ETA: I’m sorry this is a book but I hope it contains helpful info and not just pregnant ramblings.

Ok. I’ve gone through so many dang diapers with my two kids to find the ones I liked. So here goes.

With DD I swore by papers swaddlers and then continued with pampers brand with her. They didn’t leak as much as other brands I tried and loved them.

I also used used cloth diapers when I was home and had the energy. Overall I wasn’t a huge fan just because of the time consuming nature of them. I had the bum genius one size (they snap down depending on baby size). They leaked overnight so I ended up using disposables at night. I still have them. Didn’t use them with DS but I might try to use them some with this baby just because? (Lets be real I won’t feel like washing them though)

So with DS I automatically got pampers since I loved them so much with DD. Nope. He was a huggies baby. Pampers didn’t work for him. Leaked all the time! It’s crazy. I never knew that different babies would do well with different diapers. So now I’m afraid to get too many of anything because who knows what this baby will need. I used the little snugglers for as long as possible because they were just so soft and didn’t leak ever. He’s now in the little movers and I love them as well! I buy them at Costco because it’s the most economical, but am contemplating switching to the subscription on amazon because it’s easy and shopping with two kids will be tough enough without lugging around enormous boxes. Also hoping he will toilet train soon, but he has kidney problems so our Urologist doesn’t want us to push it.
  • Loading the player...
  • I did pampers swaddles when DD was a newborn, then switched to Kirkland (Costco) and never looked back. Every time I tried biodegradable diapers she got terrible rashes.

In terms of diaper creams, we usually use a combination of butt paste, aquaphor, and Desitin, but for really bad yeast rashes the key is actually lotrimin! It blew my mind, but works like a charm.
  • I mostly cloth diapered DD. We used Bum genius All-in-ones. I’m lazy af though so we got a diaper service (got a good deal where the first 6 months of service came free with the purchase of diapers). I used pampers swaddlers at night after the first two or three months when I wasn’t changing her in the middle of the night anymore. I have used a variety of disposables as backup to my cloth and they’ve all been fine.

i liked cloth, but even with the service it got annoying. Daycare made us take home the dirty diapers every single day. We also had to provide our own diaper pail and take it home to sanitize every weekend. Of course I understand why, but it was a ton of extra stuff to carry back and forth every day when you already have baby, car seat, bottles, etc. Daycare also would bag the poop diapers in plastic bags so we would have to dig through all the diapers and take the plastic bags off before sending them to the cleaning service. Gross. I think this time we will use cloth during my maternity leave and on weekends, and use disposables at daycare.

We switched to pull-ups at 18 months although she wasn’t fully potty-trained until after age 3.

Pampers are the only brand that really fit DS right. We tried all the brands trying to save money and every time kept coming back to Pampers bc they had the least amount of leaks and blowouts. I think every baby is different so I recommend trying a few. We also got stuck with Pampers in the end bc DS is really big >99.9 percentile big for height and weight so he needed size 7 and only Pampers Cruisers makes those. (Some off brands say they have a 7 but they fit DS like a 6 and leaked big time). We now at 2.5 use 4-5T pull ups for daytime and S/M goodnites at night.

Diaper cream I can’t recommend Pinxav enough. It’s pink which stains and it doesn’t smell great but while other diaper creams (and we tried a bunch) took a week or more of use at every change to clear up a bad rash this stuff cleared it up after use just at night for a couple nights! We now use it just at night every day and see no more rashes unless we forget a night or DS has one of his silent poops that he doesn’t tell us about and I don’t notice it bc I’m busy with dishes. Even when it happens though it’s cleared up by the next day.

We have the Ubbi diaper pail and I love it. It works pretty well for scent and you don’t need special bags. Our biggest issue with it is DS has learned how to unlock it now and thinks it’s funny to open it and stink up his room 🤦🏻‍♀️

Edited bc the bump turned my already long paragraphs into a giant one

  • I have been waiting for this thread!!  I'm a crazy cloth diaper lady and love talking about them, but will try to keep it under control here.   :)  We chose cloth mostly for environmental reasons, but also to save money.  I think they are cuter and better for baby's bottom too.

What are your favorite brands/types/sizes to use?  We use mostly Bum Genius and Thirsties pocket diapers and Grovia covers with prefolds.  I've got other brands in my stash that I'd be happy to speak to if anyone cares...lol.  We used Pampers Swaddlers with DD when she was a newborn, but will use cloth from birth with this one.

Is there a rash cream/wipe/etc. you swear by?  We use the green bottle of Boudreaux's Butt Paste because it's CD safe.  We rarely need it though.  We also use cloth wipes, but do Water Wipes when we're out of the house.

