Nurseries and Baby Gear

When shoud I set up the nursery?

I have so much to do to get the nursery set up - remove wallpaper, paint, install new lighting, get furniture, get accessories, etc. How far along in my pregnancy should I get the ball rolling on this.  I'm eager to start sooon, but am only 11 weeks along, so I know now would be too soon.

Re: When shoud I set up the nursery?

  • Even though you're still early on I would think its never too early to tackle that wallpaper, that looks to be the most difficult and time consuming on your list.  And while you still have the energy I would def start with that soon.

As far as the other stuff I have all my furniture but just picked a paint color today, so thats where I'm at, at 29 weeks.

  • I don't think there is such a thing as "too soon" when it comes to the nursery.  It's not like it's a carton of milk that's going to go bad!  I kind of think the earlier, the better.  That gives you plenty of time to order furniture, if necessary, and make decisions without rushing.
  • Dive in!  I have two rooms planned out and I am just waiting to find out the sex to start gathering stuff.  I have bought the rocker for the room and slip cover so far.  I think this stuff always takes longer than you anticiapate. Plus wallpaper is never fun.  Once a month I am trying to buy a big ticket item to help spread the expense out.  Next month is the crib!! Can't wait!!
  • Yeah... I was of the thought that I had alllll the time in the world... Plus I was a little superstitious and figured I'd wait until my mid-20s (weeks) to really get cracking.

What a mistake.... Painting/cutting in at 28w, when it was 80* out, ordering furniture with a 10-12w delivery lag (it arrived 2w before baby), not getting clothes and supplies put away until 38-39w.... Ugh. I'm STILL putting the finishing touches on the room.

If we ever have another, I'll be starting the nursery as soon as I hit the 2nd tri.

    GL to you- enjoy!

  • I agree with the other ladies.  We started right after the big ultrasound and we are actually finished with the room (painting, setting up crib..etc.)  We have so much other stuff to accomplish, like getting organized and making room in our townhouse.  I am so glad we started early.

I would start removing the wallpaper asap!

  • We just finished painting and putting all the furniture together this week, we emptied the room and closet a few weeks back, but start slow -- remove a little wallpaper everyday so you don't get overwhelmed, you have plenty of time, but it goes by so fast! good luck
  • Since you have wallpaper to deal with in addition to other modifications, I'd get started as soon as you feel up to it.  I wouldn't buy furniture or bedding or anything until later on.  I'm 29 wks. pg and we're just getting the room painted this week.  I have the bedding and will pick up the crib later in the week as well.

  • It's not too early to start stuff like painting, lighting, etc.

My DH painted last weekend and we are having the carpet installed this Monday. We are hoping to have a friend install a ceiling fan soon and DH will work on making some shelving for the closet and putting up more bars, etc. We ordered our furniture but don't expect it to be in until April, so I figure we'll have everything set up by the beginning of May which will work out well for shower timing (I think) and putting away clothing, etc.

If you have a lot to do before you would actually set up the furniture, it's best to get it done soon. Most furniture takes about 8-12 weeks to come in.

  • We ordered the furniture after the big u/s at 20 weeks and we just painted the room two weekends ago, I was 28 weeks. We still have to decorate the walls but then we are done. We also have to order our glider. If you have as much stuff as you do, I would go ahead and get started.
