What sleep surfaces did you use previously? Will you use them again? We used the lotus travel bassinet for the first 8-9 weeks in our bedroom and then moved him into his crib. I love my lotus since we go on vacations and to in laws a bunch and it is lightweight and travels easily. We will easily be using it until he is like 2 or 3. For cribs I didn’t go with the popular 3 or 4 in one meaning they go from a crib to a toddler bed to a headboard/footboard of a normal sized bed. For me our decorating style of the rooms may change so much between infancy and when this kid is 14 so I didn’t want them stuck with the same bed they had at birth. Plus some kids are bar chewers. We got the baby key to which is a crib that turns into a toddler bed. When he’s 4 or 5 we will get him a real bed.
Any size restrictions in the room? No. Our rooms are huge.
Favorite travel sleep surface? Lotus! But we used t as his primary sleep the first 8-9 weeks
Any tips? For cribs but what you like. Just remember bumpers and even the mesh bumpers are not recommended for safe sleep spaces
What sleep surfaces did you use previously? Will you use them again? Baby box and a convertible crib and we will use them again. I love our convertible crib that is a dresser, changer, crib, toddler bed, and eventually head/foot board. We actually used the changer on it daily and stored cloth diapers on the side shelves, and DS is using it until he upgrades for the new baby to have it.
Any size restrictions in the room? The room baby and DS will share is small, but it will fit a twin and crib so we're kind of leaning toward that now because the bunks we looked at were all kind of high and not recommended for toddlers.
Favorite travel sleep surface? We travelled a handful of times with DS under a year and never brought anything. He slept on a folded up blanket on the floor when we travelled- mountains, visiting family, Iceland for 10 days...
Any tips? Less is more. Nothing is safe in a crib or sleep space so a fitted sheet is all you need (and all that's allowed for safety). Also if you are interested in a baby box, check to see if your city/state provides them free. Ours does and it's awesome!
We’ve been considering using the PacknPlay as our infant sleeper, though the box idea interests me too. I was looking at the most basic that has a bassinet and then regular “pen” at the bottom. My thought was use the PNPs in our room then transition them to cribs later, while still being able to use the PNP (around the house, travel, etc). Thoughts welcome!
@Swiftlet if you plan on traveling normal PNPs are kind of a PITA to fold/travel with. If you are gonna use a PNP I recommend getting one that’s specifically make for travel since they are lighter weight and tend to fold easier/smaller.
Crib: We got a convertible 4-in-1 so it turns into a toddler bed, day bed, and full sized bed. My only complaint is that there are 3 levels for the mattress but the lowest one still isn't low enough to keep my tall kid safe. Also, the front is a lot lower than the back which made it not safe for her when she got too tall. We ended up turning her crib around so the lower front side is now against the wall and the higher back side is facing the room. Doesn't look good but allows us to safely keep her in the crib longer. My advice: Make sure all sides of the crib all tall and that the mattress can drop to the ground or close to it. H and I aren't tall so we never expected to have a kid in the 90% for height who quickly was too tall to be safe in the crib.
Travel Crib: We have a Baby Trend pack and play. It folds easily and isn't that heavy. We got one that also has a flip up changing station and a removable bassinet. We used it downstairs with my daughter as an additional changing space and safe place to put her down. We tried to use the bassinet portion to have her sleep in our room but she hated it.
My daughter slept in a Rock and Play for 3 months. I knew they were not considered safe and did it anyway. Sleep deprivation is no joke. This time around I won't use them but am anxious about how baby will sleep in the bassinet or pack and play.
So, as a short person, a lot of cribs have sides that are too high for me to reach over comfortably, even on the highest setting (like, the edge digs into my rib cage or upper abdomen). There were some at BBB that worked, but my husband suggested buying a second crib mattress to stack on top of the first to “raise” the bed level up a little more. Is that safe? I don’t see why not but figured I’d ask!
What sleep surfaces did you use previously? Will you use them again? We used the Arm's Reach Co-Sleeper Bassinet which was very helpful. I wanted to be as close to the baby as possible without sleeping in the same bed and this worked well. It attaches to your bed, although for the most part we left it unattached because I also rolled it into our bathroom so I could take a shower while baby slept. After 4 months, we transferred my daughter to her full-size crib in her nursery. She's currently still sleeping in that crib (turned 2 in late June), but we'll eventually move her into a toddler bed before this little one arrives.
I'm not sure if I'll use the Arm's Reach again. We've since upgraded to a king size bed, so now I'm thinking about an in-bed co-sleeper. I'm hoping this one will do better with breastfeeding and I imagine it will be easy to grab her out of the bassinet if it's in the bed with me.
Any size restrictions in the room? There will be if we have the two little ones share. Right now the nursery is perfect with a full-size crib, dresser and rocking chair. We'd have a problem if we try to squeeze a toddler bed in there.
Favorite travel sleep surface? We used the PNP most often. But we've never flown with it. When we sleep out of town, we request one via the Airbnb or a travel crib if we're staying at a hotel. We had one shipped to Grandma's house across country so we wouldn't have to deal with lugging it around in addition to stroller and carseat.
@Swiftlet, I’m racking my brain to figure out if a double stacked mattress would be safe or not. I can’t think of a reason it would be unsafe as long as once baby is rolling/sitting/standing the crib rails are high enough from the mattress to keep them safe.