Any other diapering accessories can you not live without (e.g. diaper pail)? Wet bags, Spray Pal and diaper sprayer if you're doing your own laundry.

If you have previously used cloth diapers, what brands / tips and tricks do you recommend?  I have a lot to say about this!  I'd be happy to chat with anyone about specifics.  My #1 resource is Fluff Love University online and the "Original Cloth Diaper Mamas" FB group.  There is a wealth of knowledge there!

& if yes to the above, did you use a cleaning service or DIY/which would you recommend?  See above.  Fluff Love University has so much info about laundering diapers.
  • So glad to see so many cloth diapering mommas!

we do bum genius all in ones and free times (I load the pocket with hemp and charcoal bamboo...although I was told charcoal bamboo is glorified microfiber...hemp def is good). I use the pockets for naps.

i like burts bees for diaper cream when he has a bad rash. We use coconut oil when he doesn’t have rash. You need to find cloth safe creams if you CD.

agree with @keeksie84 that fluff university is the best. They saved my cloth diapering journey when I had an ammonia smell and needed to strip and then change my wash routine.

I tried everything for overnight but DS is a heavy wetter, so we use disposable at night. he actually still pees through an overnight disposable diaper WITH a booster pad most nights. Sigh.

it’s extra work, but it is one of my proudest achievements as a mom (that and breastfeeding).

  • Has anyone tried the Pampers Pure diapers? DD was out of diapers when they came out.

We used Pampers Senitive when DD was little and found that they were the best fit and quality. She has really sensitive skin. Once she got bigger we started using Pampers overnight for nighttime and were able to switch to Target brand diapers which are great and so much cheaper!

I like Honest company because they are gentle and adorable, but DH hates that there’s no indicator line 🙄

For diaper rash my sworn method is water wipes and triple paste! You’ll see improvements overnight.

  • Pampers for both girls. Pampers Sensitive wipes. Aquaphor regularly. Desitin for bad rashes.

And unless you have a really big baby you will need Size Newborn diapers for at least a while. With my first I believed the people who said you don’t need newborn size, and I had to send my mother in law to Target the day we came home.
  • We’ve used a combo of bum genius all-in-ones and disposables. We accidentally switched to exclusively disposable over last winter when my kid got a bad, recurring yeast rash and we also couldn’t line dry because of the weather. We just never started using them again!

I think once you get in a groove, laundering the cloth diapers is pretty straightforward. There’s no local diaper service here, so I never tried that. I might do cloth again with DD2, esp if I can get DD1 potty trained first.

FYI: bum genius AIOs didn’t fit my kid til she was like three months old. That said, the first month or two is complicated enough, and it’s not a terrible idea to start off with disposables cos you’re changing diapers a gazillion times a day.

Re: disposables, we’ve tried pampers pure, honest, eco by naty, and dyper. Currently using dyper cos they are the most affordable, sustainably made (and supposedly compostable!) situation we’ve found. They’re soft on the bun, no frills, and we haven’t experienced any leaks (that said, have only been using them since 13 months, so it’s a less leaky time in general). I’m reassured that they practically start breaking down by the time you’re changing it (never in a messy way), so I figure they’ll spend less time languishing in the landfill.

We just use a regular step trash can. We actually started putting all diapers in the kitchen trash, since it’s easier to stay on top of emptying just one. I put the poop in the toilet now that it’s firm (you’re actually supposed to!) and that decreases smell.

Products I like: motherlove diaper balm (and their nipple balm!), babo diaper cream (for when there’s actually a rash and you need a zinc barrier), generic lotrimin for yeast. We only use water wipes.

Are you thinking Cloth or Disposable?
Why? Absolutely disposable. Because time and sanity.

What are your favorite brands/types/sizes to use? I feel like it's a crap-shoot when they're tiny. DS leaked ALL. THE. TIME. for the first two months no matter what size or brand we used. We tried EVERYTHING. I'm pretty sure it was because he had skinny little legs so we just had to wait for him to plump up  :D  I've been using Huggies ever since he was 2 months old for a few reasons:
-The waistband tape is nice and wide, which I feel must be more comfortable because it doesn't cut into his belly or sides like thin tape does.
-they don't have the artificial "baby scent" like Pampers does.
-the butt/crotch part is a little wider than other brands which gives more coverage and seems to be more comfortable.
Is there a rash cream/wipe/etc. you swear by? Not really. I have Honest Company, Bourdreaux's Butt Paste, Desitin, & A&D in my arsenal. I'm lucky that DS wasn't a super rashy baby, so I can't really speak to what I like best. Although his daycare providers swears by Bourdreaux's.
Any other diapering accessories can you not live without (e.g. diaper pail)? We have a Diaper Genie for poop diapers, and we throw pee diapers in a regular trash can, otherwise the diaper pail fills up WAY too fast which is expensive. The Diaper Genie works like a charm, so no complaints there (although we got an old-style one since the reviews on the new ones are horrible). Also, hot tip: if you're exclusively breast feeding, baby poop doesn't really smell, so you don't need to waste expensive diaper pail liners until they start taking solids or formula.

