So my OB's office has a midwife now and I guess he (OB) is really only seeing high risk patients at this time (they said I will see him again closer to my due date), for those of you who have a midwife or have gone from OB to midwife can you let me know what (if any) differences I should expect. I really love this office they were great during my first pregnancy when I had a lot of issues but it never crossed my mind that he saw me every time because I was high risk.
@mamaj1220 I had both midwives and OB during my appts because they rotated. The appts were never different, and I think the midwives sometimes had better bedside manner when it came to pregnancy symptoms honestly. But that I’m sure depends on the person more than midwife vs OB.
@mamaj1220 for my previous pregnancy I saw my regular OB for all prenatal appointments, but a certified nurse midwife actually ended up delivering my daughter. I love my OB, but she didn’t deliver at my hospital (I have Kaiser and all the OBs have an on-call system rather than patient based for deliveries). I actually loved having the CNM do the delivery... she had great bedside manner but was also still super knowledgeable about the medical side of things. In fact, she had a medical student with her for the delivery (I agreed to it) and had her assist as well. I literally only saw the on-call OB for the last 5 minutes of pushing (after almost 3 hours). We’re going to go the same route this time.
@mamaj1220 I had a CNM with DS and DD. She was amazing! She had a ton if experience, was very knowledgeable and practical, and super down to earth. She handled my labor and attended my eventual c-section with DS (not her fault, he was sunny side up and couldn't fit through my pelvis. She let me go 27 hours before we had to do a c-section because of meconium.) A different CNM handled DD's delivery and she was fine too. This will be my first pregnancy with an OB, and I feel exactly the way you do - just reversed.
We have five rotating OBs at my current office, but a CNM handles appointments until until the last trimester unless you’re high risk. Honestly our CNM is great, she’s very knowledgeable and answers any and all questions we might have for appointments. I’m 13 weeks and we’ve already gone over my options for VBAC and tubal litigation and I feel pretty good about the information she’s given me thus far.
Thank you all! I am just nervous because I love my OB and he was so good with me the last pregnancy that I just expected to be with him again, though I have to say I was kind of excited that he was like “everything looks great so I don’t think you need me yet”. @ruby696 that makes me feel better about delivery too! Last time it was just him in his office so I knew that unless I made it to a night/day he was on call I would have someone I didn’t know, the other doctor was great during delivery but I felt a little worried because I didn’t know him so I think having the option with the new CNM at his practice is nice for me.
