Toddler and Baby sharing a room

My 2.5 year old will eventually have to share his room with his baby sister. By the time baby is here my son will be a little over 3 and baby girl won't move into his room for at least 6 months. I want to get him use to the idea of sharing his room so it isn't a shock when it happens.
So here I am, asking for any advice or input on a 3 year old sharing "his bedroom" with baby sister. How to handle the transition etc. Thank you :-)

Re: Toddler and Baby sharing a room

  • I would speak to him extensively about how it’s his job as a big brother to not wake the baby. I would also get a sound machine and start using it now if you don’t have one already, to help drown out the baby’s cries in the night. But, I wouldn’t mention any of the drawbacks to sharing, keep it positive and fun.

Thank you!! We are also contemplating building a wall to divide the room. It is large enough where they would both have a decent amount of space and he will still have his room. But Idk how motivated my DH is to actually build the wall.
  • My two kids share a room right now. My DS was about 2.5 and my DD was about 4 months when then started sharing. It actually went really well! Both kids are pretty good sleepers so don’t seem to wake each other up too often. My DS didn’t have anything to say about her moving in there! I second the sound machine just to add a bit of background noise in the room!
  • I love the idea of a sound machine. You could also get one of those dressing screens instead of putting up an entire wall.

  • @craftywitch I’m also a little concerned about DS being annoyed by baby lol. Anytime he thinks a friend is being too loud he won’t hesitate to tell them something 😂 I also babysat a friends 3 month old for a night and DS was not having it when friends baby started crying! So I don’t think he’ll be going in with much patience but he’ll have to learn at some point! But I also plan on having them room share after baby outgrows the bassinet. I’ve seen some cute bunk bed ideas but second guessing them if either or won’t let the other sleep or if DS1 will start throwing toys into the crib at night lol! Really cute concept though!

  • @craftywitch and @chipsnsalsa20 those are both really neat ideas! We have a bunk bed for my oldest two boys. There is also a drawer underneath the main bed that pulls out into a trundle. My third boy will sleep there when he is ready. Bunk beds are great space savers, for sure.
  • @craftywitch that is adorable but my only concern is getting a baby on that crib comfortably. I think I would hit my head on the bunk!