  • Are you thinking Cloth or Disposable?  We use disposable.  I can barely keep up with our normal laundry, let alone having to do diaper laundry.  I will say that cloth diapers are super cute though - so many fun prints and colors.

What are your favorite brands/types/sizes to use?  We used Pampers for both DS1 and DS2 and they worked fine for us.  Pampers Swaddlers only at first, then eventually adding in Pampers Baby Dry as a night diaper since that seems to hold overnight pee better for us.  DS1 moved on to Pull Ups and now just uses those at night since he is potty trained during the day.

Is there a rash cream/wipe/etc. you swear by? We use Aquaphor on the bum with every diaper change.  Doing this, we've rarely had any rash issues, especially after a few months old.  We will also sometimes use Aquaphor on DS1 at night as needed.  We use Pampers Sensitive wipes.

Any other diapering accessories can you not live without (e.g. diaper pail)?  We have an Ubbi diaper pail for both boys.  I like that it uses regular trash bags, and when closed it keeps the poo smell out pretty well.

Are you thinking Cloth or Disposable?
    Why?
I used disposable for my son because we lived in a building with coin op laundry in the basement at the time. I'm very carefully considering cloth this time, as we will be in our own place. I'm looking at diaper service most seriously though... Because $$$ outlay for cloth plus laundry costs seems like it would not be cheaper overall and I don't want to pay loads for something I'm not sure I will manage to continue with. I'm sort of unconvinced on the overall environmental impact of cloth (manufacture, laundering, potentially transportation etc) vs disposable and I think I need to do a lot more research before I decide.

We used pampers swaddlers when he was newborn as they fitted him better, but switched to Huggies once he started moving around on his own - a lot fewer leaks.

I prefer Huggies overall for the lack of scent and also lack of the slight white residue the pampers would sometimes leave on skin.

Since around 26 months, we are just using Goodnites pull-ups for sleep and some naps since he's dry during the day. I like these a lot, except when he poops as they are hard to get off without getting crap everywhere.

Is there a rash cream/wipe/etc. you swear by?
I like Boudreaux's Butt Paste the best, but tbh my son very rarely got diaper rash so I don't have too much experience.

@Madamemerle we use goodnites and if DS poops in them we just rip the sides. The side seems rip really easy and then it’s just like a normal diaper and poop stays contained (unless he is fighting us during the change)!

  • We’re going to cloth diaper this baby too. Already have everything so why not continue? I am making a few changes this time around though. I've started buying a small amount of newborn diapers because my daughter would have fit them for almost 3 months and couldn't fit into our OS properly for the first 2 months and not at all the first month. I'm planning on entirely cloth diapering at least from the day we come home and if we don't have blood group jaundice again and need the bili lights, I will flat out cloth diaper from birth. And I am going to make a few diapers on my own this time. I need to start prepping because I've got elastics to replace and diapers/inserts to make.

What are your favorite brands/types/sizes to use? We used mostly pockets with my daughter, but I really like AIO. Brands I love are: thirsties, bum genius, rumparooz, and Bella Luna (my absolute fave!!). We also used Charlie Bananas and they fit great when my daughter was really small (best one size diapers for fit for a baby in newborn and 0-3 months imo).

Is there a rash cream/wipe/etc. you swear by? CJ's BUTTer and Honest for creams and pampers sensitive wipes (my daughter has eczema).

Any other diapering accessories can you not live without (e.g. diaper pail)? Love our Ubbi pail and kangacare wetbags. Hemp inserts and fleece liners once we started solids.

If you have previously use cloth diapers, what brands / tips and tricks do you recommend? Making sure you have a good wash routine and that your diaper cream is cloth safe. More wetbags than you think you'll need. Be prepared to add lots of absorbency as baby grows.

& if yes to the above, did you use a cleaning service or DIY/which would you recommend? DYI. Cleaning services by us only do flats and covers, which I have zero interest in.
