  • @stassischroeder I make sure to check out that board at least once a day, just to see what shenanigans are going down!  :D
  • UO: I don't think the office is funny. And honestly, mean girls isn't that spectacular either. I don't hate either piece of media, but I just think they're waaaay over hyped.

@pdx2020 I want to read that book! I have heard good things, though I have worked with some Fetal Alcohol Syndrome specialists who disagree with her assessment of the research on alcohol consumption during pregnancy. I've heard you're much more likely to get sick from lettuce or chicken than raw fish! I will enjoy my sushi!
  • Damn people now I really want some sushi!

UO: I am all about protecting the environment and reducing single use plastics, but I think the whole straw ban thing is silly. I feel like there are hundreds of other ways we can make a positive impact on the earth, and some disabled people really depend on plastic straws.

It just seems silly to focus on that one arbitrary thing when EVERYTHING we use is plastic.
  • @kantobean but straws get trapped in the nose holes of sea turtles  :(

What do you mean some people with disabilities depend on plastic straws? Could they not use metal straws or silicone straws instead? Legitimate question bc I don’t know about it. I know my dad needed to drink thickened water through a straw when he was in hospice, but my guess is he could have used a metal straw if we had known about them a decade ago.

  • @silverhope I personally support a plastic straw ban in the sense that they’re only available by request (not the default). But some folks with disabilities can’t use a metal straw because they can’t control their bite very well, if that makes sense. Using the metal straw could be painful or dangerous. Additionally, there’s a great argument for not perpetuating an idea that folks with disabilities should have to accommodate themselves in order to do normal things like eat at a restaurant, for example.

  • @silverhope what @orbmaker said. There was actually a woman with a disability who died earlier this year impaling herself on a metal straw. They aren’t safe for all people.

I am all for reducing their use but I think bans are short-sighted and ableist. Plus, why not ban things like those plastic rings around soda cans, which strangle birds? I just think it’s arbitrary what gets banned.
  • @kantobean that’s awful about the woman dying bc of a metal straw. I had no clue about this.
