@manders9479 - I follow the Curly Girl Method, so no sulfates, silicones, or drying alcohols in my products, and no brushes or heat.
Shampoo - Not Your Mother Naturals pink Conditioner - currently Generic Value Products conditioning balm, but just for the summer. The rest of the time I use Garnier Avacado Mask. It has too much glycerin for the summer. Stylers - Kinky Curly Curling Custard with Aussie Instant Freeze gel layers over top
Routine: After shampooing, detangling, and conditioning my hair, I do a method called "squish to condish", which is basically flipping my hair upside down and scrunching the conditioner into my hair for 60 seconds. I have way rinse out and leave the rest in. Then I dry slightly with a soft t-shirt, still leaving my hair damp. I apply my custard and gel using praying hands to smooth any fly aways and then scrunch all that in upside down for 60 seconds. Then I tie it up on my head with another soft t-shirt and plop like that for a few minutes (usually while I'm brushing teeth and stuff). Then I diffuse upside down for 10 minutes, long enough to get my scalp dry and air dry the rest of the way. If I still have a little bit of gel crunch when it's completely dry, I flip my hair over and do the scrunching motion to break up the gel "cast". A wash and style usually looks good with a quick refresh in the morning for about 4 days, and I make it last 7, cuz this mom is busy!
Sorry about the novel! It's just taken me years to understand my hair.
@marebear15 my hair does not hold an artificial curl for more than an hour after its done but dd has natural almost ringlet curls & i have no idea what to do with it most of the time which makes me sad cause its so beautiful when its freshly washed.
@leprechaunlady - How old is your daughter again? A lot of the Curly Girl Method is about techniques, not just products, but there are some kid's lines! I would throw away the brush and only ever finger comb with some conditioner to get any tangles out. A spray bottle with some water and conditioner can help regain those curls after a good night's sleep. And depending on how fine your daughter's hair is, you could also use a little bit of gel or curling custard, again mixed with water on your hands and scrunch that in to keep the curls all day. J&J just came out with a good curly kid's line that has a shampoo and a leave in conditioner. Shea Moisture and I think Cantu also have kid's lines. My DD doesn't have curls yet, but I'm still holding out hope because I didn't get my curls until I hit puberty.
@leprechaunlady I know some other curly moms also suggest getting a satin or silk pillowcase for their kids (and themselves) to help reduce knots and frizz!
@marebear15 shes 2.5. My mum really spends time to enhance her curls when shes had her hair washed at their house & I scrunch it to define them a bit when im drying it after ive washed it. I use a leave in conditioner spray every day before i brush it but during the week when were in a rush im the mornings i usually just put it in pigtails so its out of her eyes & not annoying her all day.
Definitely ditch the brush! Only finger-comb her hair when it's soaking wet with conditioner! But her hair is super cute!! Keep her routine super simple. Adults can go overboard with their curls and kids won't appreciate that LOL!
@leprechaunlady - Oh she's got the best curls! I agree with stashattack. Keep it simple and let her be a kid. Gel it for special occasions, but other than that, just keep it healthy with a nice balance of protein and moisture.
