that there might be an extra seat that we could put DD in.  But, alas, there wasn't.  And likely there won't be for you in July, but maybe with this economy there will be??

  • If you are renting a car, don't get a car seat from the car company. I did this twice. The first time, they installed the car seat wrong. The second time, there was no car seat! We waited for almost an hour for them to show up with a car seat, and then they didn't have all the pieces to install it right. Luckily, I had the seat belt clip in my diaper bag, or else we would have been SOL.
