UO: I am going to Palm Springs for my annual trip with some of my girlfriends. We always eat at this amazing sushi place, and I will more than likely have a few bites of raw sushi. My UO is that I think the rules for pregnancy in the US are too restrictive (not with alcohol, but with food and medications).
UO: I don't think the office is funny. And honestly, mean girls isn't that spectacular either. I don't hate either piece of media, but I just think they're waaaay over hyped.

@jenEP, 💯 agree with you, and my OB does too. There are serious benefits to eating fish (that aren’t high in mercury), and the main worry (parasites) is totally overblown — almost all sushi is flash frozen, which kills parasites. Also, yes, food poisoning sucks, but it doesn’t hurt baby — and if you’re not eating gas station sushi, that’s low risk too. Way riskier to eat chicken. Emily Oster did an amazing job breaking down the risks vs benefits in Expecting Better. Enjoy it, guilt-free!
@pdx2020 I want to read that book! I have heard good things, though I have worked with some Fetal Alcohol Syndrome specialists who disagree with her assessment of the research on alcohol consumption during pregnancy. I've heard you're much more likely to get sick from lettuce or chicken than raw fish! I will enjoy my sushi!
UO: I am all about protecting the environment and reducing single use plastics, but I think the whole straw ban thing is silly. I feel like there are hundreds of other ways we can make a positive impact on the earth, and some disabled people really depend on plastic straws.
It just seems silly to focus on that one arbitrary thing when EVERYTHING we use is plastic.
@kantobean but straws get trapped in the nose holes of sea turtles
What do you mean some people with disabilities depend on plastic straws? Could they not use metal straws or silicone straws instead? Legitimate question bc I don’t know about it. I know my dad needed to drink thickened water through a straw when he was in hospice, but my guess is he could have used a metal straw if we had known about them a decade ago.
@silverhope I personally support a plastic straw ban in the sense that they’re only available by request (not the default). But some folks with disabilities can’t use a metal straw because they can’t control their bite very well, if that makes sense. Using the metal straw could be painful or dangerous. Additionally, there’s a great argument for not perpetuating an idea that folks with disabilities should have to accommodate themselves in order to do normal things like eat at a restaurant, for example.
@stassischroeder I totally agree, I enjoy lurking on 1st tri to see some of the crazy!
@kantobean I agree, I mean I don’t necessarily think reducing straws is bad bc they are wasteful but to me it seems like it’s not actually fixing anything major rather it’s just making a bunch of people feel good like they are fixing the environment. It’s like at DH’s work they had a bunch of safety issues with people getting hurt on the job for various reasons (slipped in the icy parking lot, ergonomic related injuries, etc...) so they banned using cell phones while walking. Not a single injury was due to this though you can see how walking and texting can be dangerous but they got that bullet point up for company headquarters on how they are addressing the safety issue. Straws seems similar, it’s too hard and there are too many things that actually need changed so let’s just pick one tiny one and make it our thing so we feel good and have our bullet point...

@silverhope what @orbmaker said. There was actually a woman with a disability who died earlier this year impaling herself on a metal straw. They aren’t safe for all people.
I am all for reducing their use but I think bans are short-sighted and ableist. Plus, why not ban things like those plastic rings around soda cans, which strangle birds? I just think it’s arbitrary what gets banned.
